Anyone who says there’s nothing fun in Zhumadian, I’m telling you, I’m upset with you! I spent three days here with my kid and completely fell in love with this small city in southern Henan. The strange mountains and unique rocks of Chaya Mountain, the ancient-style night scenery of the Royal Post Station, the grandeur of Nanhai Zen Temple, and the super cheap and delicious southern Henan cuisine— all for about 500 RMB per person for a great time. Choosing the right hotel made it even better. This hotel not only has a great location and new facilities but also very thoughtful service. My kid was especially happy staying there. Zhumadian is truly an underrated treasure city for family trips—few people, beautiful scenery, low prices. It’s perfect for a weekend getaway with kids. Chaya Mountain is really perfect for hiking with kids. Known as the bonsai of Central China, the mountain isn’t high and the paths are easy to walk, so kids can complete the whole hike on their own. The entrance ticket is 70 RMB, and children under 1.4 meters are free. I recommend entering from the south gate, taking the sightseeing bus up the mountain for 13 RMB per person, then walking down slowly.
