I went up for a potential World Cup final—left Lagos around 18:00, wound through cork-oak forests and whitewashed Monchique village (stop for a aguardente de medronhoif you like), and arrived at the miradouro bar as the sun dipped gold over the Atlantic. Ordered a imperialand shared a plate of presunto(cured ham) and local almonds with fellow travellers—Germans, Brits, a Dutch couple—while the bartender flipped the TV to the Portuguese world feed. The contrast is unforgettable: beneath you, a thousand square kilometres of twinkling coastal lights; above you, a violet sky; on screen, the biggest match on earth. Bring a light jacket—it's 10–12°C cooler than the beach—and check the bar's summer hours (they often stay open late for sunset/view seekers; confirm they'll show the match). Drive carefully on the descent. I recommend this over any beachfront sports pub because it gives you perspective—literally and figuratively—on why we travel for football. Toast the champions with a view that takes your breath away before the first goal does. That's a final worth remembering. The strong winds in Sagres are definitely not accidental. One reason is that it is situated at the southwesternmost point of the Iberian Peninsula, with almost no inland terrain to block it, allowing the airflow from the Atlantic Ocean to reach the cape unobstructed. Due to the low friction over the sea surface, wind speeds are easily maintained or even increased. Secondly, Sagres and Cape St. Vincent form a prominent cape landform, causing the airflow to be "compressed" as it passes through the narrow cape, similar to wind passing through a mountain pass or between tall buildings, significantly increasing its speed. Thirdly, during the day, the land heats up quickly, lowering air pressure; the ocean warms slowly, maintaining relatively higher pressure; air flows from high to low pressure, creating a persistent sea breeze that appears almost daily. Fourth, the prevailing northerly to northwesterly trade winds in summer blow southward along the Portuguese coast, and Sagres is located right at the end of this "wind corridor."
