Let me say right away that this is my subjective opinion, and I'm not forcing it on anyone, but whether it's worth spending 2-3 hours of your time on a 5-minute boat ride is up to you. We arrived on the island of Kefalonia by cruise ship, took a taxi right at the port, and went to see this cave after reading rave reviews online. It was a smart decision to take a taxi instead of taking a bus with 50 other people, as we significantly reduced both the travel time and the wait time to enter the cave. Upon arrival, we saw a line of over 200 people waiting to enter the cave, and our taxi driver showed incredible ingenuity and took us straight to the ticket office. 😉 Probably because we'd paid for our roundtrip fare and he didn't want to wait two hours while we stood in line. The cave is certainly beautiful, but small. It only takes 4-5 boats, each accommodating 10 people, so it feels cramped, and the tour itself takes 5-7 minutes. That's all. If you've never seen underground lakes, it's certainly worth a visit, but we've seen plenty in all our travels, and even our hometown has its own underground lakes, and frankly, they're much more beautiful. 😁 Anyway, we went straight to the beach and had a wonderful time.

The Ionian Emerald Resort hotel in Sami is lovely. The hotel is stunning, the pools are clean and a perfect temperature for the summer months. The bar and restaurant serve food all day and are reasonably priced and in line with non hotel bars and restaurants. The hotel hosts a modern air conditioned gym with a good range or cardio and weight equipment. The rooms were spacious and met the needs of couples and families. Another nice place to visit. Cost is around €6 per adult. We were there for about 20 minutes. Lovely and cool under ground looking at the formations. There is a very stew set of steps to climb down and up to access the caves which can be slippery. There is a nice cafe and shop on site with plenty of free parking. On the day we visited there were no queues and we walked straight down to the cave after buying our ticket

The Melissani cave lake was definitely worth a visit. The queues are longest between 11:30-2 when they are at their best. We waited about 45 minutes to visit the cave. The trip last around 10 minutes. The little wooden boats hold about 10 people. The guides like to be paid a tip in Euros.

Getting There Sami is easy to get to if you have a hire car or transport from any part of the island. Attractions A traditional but large Greek town with plenty of shops, restaurants and space on the pebble beach. You can hire small speed boats without the need for a boat licence or take an organised trip. Hotels Several hotels and apartments in the area a short walk from the main town centre. Food & Restaurants A good variety of restaurants, cafes and ice cream parlours. There is an option for everyone. Shopping Small independent shops offering a range of different products and items.
