Sano travel guide and discussion

Where should I go in September? Let me tell you that Sano City really has hidden beautiful scenery! 😎 #September Good Places 2025 Recently visited Isoyama Park, which is about 6 kilometers northwest of JR Sano Station, located in Deruhara-cho, Sano, Tochigi Prefecture, this attraction is really low-key and surprising! The most attractive to me is the Izuruhara Benten Pond, it's really healing🌱 ~ This pond is designated as a "natural monument of the prefecture" and is also one of the top 100 famous Japanese waters selected by the Ministry of Environment! The clear water emerges from the seams of ancient limestone, and there are a large group of carp swimming freely in the pool. It feels super harmonious and natural ~🐟 In addition to the beautiful pond, the park also has an observation deck where you can look around, great for taking pictures📸! There is also a very distinctive Bencai Ten Shrine in the area, and the surrounding folk sightseeing facilities are very cultural. It attracts many local and foreign tourists in spring, summer, autumn and winter. I played there all day and never got bored. I really felt the perfect combination of nature and humanity! As a reminder, the address is: Deruhara-cho, Sano-shi, Tochigi-ken, Tochigi-ken, Tochigi-ken, Japan, Japan 〒327-0102. If you travel to Sano, Japan, Isoyama Park must be added to your itinerary! A must-visit photo hotspot😍

[If you go to Tochigi, try this! 🍜🔥] The highlight of Tochigi cuisine is ramen! Among them, the super popular "Sano Ramen" restaurant "Sano Aotake Handmade Ramen Yamato" is a famous restaurant that you definitely can't miss✨ ✅Sano Ramen Yamato's appealing points 1. Aotake Handmade Noodles: Homemade noodles with a soft texture made using aotake. The smooth texture and chewy texture are addictive! 2. Golden soup: A soup made by simmering chicken bones, pork, seafood, and vegetables in a balanced manner, with a special natural soy sauce. Light but deep flavor◎ 3. Awarded as one of the top 100 restaurants for three consecutive years: A talented restaurant that was consecutively selected as one of Tabelog's "Ramen EAST Top 100 Restaurants" from 2017 to 2019🍥 4. Don't miss the famous gyoza! : The skin is chewy and the inside is juicy. It also contains lotus root, so you can enjoy the crunchy texture! 5. Rest assured with numbered tickets and parking: More than 50 parking spaces, and a monitor outside to show waiting times. Great for visitors from far away. ✅Access ・About 10 minutes by car from JR Sano Station ・Good access from the Tohoku Expressway "Sano Fujioka IC"! If you're in Tochigi, be sure to stop by☺️ #TochigiGourmet #SanoRamen #RamenTrip #TabelogTop100Restaurants #DomesticTrip #Tochigi #Tochigi #Gourmet #GourmetTrip

During a drive on the Tohoku Expressway, we stopped at the Sano Service Area (downbound). 🌿 This is a place too good to just stop for a break. The green mountains and wide blue sky are refreshing, and there's a spacious outdoor area and a Starbucks. There's even a dog run, making it a great stop for those traveling with their dogs. The souvenir corner is filled with unique local products, including sweets and goods featuring Tochigi's famous "Kanto/Tochigi Lemon," and merchandise related to Iwashita's New Ginger. You can find everything from Sano ramen and Utsunomiya gyoza to souvenirs from Tokyo. 🛍️ The lemon milk-themed goods, in particular, were a joy to look at. ✨ 📍Sano Service Area (downbound) Tohoku Expressway, Sano City, Tochigi Prefecture Next time you stop here on a drive, be sure to take your time browsing the souvenir corner. I visited "Sano Yakuyoke Daishi" in Sano City, Tochigi Prefecture🚙💨 I remember going there with my family for hatsumode (the first temple visit of the year) when I was a kid😁 It's also a famous temple that everyone knows since its TV commercials air constantly around the New Year holidays‼️ This "Sano Yakuyoke Daishi"‼️ Its official name is "Soshu-ji," and it's a Buddhist temple of the Tendai sect😁 When people talk about the Three Great Daishi Temples of the Kanto Region... It's Sano Yakuyoke Daishi, along with Kawasaki Daishi and Nishiarai Daishi‼️ I heard it started being called one of the Three Great Yakuyoke (evil-warding) Daishi Temples around the mid-1970s😁 Worshipers visit from all over Japan😅 It's a historic temple enshrining Ryogen (Ganzan Jiei Daishi), a high-ranking priest from the Heian period. It's a spiritual power spot known for blessings like warding off evil, personal safety, and making wishes come true. It also has deep ties to the Tokugawa shogunate—when Tokugawa Ieyasu's remains were being relocated from Mt. Kuno, the procession stayed overnight at this temple. There was even a "Toshogu Shrine Pavilion" right next to the main hall on the temple grounds‼️ The main hall and the Toshogu Shrine Pavilion were under construction, but it still had a very peaceful and serene atmosphere❣️ Even though it was a weekday, I felt lucky to hear the chanting of sutras and the beating of taiko drums for the prayer rituals😁 The gardens on the grounds were beautifully kept and absolutely stunning‼️ I'm so glad I made the trip to visit after such a long time🚙💨😃✌

Visited the "Isoyama Benzaiten" in Sano City, Tochigi Prefecture🚙💨 It's located right by the Izuruhara Benten Pond, which is ranked among Japan's 100 Best Spring Waters😁 "Isoyama Benzaiten" is... One of the Sano Seven Lucky Gods (Benzaiten - Deity of love, respect, and wealth)‼️ A historic shrine⛩️ said to have been founded in 948 by Fujiwara no Hidesato😁 The current main hall was apparently rebuilt during the Kamakura period... You can really feel the history here👀‼️ It features the traditional "Kake-zukuri" (stage-style) architecture built entirely without nails😁 After climbing about 180 stone steps, you'll reach the vermilion-lacquered main hall where you get a sweeping view of the Kanto Plain❣️ The bright vermilion main hall is absolutely breathtaking‼️ Climbing those 180 steps is a bit of a workout, but... The moment you reach the top and look out over the Kanto Plain, it feels absolutely incredible😍💓💓 If you're ever in the Sano area, definitely check out the Izuruhara Benten Pond‼️ And I highly recommend paying a visit to "Isoyama Benzaiten" too❣️

I visited Kamo Wakeikazuchi Shrine ⛩️ in Sano City, Tochigi Prefecture 🚙💨 Some time ago... I spotted its torii gate ⛩️ and had been curious about this shrine ever since😁 Today, I finally got to visit😁 This Kamo Wakeikazuchi Shrine‼️ It's affectionately known as "Raiden-sama" by the locals😁 The enshrined deity is "Kamo Wakeikazuchi no Kami"‼️ Since ancient times, it has been worshipped as a god of mountains and agriculture, and revered as a deity who protects against lightning strikes and storms, ensures bountiful harvests, and brings peace to the world😁 On the shrine grounds, there were many sub-shrines, including Santai Shrine, revered for safe childbirth and child-rearing; Yasaka Shrine, for warding off evil; Asama Shrine, for good health; and Kanzawasan Shrine, the guardian deity of the mountain‼️ There also seems to be an Okumiya (inner shrine), but... It’s apparently about 1 km further up the stairs from the main hall😅 Due to time constraints this time, I had to pass on visiting the inner shrine💦 I definitely want to check it out next time😃✌ You have to climb some stairs to get from the parking lot to the main hall, but the breeze along the way felt absolutely amazing❣️ After paying my respects, I felt completely refreshed and my mind felt so much lighter😁

Visited "Karasawayama Shrine ⛩️" in Sano City, Tochigi Prefecture 🚙💨 This shrine sits right at the summit of Mount Karasawa ⛩️‼️ It enshrines Fujiwara no Hidesato, a Heian-period warlord famous for the "Tawara Toda" giant centipede extermination legend. Founded in 1883 (Meiji 16), it's a popular spot loved for its breathtaking panoramic views of the Kanto Plain, stunning nature, and very friendly cats. As I walked along the approach, there were cats everywhere 😁 Sitting at an elevation of 242 meters, the summit offers an absolutely gorgeous view of the Kanto Plain ‼️ It's about a 10-minute walk from the parking lot to the shrine grounds 🚶♀️ Surrounded by deep nature, you can truly feel the earth's energy on your way up to the shrine ❣️ The rustling wind, the buzzing cicadas, the chirping birds ‼️ Everything is so pleasant and incredibly soothing 😁 Plus, running into the adorable cats along the way just warms your heart ❣️ Right now... The trees are lush and green, creating a refreshing scenery, but I bet the views will be incredibly vibrant during the autumn foliage 🍁 season ‼️ I'll definitely be visiting again 🚙💨 when the autumn leaves 🍁 arrive 😃✌ Castle ruins

I visited "Wakkama Shrine" located in Sano City, Tochigi Prefecture🚙💨 "Wakkama Shrine"‼️ Honestly, I couldn't read the shrine's name at first😅 Wakuma Shrine -> I heard it's pronounced Wakkama Shrine💦 This "Wakkama Shrine"‼️ It's a charming little shrine situated right next to the Izuru Benten Pond⛩️ It is said to enshrine the god of water and the guardian deity of children‼️ Since the weather was beautiful, there were plenty of families who came to see the Izuruhara Benten Pond😁 Also, folks from a nearby nursing facility visited the shrine accompanied by their staff‼️ Although it's a truly tiny shrine, the wooden main hall has a profound, solid presence😁 There are many maple trees planted around, so I bet you can enjoy vibrant, colorful trees during the autumn foliage🍁 season‼️ As I headed toward the main hall, a lovely Hanachozu (purification basin)🌸 with colorful floating flowers caught my eye❣️ This beautiful floral basin‼️ I heard it's lovingly maintained by volunteers🌸 I highly recommend paying a visit here when you go to the Izuruhara Benten Pond😁

I paid a visit to "Ryukoin" Temple in Sano City, Tochigi Prefecture 🚙💨 "Ryukoin" is a Soto Zen Buddhist temple ‼️ It's located just a short distance off Route 50 😁 Even though the highway is nearby and traffic is heavy, for some reason, the place is incredibly quiet and peaceful 😃✌ Passing through the main gate, I was absolutely blown away by the powerful Nio (guardian) statues ‼️ Now... About this "Ryukoin" Temple ‼️ Founded in 1494, it is famous for its connection to the "Wooden Standing Statue of Erasmus," a Nationally Designated Important Cultural Property that originally served as the stern decoration on the Dutch ship De Liefde ‼️ The "Wooden Standing Statue of Erasmus" is... The stern figurehead of the Dutch ship De Liefde, which washed ashore in Japan in 1600 ‼️ Modeled after the humanist scholar Erasmus, this wooden statue was enshrined for many years as the deity "Kateki Sonja" and is now designated as a National Important Cultural Property. It received this designation in 1950 and is currently entrusted to the Tokyo National Museum. It's a temple that mysteriously brings peace to your mind ‼️ I'd love to visit here again when the trees on the grounds display their gorgeous autumn colors 🍁😃✌

I visited "411 COFFEE LAB," a container cafe in Sano City, Tochigi Prefecture🚙💨 It's a cafe I've been curious about for a while☕😌✨ Since it was my first time visiting a container cafe🔰, I knew I absolutely had to go😁 Today, my wish finally came true‼️ It's located right near "Michi-no-Eki Tanuma"‼️ The cafe faces the road, and is surrounded by an endless countryside landscape‼️ The interior has such a relaxing vibe❣️ They offer both indoor and terrace seating. Even though it was hot outside, the natural breeze blowing in from the fields felt amazing, so I opted for the terrace‼️ Listening to the sound of the wind and the birds chirping felt incredibly refreshing😁 Now, as for what I ordered... I originally wanted coffee, but their shakes were totally calling my name😅 After giving it some thought, I went with the "Strawberry Yogurt🍓" shake😃✌ It had just the right amount of sweetness without being too heavy‼️ Super delicious❣️ It definitely lives up to being a staff recommendation😁 Aside from the rural scenery, having the mountains right in front of you is a great way to unwind in nature😁 I definitely want to come back during the autumn foliage🍁 season😁

I visited Katayama Asama Shrine in Sano City, Tochigi Prefecture. 🛐 This shrine ⛩️ is located right next to Katayama Park in Sano City. 😁 Katayama Asama Shrine is... A historic shrine ⛩️ founded back in 1261! ‼️ During the Tokugawa era, the shrine grounds were developed to serve as a ward against the unlucky "demon gate" direction for the Joshu Tatebayashi Domain (Tatebayashi City, Gunma Prefecture). 😅 After the war, high-quality limestone was discovered on the shrine's grounds. Due to severe dust pollution caused by the mining, the shrine was relocated to its current spot in 1971! ‼️ It is revered by the locals as the guardian deity of the Kuzu area in Sano City. 😁 I was completely amazed when I saw the shrine building! 👀‼️ The bright vermilion structure is decorated with vibrantly colored carvings. ✨ The vermilion is just so dazzling! ✨✨ As you walk past the worship hall, you'll find the main sanctuary, which also features incredible carvings! ‼️ Katayama Asama Shrine is a magnificent shrine ⛩️ with gorgeous vermilion buildings and stunning carvings! ‼️ It's completely 🆗️ to use the Katayama Park parking lot, but it's a short walk to Asama Shrine. 🚶 There is a dedicated parking lot for visitors, but... You'll need to drive up a slightly steep hill from the park's parking area. 💦 If your car 🚙 has low ground clearance, you might scrape the bottom when driving back down. 💦 Please be extra careful if you decide to use the visitor parking lot! 😁

I took a trip to Seiryuzan Kinzoin Temple in Sano City, Tochigi Prefecture🚙💨 Kinzoin Temple belongs to the Chisan branch of the Shingon Buddhist sect‼️ Word has it that it's famous for its gorgeous autumn maple leaves🍁‼️ Knowing it's famous for its autumn foliage🍁, I initially thought, "I came at the wrong time of the year😭," but... The fresh, vibrant green maple leaves🍁 actually left me feeling incredibly refreshed😃✌ While soaking in the lush greenery on my way to the main hall, I spotted a black swallowtail butterfly🦋 resting on an azalea bush. It had been a while since I stopped to take a good look at a butterfly🦋. It made me realize that maybe I finally have some peace of mind right now⁉️ With those thoughts, I continued to the main hall😁 The prime spot for admiring the autumn maples🍁 is lined with tons of Jizo statues on both sides‼️ Once you pass through the gate, you enter the Maple Path‼️ From this point on, there's a ¥500 admission fee😁 Apparently, the fee goes toward the upkeep of the Maple Path💦 I saw the green maples today, and they were stunning in their own right✨ However, I heard that in the fall, around 100 maple trees paint the Jizo path in brilliant autumn colors‼️ I absolutely have to see that for myself‼️ I'll definitely be making another trip here during the autumn leaf🍁 season🚙💨 Just a heads-up, the road gets a bit narrow in some spots on the way to the parking lot💦 Drive safely❗

Visited Asahimori Tenmangu Shrine in Sano City, Tochigi Prefecture‼️ Even though it's right in the middle of the city, it's somehow incredibly peaceful😅 There's a high school right next door, and I could hear the students laughing, which actually added a really nice, comforting vibe😁 Asahimori Tenmangu Shrine... Is dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the god of academics, and is affectionately known as the Tenjin of Sano😁 The approach to the shrine is lined with vermilion lanterns and cobblestones, giving it a wonderfully traditional and elegant atmosphere‼️ There are also about 100 plum trees along the path, so you can enjoy beautiful full-bloom plum blossoms in the right season😁 Taking a slow stroll down the path, I spotted tons of ripe plums fallen on the cobblestones and the ground‼️ The whole walkway was filled with the sweet scent of plums😁 Inside the shrine grounds, there's a huge "Cow🐮" statue💦 It's called the "Nade-ushi" (rubbing cow)... Legend has it that if you rub the statue on the same spot where your own body aches, your ailment will transfer to the cow, blessing you with healing and recovery😅 My knees have been killing me lately‼️ So, I rubbed the cow's knees like crazy😃✌ Next time, I definitely want to visit when the plum blossoms🌸 are blooming🚙💨

Veulettes-sur-Mer is the hidden gem of Normandy for anyone craving coastal cool, epic beach vibes, and a dose of serene moonlight magic 🌊🌙 Top Spots to Visit: 1. Veulettes Beach – Stretch your legs on the longest pebble beach in the Pays de Caux (location: Promenade du Front de Mer, open 24/7). The coastline gets extra dreamy under the moonlight— don’t miss a late stroll! 2. Seaside Promenade – This walk is pure relaxation, especially as dusk settles in. The moonlight really kicks up the charm, so plan your visit for after sunset if you want that vibe. 3. The cliffs – For panoramic ocean views and dramatic scenery, head for the cliffs just west of the beach. Bring comfy shoes for the uneven path! 4. Local cafes – Fuel up in the morning at one of the beachfront cafés or grab an evening crêpe after your moonlit stroll. Travel Tips: My favorite insight: the moonlight here is SO worth catching. Plan your evening walks during clear nights for an atmosphere you’ll never forget. Pro tip: the promenade is safe and well-lit, but bring a flashlight if you go cliffside. Getting around: Veulettes-sur-Mer is compact—walking is the way to go! If you’re driving, free parking along the promenade. Food recs: Try Les Galets (Promenade du Front de Mer) for local seafood and classic Normandy galettes. Need-to-knows: French euro accepted everywhere. Weather changes quick so bring layers (especially after sundown). #NormandyCoast #BeachNightWalks #VeulettesSurMer #MoonlightMagic

I stopped by the Sano Service Area for the first time in a while and was surprised by how much it's changed! I stopped by on the northbound lane (towards Tokyo), but the facility was under construction?!?!?! Currently (February 2026), it's temporarily open. However, I was able to walk to the southbound lane, so I explored for some soft serve ice cream🍦🚶♀️➡️ The renovation of this southbound lane seems to be complete, and it's become a stylish facility.😳✨ In addition to Tochigi souvenirs, they also sell original Sano SA products, items only available on the Tohoku Expressway, and even popular Tokyo sweets. It's a hidden gem for now.🤔 The food court is open 24 hours a day and has a wide variety of tempting dishes, including "Mimi Udon," a local dish from Sano City. It wasn't open that day, but they also had yakisoba noodles with fruit sauce and even fried sweet potatoes.😳‼ ️ Strawberry Prefecture boasts the highest strawberry production in Japan🍓 I bought a milk soft serve and Tochiotome strawberry mix at "PICNIC+Cafe"🍦 The portion was generous and I was very satisfied. After some research, I found out that the northbound lanes will reopen at 10:00 AM on March 17th, complete with the Dramatic Area Sano, and will be renamed "Sano Park SA."🎊 On the southbound lanes, there's also a vending machine selling The Rising Sun Coffee.🤙 🌊☕️🏄♂️ There were also colorful sofas and benches in the grassy area.📷 #ServiceArea #SanoSA #Tochigi #DrivingSpot #DramaticArea #SanoParkSA

I visited 'Izuru Benten Pond' located in Sano City, Tochigi Prefecture. This pond has been selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Famous Waters‼️ The water in the pond is so clear that you can see the koi fish vividly, making it truly transparent, magical, and mysterious✨ The koi swimming gracefully were adorable😁 Since the weather was great, many tourists came to see the clear pond, which was surprising👀‼️ Everyone was moved, saying 'So beautiful~❣️' and taking lots of photos😁 Of course, I was one of them✌ At a teahouse⁉️ near the pond, I bought the local specialty 'Imo Fry' and enjoyed it while gazing at the pond😁 I felt so mystical, as if I were in another world‼️ It truly is a beautiful pond✨ During the autumn foliage🍁 season, it should offer a completely different view‼️ I plan to visit again during the autumn foliage🍁 season😁 After eating the Imo Fry, I visited the neighboring 'Isoyama Benzaiten' shrine🛐 The vermilion-painted building was absolutely stunning and deeply moving‼️ I climbed the stairs and discovered a bell tower‼️ When I rang the bell, its sound resonated beautifully, creating a truly pleasant experience❣️ Climbing further up the stairs, I was able to enjoy a panoramic view of Sano City, which was breathtaking‼️ In the shrine grounds, there were several white snake statues scattered around, which felt a bit mysterious😅 Upon researching, I learned that 'white snakes' are messengers of 'Benzaiten'🐍 This was another interesting thing I learned😁 I will definitely visit again during the autumn foliage🍁 season✌

I visited "Michi-no-Eki Domannaka Tanuma" in Tanuma-cho, Sano City 🚙 The parking lot was so crowded that finding a parking spot was quite a struggle! Finally, I managed to park and set off! What caught my eye was a footbath! I was a little surprised to find a footbath at a roadside station... I wanted to soak my feet, but there were just so many people! Unfortunately, I had to give up on the footbath this time. The direct sales store was lined with vegetables and prepared foods... And there were rows and rows of strawberries, which are in season right now! There were also sweets made with strawberries, making it hard to decide what to buy! There were also some famous local steamed buns! Speaking of Sano, the famous thing is "imo-fry" (fried sweet potato)! There were so many different kinds of sauces alone, I was truly surprised! 👀💦 They were selling not only Sano's local specialties, but also many Tochigi's local products. While browsing around, it was lunchtime! 🍴 I chose the "Sano Luxury Set" ✌ It's a set with Sano ramen 🍜🍥, potato fries, and gyoza 🥟, allowing me to enjoy Sano's gourmet food all at once! 😁 It seemed like many other customers were also eating the "Sano Luxury Set" 😁 It's truly a luxury to be able to enjoy Sano's gourmet food all at once! ❣️ The ramen was light and delicious 😋🍴💕 The potato fries and gyoza 🥟 were also delicious, of course! 😁 For dessert, I had Mont Blanc 🌰 Kasama is famous for Mont Blanc, but it's great to be able to enjoy Kasama's Mont Blanc in Sano! ❣️ I was full after eating the luxury set, but there's always room for Mont Blanc 🌰! 😁 It was absolutely delicious! 😋🍴💕 It seems you can also go strawberry picking next to the roadside station! ❣️ #RoadsideStationDomannakaTanuma #SanoCityTanuma #SanoRamen #PotatoFries #RoadsideStationGourmet #Footbath

Akami Onsen Fishing Park🎣 in Izuruharacho, Sano City‼️ There were lots of rainbow trout swimming in the pond.🐟 Perhaps because the weather was nice and warm, like spring... There were lots of families there, and kids were enjoying rainbow trout fishing.😁 The rainbow trout you caught were cooked and grilled on the spot over charcoal, so you could eat them fresh!‼️ Freshly grilled rainbow trout is the most delicious, isn't it?😁 At the back of the fishing pond was a large pond!‼️ There were loads of giant carp there. When they sensed someone, they would come over and open their big mouths as if asking for food.😅 When we threw in the bones from the rainbow trout we'd finished eating, the carp splashed around and fought over the bones with incredible vigor.😁 It was quite an exciting sight! ️ Since it's a park, you can enjoy some truly beautiful scenery during the autumn foliage season.🍁 Rainbow trout fishing🎣 was a rare experience, so it was fun!❣️ From now on, on nice days, it's great to bring a packed lunch and eat the rainbow trout you caught right there!😁 #AkamiFishingPark #FishingPond #Izuruharacho, Sano City #CharcoalGrill
