Always wanted to experience the volcanoes of Indonesia in person, and finally the opportunity arrived. I decided to go on my own on a scooter rented in Malang. I would only recommend this to people who have experience riding scooters in countries with heavy scooter traffic and on mountain roads. The roads were quite steep at times and often very narrow. Driving inside the caldera can also be quite challenging depending on the weather. I was lucky — the road was dry but still firm after recent rain. If it rains heavily, huge puddles can appear on the roads, and when it is too dry you are riding basically on a sand. I planned to enter Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park through the Tumpang gate in the south. My mistake was not pre-booking tickets — you have to pay for every day you spend in the park. On the official website, international card payments did not work for me, and booking through third-party platforms requires waiting for confirmation. Thankfully, one of the guards helped me pay online, and I gave him cash in return. Driving inside the caldera really gives the feeling of being on another planet. In some places there are huge, almost vertical walls; in others, green rolling hills; and in some areas it looks like a snow-covered grey desert — actually layers of volcanic ash and sulphur deposits. For the night, I stayed in the village of Cemoro Lawang. There are several Bromo viewpoints in the village itself, like the one in the third photo above at sunset. The village is quite small and there is not much to do there. For the next morning, I planned to go to the Penanjakan viewpoint. I had been told that scooters and motorbikes might not be allowed there, so I booked a jeep tour instead. It turned out to be a good decision because the narrow road at night gets packed with jeeps. The second photo is from the viewpoint. It gets very crowded, so you may want to secure your spot early. After sunrise, the driver took me to other Bromo highlights: the foothills of Mount Batok, Mount Bromo itself — which you can climb to look inside the crater — and the so-called Teletubbies Hills, before returning to the village. The next morning, before heading back to Malang, I decided to watch the sunrise again, this time from Seruni Point. You do not need a jeep to get there, it is far less crowded, and there is a trail leading uphill where you can find a quiet spot to watch the sunrise without crowds around you. The first photo was taken from one of those spots. On the way back to Malang, I had really nice weather and was able to fully enjoy the amazing views along the mountain roads.

We set out at eight in the morning and began our hike along the rugged mountain road. This road is not easy to walk on and you need to be especially careful with your steps, but every time you walk a certain distance, you can see different magnificent scenery. As the journey progressed, we kept stopping to admire the changing scenery around us. As we approached the top of the mountain, the sight was even more stunning. The last section of the road was a staircase. Everyone had to climb these 250 steps slowly. Although it was tiring, for the sake of the magnificent scenery before them, everyone ignored the fatigue and moved forward firmly. Finally, when we reached the top of the mountain, we saw an incredibly spectacular sight - the crater and the sulfur smoke that continued to rise. The view of this active volcano is stunning, and the surrounding natural scenery is breathtaking. Looking down from the top of the mountain, the environment in front of me is picturesque. All the hard work disappears in an instant, and only awe of nature remains in my heart. There were no fences around it and it was very dangerous. I only watched for five minutes and then left. We rented dirt bikes to go to Bromo in the Tumpang area of ​​Malang. This route is a meeting point for tourists visiting Bromo via Malang, whether they want to rent a jeep or join a tour. My husband booked the rental bikes after searching on Google and found a reliable dirt bike rental company. We rented three dirt bikes for Rp 225,000 each, including one helmet, and a Rp 50,000 down payment was required.
