The iconic landscape of Yilong Lake is that row of flat-top Crape Myrtle trees. Their unique shape is incredibly pleasing to the eye. Beneath the Crape Myrtle trees are the starting points for two routes: the left route and the right route. Right Route (Figures 1-10) This is a free-to-enter 4A-level wetland park with a 3-kilometer-long wooden boardwalk leading directly to the center of the lake. It's perfect for morning exercises, after-dinner strolls, or watching a sunset. This wooden boardwalk is only suitable for walking, not cycling. For cycling, there's a dedicated cycling path, which is further from the lake. Personally, I feel a leisurely walk is best, as it takes you directly to the center of the lake, allowing you to experience the plateau lake most intimately, and it's also a paradise for birdwatching. Left Route (Figures 12-20) Cycling around the lake is highly recommended. This closed ecological corridor is approximately 37 kilometers long, completely separated from motor vehicles, and has been rated as "China's Most Beautiful Plateau Lake Dedicated Cycling Path," making it very safe. The route is mostly flat, with a total elevation gain of only about 30 meters, making it easy for both beginners and experienced enthusiasts to enjoy. I visited in early April and saw pink Bauhinia flowers and purple-blue Jacaranda already in bloom. If you want to see them in full, spectacular bloom, it will be even more vibrant in another 5-6 days. The Left Route is also called Xiao Ruicheng, offering a rich experience of connecting "lake-forest-field-village." There's a cycling station at the starting point under the Crape Myrtle trees for bike rentals, and along the way, there are supply points and restrooms every 3-5 kilometers. It's recommended to visit in the crisp autumn air of September-November, or to see the spring flowers from February-May. The entire Yilong Lake area takes about half a day to explore. We played from noon until 6 PM and had a great time, and it's free! After leaving Yilong Lake, don't rush to take a taxi. Across the street is Hubin Road (Figure 20), the most representative main road in Shiping County. This road runs alongside Yilong Lake, featuring diamond-patterned bricks and a central tactile paving strip. It's one of the widest and most beautifully landscaped streets in the county. We carried watermelons we bought on the way, which were transported from Jinghong. No matter how much you buy, the seller will cut them into small pieces, put them in a fresh-keeping box, and provide toothpicks. The mountains are covered with layers of lush green tea gardens, shadows of white flower trees sway gracefully, and the sweet aroma of honey intertwines with elegant floral scents in the breeze. As the bluestone paths emerge from the tea gardens, century-old residences scatter, and the gnarled branches of ancient tea trees intertwine—this is the Manxiu Village Ruins. It is the vital gateway of the Mengla section of the Tea Horse Road, the most culturally profound pure Han ancient tea village among Yiwu's "Seven Villages and Eight Settlements," and a cultural sanctuary preserved by white flowers, tribute tea, and the lingering charm of the tea horse trade. The name "Manxiu" stems from a blend of the Dai language and Han customs: "Man" means "village" in Dai, and "Xiu" refers to the white flower tree. This is not just a trip; it is a spiritual pilgrimage traversing 300 years to converse with the tea horse civilization, the tribute tea lineage, and the Han ancient village culture. II. In the ninth year of Qianlong (1744), the imperial court expanded the scale of tribute tea procurement, designating Yiwu as a core tribute tea region, which led to the official establishment of Manxiu Village. Standing out among Yiwu's "Seven Villages and Eight Settlements," it is a living museum for studying the history of Han people planting tea in Yunnan, the tea horse civilization, and tribute tea culture. The Manxiu Section of the Tea Horse Road (National Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit): About 2 kilometers of an intact bluestone ancient road is preserved in and around the village. Approximately 1 meter wide and paved with bluestone, it has weathered 300 years of wind and rain. Polished smooth by horse hooves, with overlapping hoof prints as deep as 2-4 centimeters, it serves as ironclad evidence of century-old caravan traffic. The ancient road connects Yiwu Ancient Town, the core area of Manxiu, and Mahei Village. Along the way, horse hitching stones, drinking troughs, and ruined horse inns are visible, perfectly reconstructing scenes of caravans resting, resupplying, and trading tribute tea. It is the core relic of the "Yiwu Gateway Section" of the Tea Horse Road. Ancient Tea Garden Communities: Manxiu boasts over 1,500 acres of contiguous ancient tea gardens distributed across the gentle slopes and mountains surrounding the village. Most of the ancient tea trees are 200 to 400 years old and belong to the standard Yunnan large-leaf variety. The tea gardens coexist with white flower trees and bamboo groves.
