【Kőszeg / Western Hungary】 〜Just like a fairy tale! A hidden gem where colorful streetscapes meet rich history〜 I took a trip out from Budapest to visit Kőszeg, a historic town nestled near the Austrian border! Make sure to save this post for your future travel plans 🔖✨ Interestingly, this town served as the model for the setting of the famous novel "The Notebook" (Le Grand Cahier) by Agota Kristof. From the 13th-century Jurisics Castle to its perfectly preserved medieval atmosphere, I immediately saw why it’s nicknamed the "Jewel Box of Hungary" 💎 Here are my recommended highlights and a walking route 👇 📍 1. A Main Square straight out of a movie scene As soon as you reach the central square, you're greeted by stunningly colorful buildings and exquisite wrought-iron signs! Each sign reflects the shop's motif, and just looking at them is so exciting 🎨 The square is lined with a church featuring beautiful stained glass, a historic pharmacy, stylish cafes, and chocolate shops. Spending a relaxing moment on a bench here felt truly luxurious 🕊️✨ 📍 2. Heading to Jurisics Castle accompanied by song I walked through the "Sgraffitós-ház" gate from the square toward the castle. Just then, I heard beautiful singing coming from the church, which was so soothing... ☺️ The castle, surrounded by thick stone walls, exudes history and makes you feel as though you've slipped back into the Middle Ages 🏰 📍 3. A breathtaking viewpoint overlooking the town About a 30-minute walk uphill from the square! After a bit of a workout, a stunning panoramic view awaited, offering a full look at Kőszeg’s charming orange-roofed cityscape. A must-see for view lovers! 📍 4. The heartwarming safety of the town While walking, I noticed "honesty stalls" selling vegetables, fruits, and handmade dolls. It's a system where you just put money in a box to buy what you want. This peaceful and warm atmosphere really showed how safe the town is, making me love it even more ☺️ 📍 5. Ending the stroll with fresh bread and coffee ☕️ After all that walking, I headed back to the square to a cafe with an attached bakery. Taking a breather with aromatic bread and a warm cup of coffee was pure bliss 🥐 💡 【Good to Know! Access & Travel Tips】 🚆 How to get there (from Budapest) Take the "IC" express train from Budapest ➔ Transfer at Szombathely to Kőszeg station (approx. 3 hours total). From the station, I took a bus to the center (it's also about a 20-minute walk!). ⏱️ Estimated travel time Since I was planning to head to Sopron afterward, I stayed for a "half-day"! 📍 Lake Gosau, Austria I stumbled upon this lake by chance on my way to Hallstatt with zero expectations, but it was actually even more stunning and better than Hallstatt itself! 👍🏻 I visited by rental car, but I think there are many tours available these days, so I highly recommend a tour if you can't rent a car!!!! The trekking courses are also great, and I'm so bummed I didn't get to try them ㅠㅠ,, You must visit if you go to Austria! Oh, and for those renting a car, you don't have to worry because the parking lot is well-organized. 🍯 Tip. There's only one hotel & restaurant at Lake Gosau—you have to try the sausage and schnitzel! And as the train climbs higher, the views become more and more incredible. At some point, I stopped looking at the train altogether. I was too busy looking out the window. 🏔️ Welcome to Schafberg The journey begins in the beautiful lakeside town of St. Wolfgang. At first, everything feels calm and peaceful. Traditional Austrian houses. Flower-filled balconies. Church towers. The blue waters of Lake Wolfgang stretching into the distance. Then you see the little mountain train waiting at the station. It looks almost like something from another era. And that's when the adventure really begins. 🚂 The Little Train That Climbs the Mountain The Schafberg Railway is not an ordinary train ride. It's a cog railway, designed specifically to climb steep mountain terrain. As the train slowly makes its way uphill, the landscape outside the window changes. The village disappears behind you. Forests become thicker. Meadows begin opening up. And the mountains seem to get closer. The train doesn't rush. And honestly, that's part of the experience. You have time to sit back, look through the window and watch Austria slowly unfold below you. 🌲 The Journey Is Just as Beautiful as the Destination One thing I loved about Schafberg was that the train ride itself never felt like just transportation. Every section of the journey offers a different view. At lower elevations, you see forests and traditional alpine landscapes. Higher up, the scenery becomes more open. The mountains stretch farther into the distance. And suddenly, you start seeing the lakes below. That's when the journey becomes truly spectacular. 🌊 Three Lakes From Above The summit area is famous for its incredible panoramic views. On a clear day, you can see several lakes spread across the surrounding landscape, including Lake Wolfgang, Lake Mondsee and Lake Attersee. It was one of those views where I kept trying to understand how the landscape could possibly look this perfect. Blue lakes. Green forests. Mountain peaks. Tiny villages far below. Take some time to walk around. The summit area offers several viewpoints, and even a short walk can lead to completely different perspectives. One moment you're looking toward the lakes. Turn around and you're facing another mountain range. Walk a little further and suddenly the clouds are drifting below you. This is one of those places where having extra time makes the experience much better. ☁️ When the Clouds Move In Of course, mountain weather can change quickly. One minute you can have a clear panoramic view... and a little later, clouds can roll across the summit. At first, I was disappointed. But then I realized it created a completely different atmosphere. The mountains disappear into the mist. The landscape becomes quiet. And the summit suddenly feels mysterious and almost dreamlike. So even if the weather isn't perfect, don't assume the experience is ruined. Sometimes the clouds make the mountain even more beautiful. 🌿 The Austrian Alps Feel Different Up Here After exploring Salzburg and Hallstatt, Schafberg gave me a completely different perspective on the region. From the streets of Salzburg, the mountains are something you look toward. From Hallstatt, they're part of the village landscape. But from Schafberg, you're looking down at the entire alpine world. Lakes, villages, forests and mountains all become part of one giant panorama. It's a completely different way to experience Austria. 🚂 The Ride Down Is Beautiful Too One of the easiest mistakes would be thinking that the best part is only the journey up. The ride back down offers a completely different perspective. Instead of looking toward the summit, you're now looking toward the lakes and valleys below. The train slowly descends through the landscape. And as you get lower, the villages gradually become larger again. It's almost like watching the scenery reverse itself. 🌅 Try to Choose a Clear Day If your main reason for visiting Schafberg is the panoramic view, weather matters. A clear day can make an enormous difference. When the skies are open, you can see much farther across the lakes and surrounding mountains. Early morning can also be beautiful, especially when the landscape is still quiet and the air is clear. But even on a partly cloudy day, the scenery can still be spectacular. My advice? Check the mountain weather before you go, but don't be discouraged by a few clouds. 🏡 St. Wolfgang Is Worth Exploring Too Don't forget about the town at the bottom of the mountain. St. Wolfgang is beautiful in its own right. The lakeside setting, traditional architecture and relaxed atmosphere make it a lovely place to spend some time before or after the train ride. Walk through the old streets. Have a coffee. Look at the lake. And watch the mountains rising behind the town. The main attraction is the Old Town Hall’s Astronomical Clock, dating back to 1410. Its upper dial tracks the sun, moon, and stars against a blue sky, while the lower calendar dial depicts scenes of medieval life. Every hour, the windows open as the Twelve Apostles rotate to strike the hour, their chimes echoing across the quiet, cobblestone streets. Right by the square is the famous restaurant Terasa U Prince. We ordered some crispy fries and juice for the little one, while we sat on the flower-lined terrace under a parasol. With the Astronomical Clock and Týn Church practically within reach and a gentle breeze blowing, it was the perfect way to enjoy a meal with a view. 💡 Old Town Square Practical Guide: Beat the Crowds: I highly recommend arriving before 8:00 AM to capture panoramic shots of the empty square and the circling pigeons; Old Town Hall Tower: Tickets are 250 Kč. You can take the elevator to the top of the 69-meter tower for a breathtaking 360-degree view; Terasa U Prince: Located on the top floor of Hotel U Prince. The terrace is divided into a dining area and a separate viewing area. I’ve heard so much about Hallstatt—not only its claim to being "the world’s most beautiful town," but also its notoriety for over-tourism. I really didn’t want to spend my Austrian vacation navigating summer crowds, so I spent the night at a campsite nearby. At 6:00 AM, just as the sky was turning pale, I hit the gas and drove straight into a waking Hallstatt. The town is built into the mountainside, and the main road tunnels right through the rock, featuring a small parking area carved out inside the tunnel itself. There are fewer than ten spots available, but luckily it’s mostly empty before 9:00 AM, and you can park for free for two hours. Right next to the lot, a flight of steep stone steps winds down alongside a waterfall, leading you directly into the town. Naturally, my first stop was the famous viewpoint. It’s not an actual platform, just a bend in the road that perfectly frames the town’s panorama against the lake and mountains. It’s surrounded by private homes; one balcony in particular offers a view so unobstructed it must be a constant temptation—I’m sure many have trespassed there. Consequently, alongside the scenery, you’ll find warning signs posted in half a dozen languages. Even before 7:00 AM, about a dozen people had already gathered by the road—all of them overnight guests staying in town. The morning mist still hovered over the water, and even the water birds hadn't stirred yet. The town was so still that every breath felt like being submerged in the damp lake air and the lush greenery of the mountains. The locals, however, were already awake. Someone was out for a morning run; someone else was watering flowers. A bakery truck had just pulled up, and the driver hopped out to deliver a tray of fresh croissants to a cafe. The owner held the door for him, and the two of them got so caught up in conversation that they completely forgot their tasks. For five solid minutes, they stood there—one bracing the heavy wooden door, the other balancing a full tray of bread. I suppose that counts as a morning workout. I think the "beauty" of Hallstatt originally referred to moments like these. The Austrian Lake District is home to hundreds of towns like this, where life is quiet and comfortable. Residents wake up to pristine lakes and verdant peaks, swim in the lake in the morning, and grab a coffee at a friend’s shop. Comparing it to other lakes nearby, Lake Wolfgangsee is larger, but its lakeside towns are too flat and lack that dramatic, layered mountain aesthetic. Lake Mondsee, which I visited the day before, felt a bit too modern. Only Hallstatt preserves its classical charm, with the church occupying the only flat ground by the water and houses spilling down the slopes along cobblestone paths and stone steps. In terms of pure scenery, it truly is in a league of its own. But if you actually had to live here, the "most beautiful" scenery might not be so ideal. The world-famous Hallstatt has largely transformed into a tourist hub, filled with shops selling overpriced coffee and mass-produced souvenirs. During peak season, the parking lots overflow, and the narrow cobblestone streets become impassable. While this certainly brings economic prosperity, one has to wonder: as the cafe owner sets out her tables, does she prefer a bustling afternoon, or that five-minute chat with her friend? It’s hard to say. By the time I prepared to leave, the first tour buses had arrived. The town was suddenly swamped with crowds carrying cameras. A few Asian travelers were huddled at a shop window, picking out souvenirs. Even with the shop lights on, the refrigerator magnets looked quite cheap and poorly made to me. As the sky cleared, the real, lived-in Hallstatt—the one that still carries echoes of the past—seemed to evaporate with the mist. For the rest of the day, it would remain a world-famous tourist attraction, until the cover of night returns.

📍Vienna 🇦🇹 Austria (Votivkirche) "Infinity of Light" Art Installation This massive light sculpture was created by Austrian artist Billi Thanner and concluded its run on August 1, 2026. The first thing this piece reminded me of was the Chinese sci-fi novel *The Three-Body Problem*. It looks just like Trisolarans from another planet communicating with Earthlings XDD (BTW, the *3 Body Problem* series is so good, highly recommend!!) We arrived outside the church at 9:00 PM (actually, we ducked out of the symphony at the Golden Hall before it even finished just to see this installation). It wasn't dark yet, and the grass outside was packed with other tourists like us waiting for nightfall. Summer travel in Central Europe really does lead to some very late nights XD There is another immersive light show inside the church called "Light of Creation." It is a powerful 30-minute light show inspired by the story of Genesis. It looked absolutely spectacular in photos, but since there was an admission fee, we didn't buy extra tickets to see it.

Innsbruck, Austria → Mittenwald, Germany I took the S6 regional train from Innsbruck Hbf toward Mittenwald. The journey itself is part of the experience—the train winds through the Alps with spectacular mountain views along the way.
