Stepping into the laid-back rhythm of the South Pacific, the locals in Fiji love smiling and telling me, "Take it easy buddy, it's Fiji Time here!" Fiji's pure vibe and its almost "sluggish" laziness really made me feel right at home. Here, time isn't something you keep track of—it's something you happily waste in the crystal-clear blue waters and the warmth of the people. Fiji is made up of over 300 islands, like pearls scattered across the South Pacific. This time, I started from the main island of Nadi and went island-hopping to Mana, Castaway, Funky Fish, Malolo, and Musket Cove. The Sandbank was the most dreamy stop of my trip. This sandbar, made of fine white sand, only reveals itself briefly during low tide. Standing in the middle of the ocean with soft white sand beneath your feet, surrounded by clear, emerald waters—that sense of isolated beauty is truly unforgettable. Monuriki Island is the filming location of Tom Hanks' movie Castaway. The island even still has the SOS signal traces from the movie. Beyond the stunning underwater coral reefs, the fine white beaches and crystal-clear waters will make you never want to leave. Sea turtles symbolize good luck in Fiji. As a wanderer, I absolutely love the turtle's "wherever the ocean is, that's home" mentality. Snorkeling around Mana Island and watching the sea turtles paddle gracefully seemed like a reminder that life should be this carefree! I stayed on Mana Island for four nights, tagging along with boatman Joesese to pick up VIPs arriving by seaplane (he joked that only broke people take the boat). I also joined the locals in foraging for sea grapes, catching fish on the beach, and even making rings out of coconut shells. Nadi Street Survival Guide: While the people on the outer islands are pure and adorable, you need to keep your wits about you in the main town of Nadi. My hostel owner jokingly warned me about the many "crocodiles" (overly enthusiastic scammers) on the streets. I was once pulled into a wood carving shop on Nadi's main street to drink Kava. They passionately introduced their culture, only to slap me with an astronomical price tag at the end. If you run into overzealous shopkeepers, remember to politely decline, or you might be pressured into buying a bunch of stuff! When in Fiji, your taste buds need an island-hopping tour too: · Kokoda (Raw Fish in Coconut Milk): Fiji's national dish! Fresh fish is marinated in lime juice and mixed with coconut milk, onions, and chili. The Grand Pacific Hotel is just that :'GRAND'. You can sit by the pool taking in the beautiful scenery across the Suva Bay and have an afternoon tea party on the beautiful balcony while admiring the flowers. Theres a Bula Bar , Function Rooms that can host entire formal occasions and luxurious guest rooms. Holiday Inn hotel is just right outside on the edge of town- close enough to be near all the various shops and malls but also far enough to be away from all the town noise and traffic etc!! it’s the perfect location if you want peace and convenience in Suva. Grand Pacific hotel has an amazing range of cakes and cheesecakes for only $10 a piece!! You can grab a slice from the bakery in the front and walk over to the back and look for a table by the poolside to sit and enjoy your desert with a beautiful view of everything and nice breeze. A bunch of us went fishing along the seawall in Suva, and the cool thing is it’s right in the middle of town but in a nice secluded area where it’s private enough to sit and fish peacefully but also is in a path where just enough people walk by, making it feel safe. It was my first time ever going fishing and I managed to catch my first fish which was so exciting!!! Although it was the only fish I caught in about a whole hour of sitting there, the actual act of fishing was so relaxing and peaceful- good for my mental. I highly recommend fishing at this spot behind Thurston garden because it’s safe, it’s comfortable, has good breeze, and you get to meet a lot of great people who pass by as you fish. This location is also really convenient because it’s close to the shops and to the main road. And as you can see, all you’ll need is a hook, line, bait and any old bottle to get your fishing game on🤩 #fishing #passingtime #relaxing

Location of this place is so awesome! Just like 15 minutes away from Suva itself. Really easy and relatively cheap to reach it with taxi or local cars. Roads are in good condition, but do NOT think you can walk through the paths without getting your shoes muddy and wet. Rains are very often in here. There is a lot of a small waterfalls and beatiful creeks to take pictures and selfies. Mostly bigger waterfalls are crowded with locals and also mostly teenagers. swimming also totally nice and relaxing. please take care of your belongingwhile swim. It might disappear sometimes 😄. Our local friend also told us to hire a guide for walkthrough, so that those teens could't rob us on our way. I am not sure but most of the local were nice and kind. In almost every corner of the South Pacific Resort, the original island style is revealed. Walking into the resort away from the world, several employees wearing traditional costumes slammed the snails above the lagoon and gently hit the wooden drums. Afterwards, several companions held flower garlands and walked through the wooden promenades to meet the tourists from afar, offering refreshing tea. The Fiji Arts Village is a unique attraction. It is not a visitor center in the modern sense, but an open-air museum that recreates the architecture and indigenous customs of ancient Fiji before the 19th century. Location: Located in Pacific Harbour, about 40 km south of Suva, the capital of Fiji. Core features: The main highlight is the all-wood architectural complex. All houses, corridors, and even the fortress are built using traditional wood, leaves, and coconut fiber rope, without a single iron nail, creating a rich, traditional Fijian atmosphere. Thatched huts and colorful houses: The residences and shops in the park are thatched huts built in the ancient tradition from before the 18th century. Although the roofs are made of rustic leaves, the walls and decorations are often colorful. The woven grass curtains and painted wood carvings, in particular, look exceptionally vibrant and photogenic in the sunlight. Ancient street market: This area simulates the scene when the first immigrants arrived during the Victorian era. The shops and stalls along the street have a distinct ancient style, where you can buy various handicrafts, wood carvings, pearl necklaces, and shell products. Fortress: This is the most eye-catching building in the center. It was built according to the defensive fortifications used by ancient Fijians to resist foreign invaders. The wooden fences around the walls are equipped with ancient spears, which is quite spectacular. 🛶 Highlights and tips Canoe cruise: We highly recommend taking a canoe cruise through the canals and lagoons of Pacific Harbour. Viewing the thatched huts and the daily life of the residents from the water feels like traveling back to ancient Fiji before the 18th century. Overlook: There is a hill in front of the center. Climbing it offers a panoramic view of the entire ancient culture center, making it an excellent spot for photos. There is also an open-air restaurant on the hill where you can enjoy a meal while taking in the view. Folk performances: After dark, there are usually cultural performances rich in ethnic color, including traditional song and dance. Sometimes you can even see the magical "fire walking" folk art. Admission: According to the latest information, admission to this attraction is free. No packed itineraries, and no sights you absolutely have to "check off." On this trip to Suva, I wasn't looking for Fiji's most glamorous side. I wanted to see how Fijians live their everyday lives. Taking a City Walk from the Local Market to Albert Park and finally to the Fiji Museum, my goal was simple: to see how a city in a Pacific island nation actually operates on a normal day. 🥭 Suva Municipal Market The market was definitely my favorite stop. Walking in, you don't see souvenir stalls targeting tourists. Instead, you find real locals buying their daily veggies and fruits. With stalls overflowing with tropical fruits, vegetables, and root crops, the market is full of everyday life. For me, exploring a local market is always one of the fastest ways to get a feel for a new place. You get to see exactly what the locals eat, what they buy, and how the city wakes up and runs every day. 🌳 Albert Park I walked all the way from the market to Albert Park. This is a major urban green space in Suva, surrounded by quite a few colonial-era buildings. Sitting in the park and watching locals pass by offers a completely different vibe from the bustling market. My impression of Suva was slowly pieced together in these places where the old and the new intersect. 🏛️ Fiji Museum My final stop was the Fiji Museum. Located right next to Albert Park, the museum isn't huge, but it's incredibly helpful for understanding Fiji. From indigenous culture and traditional lifestyles to colonial history and Fiji's connections with other Pacific islands, you can find traces of it all here. Visiting the museum right after exploring the market made the experience feel much more multi-dimensional. The market showed me the "Fiji of today," while the museum gently filled in the blanks of the "Fiji of the past." During this Suva City Walk, I didn't care about how many sights I crossed off my list. Instead, I found that combining the market, the park, and the museum gave me the perfect mix of perspectives to understand the city. The market shows the lifestyle, the park reveals the city's vibe, and the museum tells its history. If you ever visit Suva, I highly recommend not just treating it as a layover to other islands.
