A wonderful time in Kandy, Sri Lanka😍🥰
This is Kandy, Sri Lanka
Had a lovely stay at a brand new hotel The Trees, walked all around the city and lake, visited the Buddhist Temple of the Tooth, and soaked up time at the rooftop pool. Ended the day making new friends from London at Hideout Lounge and riding in my first Tuk Tuk! Beautiful and well maintained park definitely justified the ticket price. Worth a visit account at least 2 hours, could easily bring in some food (or buy some at the park cafe) and spend a whole day.

The National Museum of Natural History in Colombo was established in 1986. The museum is situated in same premises as Colombo National Museum. It is the only natural heritage museum in Sri Lanka which displays plants and animal specimens endemic to the island country. The museum houses a large collection of specimens such as nammals, birds, reptiles, insects, fish, amphibians, as well as plants and geological Rocks.
One of the main highlights of the display is a 65 feet (about 20 metres) blue whale specimen which washed up on the shore of Ambalangoda in 1894. It was such an eye-opening experience to see the skeleton of the largest mammal on earth up close.

🇱🇰 Stunning Red Mosque in Pettah Market
Completed in 1909, Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque is one of the oldest mosques in Colombo. It is located on Second Cross Street in Pettah District, where you can find one of the the largest and busiest open-air markets in Sri Lanka. It is undeniable that the red mosque painted in distinctive red and white striped is the most beautiful landmark in the area.
The mosque can be easily reached by both bus and tuk-tuk. Visitors regardless of gender and religion can visit the mosque during certain timings. Remember to dress modestly. The mosque is surrounded by wthe always crowded Pettah Market. A walk through the busy streets filled with merchants selling all kinds of goods is quite an experience itself.

🇱🇰 Must Visit UNESCO World Heritage Sites
#freehotelstay
The ancient city of Sigiriya and Dambulla cave temple are two of the eight UNESCO world heritage sites in Sri Lanka that you should not miss if you visit Sri Lanka. The two sites are just 20 km apart so it is possible to visit both attractions within the same day.
Getting There -
The most convenient way to reach Sigiriya is by hiring a private car. The cheapest way is by taking local buses. We took 2 different local buses from Negombo and got off at Dambulla. It was fun albeit slightly inconvenient as we got to experience it the local way. From Dambulla you can either take a public bus or hire a tuk-tuk to Sigiriya.
Attractions -
1) Sigiriya Lion Rock: An ancient fortress built on top of a rock column
2) Dambulla Cave Temple: The largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in the island
3) Minneriya National Park: Within an hour drive from Sigiriya, the park houses hundreds of Asian elephants which thrive on the Minneriya Tank.
Hotels -
We stayed in Hotel Sigiriya 2 km away from the entrance of Sigiriya Lion Rock with amazing views of the Lion Rock from the outdoor pool area.
Food & Restaurants -
There are plenty of roadside restaurants along Sigiriya Road and Hotel Road. Some of them offer a good view of the Sigiriya Lion Rock.

A Beach Lover's Paradise
I recently had the pleasure of spending four days exploring the stunning beaches of Matara and Weligama in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka. I must say, the experience was nothing short of magical.
The atmosphere in this region is truly splendid. The beaches are pristine, with crystal-clear turquoise waters and soft golden sands. Whether you're looking to relax under the shade of palm trees or dive into the refreshing waves, you'll find yourself surrounded by natural beauty that takes your breath away.
One of the highlights of my trip was the incredible food. The local cuisine in Matara and Weligama is simply perfect. From fresh seafood delicacies to mouthwatering curries bursting with flavors, every meal was a delightful culinary adventure.
What truly sets this region apart is the people. The locals are some of the friendliest and most hospitable individuals I have ever encountered. They welcomed me with open arms, always ready to offer a warm smile and lend a helping hand. Their genuine kindness and generosity made my stay even more memorable.
In addition to the stunning beaches, Matara and Weligama offer a range of activities for every type of traveler. Surfing enthusiasts can catch some of the best waves in the area, while history buffs can explore ancient temples and colonial-era architecture. The region is also known for its vibrant wildlife, with opportunities for whale watching and turtle conservation projects.
Overall, my time in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka was an unforgettable experience. The combination of breathtaking beaches, delectable cuisine, and incredibly friendly people created a truly magical atmosphere. I highly recommend visiting Matara and Weligama for anyone seeking a slice of paradise in Sri Lanka.

🇱🇰 Sigiriya lion Rock, the First UNESCO world heritage site in Sri Lanka
#freehotelstay
Type "Sri Lanka" in Google images and I'm sure the first few images you see will be the iconic Sigiriya Lion Rock. Inscribed in 1982 as one of the first UNESCO world heritage sites in Sri Lanka, Sigiriya Lion Rock is an ancient rock fortress built in the fifth century which stands around 200 m high.
The Sigiriya Fortress has an interesting history. It was built by King Kasyapa, the second king of the royal Moriya dynasty of Sri Lanka. He was not the rightful heir and acquired the throne by rebelling against his father. He built the palace right on top of the rock column to avoid potential attacks from his brother Moggallana, the rightful heir to the throne. He was defeated by Moggallana 22 years after ascending to the throne. The fortress was used as a monastery after Kasyapa’s death till it was abandoned in the 14th century. A few hundreds years later, it was discovered by British Army Major Jonathan Forbes in 1831.
Be prepared to have a workout while visiting the Lion Rock as there are around 1200 steps of stairs to climb throughout the visit. The amount of time taken to reach the top depends on your fitness level and also the crowd. We took about 2 hours to explore the site.
A foreign adult ticket costs USD 30 while a foreign child ticket costs USD 15. Tickets can be bought online from the official website or from the ticket office onsite. The site opens from 6.30 am to 5.30 pm every day. It is better to arrive early in the morning or in the late afternoon (last entry at 4 pm) to avoid the scorching sun.

🇱🇰 The Largest cave temple complex in Dambulla, Sri Lanka
#wheretogo
Inscribed in 1991 as one of the UNESCO world heritage sites in Sri Lanka, Rangiri Dambulla Cave Temple is the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in the island country. The temple complex was built into five caves under overhanging rock and has been a sacred pilgrimage site since 22 centuries ago. The Buddhist mural paintings and statues in the caves are sights to behold.
The cave temple is located up on a hill 20 km from Sigiriya. The entrance ticket costs 2000 rupees per person and can only be bought at the ticket counter at the foot of the hill. From there we had to climb many flights of stairs to reach the entrance of the temple. The view of the the surrounding area on the way up was spectacular. Before entering the temple we had to remove our shoes so wearing socks is recommended. Remember to wear modest clothing that covers your knee and shoulder while visiting sacred sites. There are lots of street sellers outside the temple selling sarong. It is also possible to rent a sarong to cover your knees before entering the temple.

🇱🇰 Cool Chilling Place @ Ella 🍹Mandala Cafe and Bar

Ella is one of the popular stops along the scenic train route between Kandy and Badulla in Sri Lanka. Located just a stone's throw away from Ella train station, Mandala Cafe and Bar is the perfect place to chill if you have some time to kill before catching your train. The cafe is open 24/7. It is quiet during the day and gets livelier as night falls.
We chilled for some time at the cafe while waiting for the rain to stop. The cafe serves a wide selection of drinks as well as local and western food. Decorated with posters of musician Bob Marley, the cafe has a cozy atmosphere with lots of comfortable sofas, bean bags, beds and even swing seats.

🐘 Sighting in Minneriya National Park 🇱🇰
Going on a safari is one of the activities that you should not miss in Sri Lanka. One of the world’s most spectacular wildlife phenomenon that you can find in the island nation is the elephant gathering in Minneriya National Park. Located in the north-central province of Sri Lanka, Minneriya National Park is home to hundreds of Asian elephants which thrive on the Minneriya Tank, a reservoir built around 1700 years ago.
The national park can only be explored by safari jeeps. We hired a jeep from Sigiriya and reached the entrance of national park in an hour. The jeep traveled through a forest before reaching the Minneriya Tank where we spotted herds of elephants and buffaloes by the reservoir. We were also fortunate to sight some other wild animals like foxes and native birds.

A Must Do Hike in Ella, Little Adam's Peak
🇱🇰
Named after the sacred mountain Adam's Peak, the 1141-metre Little Adam’s Peak is a pyramidal-shaped hill located in the tea country hill city, Ella, Sri Lanka. It is the most popular hiking spot in Ella due to its relatively easy climb and spectacular 360 degree views of the surrounding mountains from the peak.
The trailhead starts next to Ravana Pool Club located about 4 km to the south-east of Ella town centre. It can be easily reached by hiring a tuk-tuk. Our family took about 30 minutes to reach the peak. It is better to set out early in the morning or in the evening to avoid the scorching sun. We spent some time at the peak taking pictures while admiring the beauty of Ella.

The Most Scenic Train Journey in Sri Lanka
🇱🇰
Sri Lanka has a railway network with a total length of 1508 km. The route from Kandy to Badulla via Ella spanning 183 km is often regarded as the most scenic train journey in Sri Lanka. The 7.5-hour journey meanders through cool misty mountains and vast tea plantations dotted with brightly dressed tea pickers.
Reserved seat tickets in first class, second class and third class carriages can be booked online in advance. Most passengers in these carriages are tourists. Most locals opt for unreserved seat tickets which are much cheaper. We booked second class and third class carriages on two separate journeys and the carriages were clean and comfortable, but the third class carriage was slightly more cramped. Many tourists prefer to sit or stand in one of the open train doorways, with their feet dangling above the track. Most tourists alight at either Nanu Oya (nearest station to Nuwara Eliya) or Ella.

The Grand view of the Grand Hotel 😍
Grand Hotel Nuwara Eliya is an exquisite gem nestled amidst the lush greenery of Sri Lanka’s picturesque tea country. From the moment you step foot into its elegant colonial-style lobby, you are transported to a bygone era of sophistication and luxury.
One of the highlights of the Grand Hotel is undoubtedly its impeccable dining experience. The restaurants serve a delectable array of local and international cuisines, catering to the most discerning palates. The traditional English high tea is a must-try, adding a touch of colonial grandeur to your stay.
The hotel’s well-maintained gardens and meticulously kept grounds offer a tranquil retreat to unwind and immerse oneself in the serene beauty of the region. Additionally, the proximity to local attractions like the Hakgala Botanical Gardens and the Horton Plains National Park make it an ideal base for exploring the area.
While the Grand Hotel Nuwara Eliya is a splendid choice for a luxurious stay, some guests may find the vintage charm a bit dated, and modern amenities could be improved. However, the overall experience, warm hospitality, and timeless elegance make it a top recommendation for those seeking a unique and memorable stay in Nuwara Eliya.#srilanka #nature #colonialarchitecture #travel #garden #nuwaraeliya
🇱🇰 The best High Tea @ The Grand Hotel Nuwara Eliya
The Grand Hotel Nuwara Eliya is one of the historic hotels in Sri Lanka established in 1891. Its predecessor was originally a holiday home built in 1828 by Sir Edward Barn, the fifth governor of Ceylon. The hotel was since visited by many notable people including Queen Elizabeth.
There are 10 restaurants in the Grand Hotel. We had a lovely afternoon tea at the Grand Tea Lounge facing the beautiful patio in front of the hotel. The tea lounge serves the best Ceylon teas, together with a delightful array of cakes, scones and savories. Diners can order high tea sets and also ala carte western cuisines. The prices of the high tea sets are a bit steep (minimum 5000 Lkr for a set) but it's definitely worthwhile paying for the ambience and the quality of food.

Seema Malakaya, Serene Temple on floating platforms
🇱🇰
Originally constructed in the late 19th century on Beira Lake, Seema Malakaya is a part of the historic Gangaramaya Temple which is situated 200 m to its east. In 1976, the temple was redesigned and reconstructed as the original structure started to sink in the lake.
Since then, the temple sits on three floating platforms which are connected to each other and to the mainland by floating bridges. There are numerous seated Buddha statues displaying different mudras (hand gestures) on all three platforms. The central platform houses wooden paneled temple for meditation. The view of the surrounding Colombo skyline from the central platform is beautiful. A small entrance fee to the temple applies to foreigners.

🇱🇰 Kite Flying 🪁 in Galle Face Green, Colombo
Galle Face Green is a 500 m promenade in the heart of Colombo, between Galle Road and the Indian Ocean. It was initially laid out in 1859 by Sir Henry Ward, Governor of British Ceylon. The stretch of land was used for horse racing and golf in the 19th century. Being the largest open space in Colombo, this is a popular destination for locals and tourists to spend their leisure time while enjoying the sea breeze from the Indian Ocean.
We spent a leisure afternoon there after visiting One Galle Face Mall which is just opposite to the park. There were a lot of food vendors selling cooked crabs and prawns along the promenade. Clean public washrooms are available too. The kids had a fun time flying a kite and blowing bubbles. The view of the Sri Lankan flag flying high in the background is spectacular. We also got the opportunity to witness flag lowering ceremony at 6 pm.

Boat Paddling on beautiful Lake Gregory 🇱🇰
Lake Gregory is a reservoir in heart of the tea country hill city, Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka. It was constructed during the period of British Governor Sir William Gregory in 1873 in order to make more land available for the expansion of the town.
We spent a leisure evening in Gregory Park located west of Lake Gregory. A small entrance fee to Gregory Park applies to foreigners. Other than taking a stroll or having a picnic in the park, you can also hire a speedboat or paddle boat to go out on the lake. You can even ride a horse in the park! There are several food stalls in the park selling local delicacies. We had a fun time exploring the lake by hiring swan-shaped pedal boats. My children also got to ride on a pony.
