🇱🇰 Must Visit UNESCO World Heritage Sites
#freehotelstay
The ancient city of Sigiriya and Dambulla cave temple are two of the eight UNESCO world heritage sites in Sri Lanka that you should not miss if you visit Sri Lanka. The two sites are just 20 km apart so it is possible to visit both attractions within the same day.
Getting There -
The most convenient way to reach Sigiriya is by hiring a private car. The cheapest way is by taking local buses. We took 2 different local buses from Negombo and got off at Dambulla. It was fun albeit slightly inconvenient as we got to experience it the local way. From Dambulla you can either take a public bus or hire a tuk-tuk to Sigiriya.
Attractions -
1) Sigiriya Lion Rock: An ancient fortress built on top of a rock column
2) Dambulla Cave Temple: The largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in the island
3) Minneriya National Park: Within an hour drive from Sigiriya, the park houses hundreds of Asian elephants which thrive on the Minneriya Tank.
Hotels -
We stayed in Hotel Sigiriya 2 km away from the entrance of Sigiriya Lion Rock with amazing views of the Lion Rock from the outdoor pool area.
Food & Restaurants -
There are plenty of roadside restaurants along Sigiriya Road and Hotel Road. Some of them offer a good view of the Sigiriya Lion Rock.

🇱🇰 Sigiriya lion Rock, the First UNESCO world heritage site in Sri Lanka
#freehotelstay
Type "Sri Lanka" in Google images and I'm sure the first few images you see will be the iconic Sigiriya Lion Rock. Inscribed in 1982 as one of the first UNESCO world heritage sites in Sri Lanka, Sigiriya Lion Rock is an ancient rock fortress built in the fifth century which stands around 200 m high.
The Sigiriya Fortress has an interesting history. It was built by King Kasyapa, the second king of the royal Moriya dynasty of Sri Lanka. He was not the rightful heir and acquired the throne by rebelling against his father. He built the palace right on top of the rock column to avoid potential attacks from his brother Moggallana, the rightful heir to the throne. He was defeated by Moggallana 22 years after ascending to the throne. The fortress was used as a monastery after Kasyapa’s death till it was abandoned in the 14th century. A few hundreds years later, it was discovered by British Army Major Jonathan Forbes in 1831.
Be prepared to have a workout while visiting the Lion Rock as there are around 1200 steps of stairs to climb throughout the visit. The amount of time taken to reach the top depends on your fitness level and also the crowd. We took about 2 hours to explore the site.
A foreign adult ticket costs USD 30 while a foreign child ticket costs USD 15. Tickets can be bought online from the official website or from the ticket office onsite. The site opens from 6.30 am to 5.30 pm every day. It is better to arrive early in the morning or in the late afternoon (last entry at 4 pm) to avoid the scorching sun.

🇱🇰 The Largest cave temple complex in Dambulla, Sri Lanka
#wheretogo
Inscribed in 1991 as one of the UNESCO world heritage sites in Sri Lanka, Rangiri Dambulla Cave Temple is the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in the island country. The temple complex was built into five caves under overhanging rock and has been a sacred pilgrimage site since 22 centuries ago. The Buddhist mural paintings and statues in the caves are sights to behold.
The cave temple is located up on a hill 20 km from Sigiriya. The entrance ticket costs 2000 rupees per person and can only be bought at the ticket counter at the foot of the hill. From there we had to climb many flights of stairs to reach the entrance of the temple. The view of the the surrounding area on the way up was spectacular. Before entering the temple we had to remove our shoes so wearing socks is recommended. Remember to wear modest clothing that covers your knee and shoulder while visiting sacred sites. There are lots of street sellers outside the temple selling sarong. It is also possible to rent a sarong to cover your knees before entering the temple.

Hotel Sigiriya with beautiful views of the Lion Rock
We had a wonderful stay in Hotel Sigiriya during our visit to the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, the most iconic landmark in Sri Lanka. The hotel is 2 km away from the entrance of Sigiriya Rock, which is also known as the Lion Rock. We were welcomed with amazing views of the Lion Rock the moment we set foot in the hotel. The rock could be seen clearly from the outdoor pool area and we could even see the visitors on the rock using the telescope provided!
Our hotel room was clean and spacious. There were French doors leading to patio with sitting areas. Our stay included buffet dinner served in the open-aired restaurant in the hotel. The hotel was very accommodative to our request to provide takeaway breakfast as we needed to leave before breakfast time to climb the Lion Rock.

Sigiriya Lion Rock Sri Lanka 🇱🇰
According to the ancient Sri Lankan chronicle the Cūḷavaṃsa, this area was a large forest, then after storms and landslides it became a hill and was selected by King Kashyapa (AD 477–495) for his new capital. He built his palace on top of this rock and decorated its sides with colourful frescoes. On a small plateau about halfway up the side of this rock he built a gateway in the form of an enormous lion. The name of this place is derived from this structure; Sīnhāgiri, the Lion Rock (an etymology similar to Sinhapura, the Sanskrit name of Singapore, the Lion City).
The capital and the royal palace were abandoned after the king's death. It was used as a Buddhist monastery until the 14th century.[3] Sigiriya today is a UNESCO listed World Heritage Site. It is one of the best preserved examples of ancient urban planning

sigiriya Rock Lion roxxx me
yeay!! im so close to this huge-mammoth-gigantic rock that i’ve been eyeing since i saw a video clip of Duran Duran. it’s just amazing to witness human imagination harmonizes with the nature (the rock was formed from magma of an extinct volcano & reaches 200m high.
when King Kashyapa transfomed this rock into his palace, fortress, garden & ultimately his administrative capital during his reign (477 – 495 AD), it has becoming a magnificent legacy during his time
i am still amazed when i picture themassive construction of the city on top of the rock. how do these people drag all the building materials to the top? it must be hard time and tiring.

🇱🇰 Restaurant near Sigiriya Lion Rock
We happened to dine in Sigiriya Wew Thawulla Restaurant during our stay in Hotel Sigiriya. It is located a short walk away from our hotel at the junction between Sigiriya Road and Hotel Road. It is also a stone's throw away from Sigiriya bus stand. There are a few roadside restaurants on the same stretch of road which offer similar food. This area also offers amazing views of the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, the most iconic landmark in Sri Lanka.
The restaurant serves eastern, western, Chinese and Sri Lankan food. We ordered fried noodles, koththu roti and juices. The food was delicious in generous portions.
