Hiyoriyama Lighthouse
Vivid view from lighthouse🌊💙
Breathtaking scenery with the blue sea & blue sky. A bit far from Otaru city, but reachable by public bus (take Chuo Bus from Otaru Bus Station). I don’t regret visiting here coz it’s the only Japan’s sea I can see during my trip.

Ice creaming and wandering around Otaru
Otaru (小樽) is a great sightseeing city with a side day trip from Sapporo. It is located nearby Sapporo with only 38 km away by 49 minutes of JR train. The European-influenced harbor front city is full of charm with beautifully preserved canal areas and historical buildings.
In Hokkaido, soft serve ice cream in particular is incredibly popular. They also offer ice cream made with local specialty ingredients of each region. We literally had ice cream in every place we visited in Hokkaido, and the milk ice cream in Otaru is the absolute best. So yummy 🍦😋

Exploring Hokkaido's Floral Wonderland and the Northernmost Point in Japan
In July 2023, my family embarked on an unforgettable journey to Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost island. With my mum, sister, and wife by my side, we discovered that Hokkaido's allure extends far beyond its famed winter landscapes.
Our adventure began in Sapporo, a city known for its culinary delights. We savored the exquisite flavors of miso ramen, a local specialty that left us craving for more. The comfortable weather added to the city's charm as we explored its vibrant streets.
A highlight of our trip was visiting Furano, renowned for its stunning flower parks. We were fortunate to witness the lavenders in full bloom, transforming the landscape into a sea of enchanting purple. At Farm Tomita, Shikisai Hill, and Hinode Park, we immersed ourselves in the breathtaking scenes, capturing the beauty of the colorful blooms. An unforgettable experience awaited us at Hinode Park, where we walked amidst illuminated lavenders, creating a magical spectacle that will forever remain etched in our memories.
Our journey took us to the picturesque town of Biei, where we discovered the mesmerizing Shirogane Blue Pond. The tranquil waters reflected a captivating shade of blue, giving the impression of a perfectly edited photograph. The serenity of the pond's surroundings left us in awe, allowing us to appreciate the wonders of nature.
Driving to Wakkanai, the northernmost point of Japan, was another highlight of our Hokkaido adventure. Although the weather obscured our view of Russia, the joyous moments spent together as a family were immeasurable. The scenic routes and vast landscapes added to the memorable experience, creating a sense of togetherness and appreciation for the beauty that surrounded us.
As we made our way back to Sapporo, we passed through Hokuryu Sunflower Village. Despite the sunflowers not being in full bloom, their vibrant presence still amazed us, adding a touch of brightness to the landscape.
Our Hokkaido adventure reminded us that the island is not limited to its winter charms. From the delightful cuisine of Sapporo to the captivating lavender fields of Furano, the ethereal beauty of the Shirogane Blue Pond, and the joyous family moments during our journey to Wakkanai, each experience left an indelible mark on our hearts. Hokkaido revealed its true essence, captivating us with its natural splendor and creating cherished memories that will forever hold a special place in our hearts.

CTS Airport
We flew in and out of Chitose Airport when visiting Hokkaido and Sapporo. It is a small airport but packed with plenty of fun stuff. There are souvenir shops selling Hokkaido treats, clothing stores such as Uniqlo, and Pokemon-themed shops. My favorite was Smile Road, which included a Royce’s Chocolate World - there was an exhibit on the history of chocolate, and even a factory where you could watch workers behind the glass making chocolate and see the different processes involved.

Quiet Retreat in the Japanese Countryside
We stayed five nights in the Neganuma area outside Sapporo. The Japanese countryside is very quiet as there are not many people, but we enjoyed the fresh air and rural scenery. There were plenty of farmer’s markets selling fresh produce and handmade goods. We also sampled food from various food trucks and cafes. There were several cafes selling artisan pizzas and fresh Hokkaido ice cream, which was delicious.

We stayed five nights at the Fairfield by Marriott Hokkaido Neganuma. It was fairly close to Chitose Airport. The hotel is very quiet and very clean.
