In August, I took my child to explore 8 cool and refreshing spots that were less crowded and more educational.
Everyone says taking kids out during summer vacation is a waste of money and a nightmare, but I think it's just a matter of choosing the wrong places. True learning isn't about squeezing into crowded tourist hotspots, but about going to places that will make your child's eyes light up and their mind fill with endless "whys." These 8 places are ones I've personally tested with my kids or researched extensively, perfect for visiting in August and a cure for summer boredom.
1️⃣ Songyuan|Jilin
Chagan Lake isn't just for winter; it has a completely different face in August.
📍 At five or six in the morning, before the mist has dissipated, fishermen are already hauling in their nets from the previous night—a tranquil scene in stark contrast to the bustling ice fishing of winter. Don't rush to take the big boats with your kids; first, walk along the lakeside boardwalk for half an hour. You'll see water birds skimming the surface, and if you're lucky, you might even spot small crabs crawling sideways on the mudflats. Jinchan Island is located in the middle of the lake, a ten-minute speedboat ride away. The island has a shallow beach where the water only reaches a child's calves, perfect for young children to wade and play.
⚠️ The sun is strongest around 2-3 pm, so sunscreen must be applied thickly. There's no shade along the lake, so sunburn is no joke. We had lunch at a nearby fisherman's restaurant, enjoying freshly caught bighead carp stewed with vermicelli. The kids ate two bowls of rice soaked in the fish soup. On the way back to the city in the evening, we saw vast fields of sunflowers, more spectacular than any botanical garden.
🚄 It takes about 40 minutes by taxi from Songyuan Station to Chagan Lake Scenic Area. Hiring a car is recommended for easy stops to enjoy the scenery.
2️⃣ Qingyuan|Guangdong
Lianzhou Underground River is the kind of place where kids immediately scream as soon as they enter. The entrance is like a giant mouth; as you go inside, the temperature drops dramatically to around 20 degrees Celsius, instantly leaving the 38-degree heat outside behind – a natural air-conditioned room. 🚣 Take a boat ride on the underground river, with dense stalactites overhead, some resembling upside-down lotus flowers, others like giant icicles. The boatman will point them out one by one with a flashlight. Elementary school children are particularly fascinated by geology, constantly asking "How did these rocks form?"—more effective than memorizing from a textbook ten times.
⚠️ The lighting inside the cave is dim, and the steps are slippery. Handle young children carefully and wear non-slip shoes. The entire tour takes about two hours. Afterwards, have lunch at a farmhouse restaurant near the scenic area entrance. 🫖 Lianzhou cabbage is a local specialty, sweet and crisp, which children love. If you still have energy in the afternoon, you can visit the nearby Dadongshan Waterfall. In August, the water volume is high, and the splashing water at the base of the waterfall is refreshing.
3️⃣ Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture|Gansu
August in Gannan is the season when the grasslands are at their most lush and vibrant.
📍 In the early morning, the stone mountains of Zhagana are shrouded in a sea of clouds. Standing on the viewing platform, children will understand for the first time what "layered mountains" truly means. The altitude here is relatively high, so parents should take their children slowly and avoid running or jumping. Langmusi is more like a quiet town, with the Bailong River flowing through it, bordering Gansu and Sichuan provinces on one side. Children are thrilled to be straddling two provinces. In the afternoon, visit Gahai Lake. The meadows along the lake are covered with wildflowers, and flocks of waterbirds roam freely. A gentle breeze creates waves of grass. The Yeliguan Tourist Area is suitable for families with good stamina. The red sandstone cliffs of the Red Cliff Valley are bathed in a warm orange glow at dusk, casting long shadows perfect for photos.
⚠️ The temperature difference between day and night in Gannan is significant. Even in August, bring a fleece jacket, as the mountain breeze can get chilly after sunset.
🍜 The Tibetan buns and yak yogurt in town might not be to children's liking, but trying them is a novel experience. It's recommended to hire a car or drive yourself, as the attractions are far apart and public transportation is inconvenient.
4️⃣ Guangyuan|Sichuan
Jianmen Pass is the kind of place that gives children a direct experience of the saying "One man can hold off ten thousand."
📍 Enter from the North Gate. First, take a cable car to the mountainside, then hike up the "Bird Path." The plank road on the cliff is so narrow that only one person can pass sideways, with a deep abyss below. Children are both nervous and excited, clinging tightly to the chains. Middle school students and above will find it particularly moving, as the history and geography lessons suddenly become a real-life scene.
⚠️ The Bird Path only goes up, not down. Families with average physical fitness can opt for the "Ape Path," which is safer, even though it costs a few dozen yuan more. The entire hike takes about three hours. After descending, head to Jianmen Pass Town for a tofu feast. A table full of over ten dishes is entirely made of tofu, which children will find amazing—they're all tofu, yet the flavors are completely different. 🍚 I recommend the "Pregnant Tofu" and "Bengshan Tofu," each with its own unique texture.
🚄 There are direct buses from Guangyuan Station to Jianmenguan, about an hour's journey. It's advisable to arrive at the scenic area before 8 AM to avoid peak tour times, otherwise you'll have to queue at the Bird Trail.
5️⃣ Sanming|Fujian
Taining Ancient City and Dajin Lake can be visited together in a day, a perfect pace. Start the morning by exploring the ancient city. 📍 The Ming Dynasty architectural complex of Shangshu Mansion is exceptionally well-preserved, with its blue bricks, black tiles, and carved wooden windows. Wandering through the narrow alleys with children feels like stepping into a period drama set. The ancient city isn't large; you can explore it in two hours. There's an old teahouse around the corner with bamboo chairs and wooden tables; a cup of local rock tea costs only ten yuan—perfect for a rest. In the afternoon, take a boat trip on Dajin Lake. The lake water is emerald green, reflecting the red cliffs of the Danxia landforms on both banks. Children can lie on the side of the boat watching the splashes, enjoying a quiet moment for quite some time.
⏰ The best lighting is on boats departing after 4 PM, when the lake is bathed in golden sunlight – no filters needed for photos.
⚠️ It can be windy on the boat, so bring a light jacket for your child. After disembarking, you can visit Ganlu Temple, a temple built into a crevice in the rock face, supported by only one pillar. Children will wonder, "How doesn't this building collapse?"
🍜 In the evening, have warm mushroom buns in Taining County. The buns are made with cudweed and filled with dried bamboo shoots and meat; children usually love their soft and chewy texture.
6️⃣ Ganzhou|Jiangxi
August in Ganzhou is rainy but cool. Shicheng is an unassuming little county, perfect for a leisurely stroll with children.
📍 The Danxia landform at Tongtianzhai is quite different from others. Two huge stone pillars stand side-by-side at the summit, resembling a pair of candles. Children will ask, "Who built these?" The mountain isn't high; an hour's climb is sufficient, even for younger children. In the afternoon, we visited Dashe Ancient Village. The lotus ponds were in full bloom, the lotus leaves several times larger than a child's face. The lotus pods were freshly picked and eaten, incredibly sweet. Sanbaishan is the source of the Dongjiang River. We took the children for a walk along the river's source boardwalk; the stream was crystal clear, and we could see small fish swimming among the rocks.
⚠️ The boardwalk is slippery after the rain, so be careful.
🍜 Ganzhou's Hakka cuisine is on the salty and fragrant side. Xingguo Rice Noodle Fish is their signature dish; the fish slices are tender, and the rice noodles soak up the broth perfectly. The children could easily eat a large bowl of rice with it.
🚄 It takes about two hours to get to Shicheng from Ganzhou West Station, but driving is recommended for convenience.
7️⃣ Lhasa|Tibet
August in Lhasa is the rainy season, but the rain comes and goes quickly. Reservations for the Potala Palace must be made a week in advance; tickets are hard to get during peak season, ⚠️ don't expect to buy tickets on-site. Bringing children inside will likely be most impactful for them, with the dense array of prayer wheels and the smell of butter lamps creating an atmosphere unlike any other Han Chinese temple. In the square in front of the Jokhang Temple, there are always people prostrating themselves in prayer; children will watch curiously, whispering, "What are they doing?" This is more effective than any lecture in helping them understand the power of faith. In the afternoon, we'll head to Namtso Lake, a four-hour drive at an altitude of over 4,700 meters. If your child has a headache, use supplemental oxygen immediately; don't push them.
⏰ Namtso Lake is most beautiful at dusk, the water an unreal blue, with the distant Nyainqêntanglha Mountains covered in snow. It's windy, so a windproof jacket is essential.
🍜 Children generally love Lhasa's sweet tea; it's like milk tea but less sweet, perfect with Tibetan noodles for breakfast.
⚠️ August is the rainy season, and the road to Namtso Lake may be prone to landslides. Always check road conditions before you set off.
8️⃣ Jiaxing|Zhejiang
Many people say you only need to visit one of Wuzhen and Xitang, but my answer is: take both with your children. However, the order matters. ✔️ Wuzhen first, then Xitang. Wuzhen's West Gate scenic area is well-managed. The lights reflected in the water at night create a flowing painting. Children walking on the stone paths, watching the rowboats creak by, will find peace. East Gate retains the original inhabitants' daily life. In the early morning, you can see elderly people washing clothes by the river, making children realize, "So people really do live by the water." Xitang has a more vibrant, down-to-earth atmosphere than Wuzhen. 📍 The shops under the covered walkways sell various pastries; the water chestnut cake is best when it's hot.
⚠️ Xitang is crowded at night, so hold your child's hand tightly.
🍜 Between Wuzhen's braised mutton noodles and Xitang's Guan Laotai stinky tofu, children might be more interested in the latter.
🚄 There are direct buses from Jiaxing South Station to Wuzhen, taking about an hour. A taxi ride between the two ancient towns takes about 40 minutes, so you can visit one a day.
None of these eight places are the kind of "check-in, take photos, and leave" tourist attractions. Each one allows children to see, touch, and experience things they can't learn from textbooks. With such a long summer vacation, instead of staying home with your kids, why not pick one and go? Which one do you most want to go? Let's discuss in the comments, and I'll help you decide.
