While most shrines feature dragon-shaped water spouts, this one has a super cool, giant black "Yatagarasu" with its wings spread out, looking like it's about to take flight! Take a closer look and you'll see it actually has three talons, exactly like the legends say. The wildest part? The water flowing out isn't your everyday tap water—it's actually slightly warm "hot spring water" with a faint hint of sulfur! Getting to wash your hands and experience a mini hot spring all at once is a total first for me. I feel like just washing my hands here brings a blessing from the divine bird and some serious good luck. When visiting Hongu Taisha, snapping a pic with this epic "hot spring divine crow" at the chozuya is an absolute must to officially check this spot off your bucket list! Hotel Harvest Nanki-Tanabe Their restaurant, THE DINING "IRODORI", reopened on April 17th! The address is 2901-1 Shinjo-cho, Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture 646-0011. I've dined here before, but since the reopening, the seating area is much more spacious, steps have been removed, and it's now completely accessible. The menu has also been revamped with a huge variety of dishes, and the seafood selection is even better than before! 🤩 They didn't have salt-grilled sweetfish (Ayu) before, but they do now! It was perfectly flaky and delicious. 😋 The dessert selection has grown too, and everything was incredibly tasty! 🥰 It was 6,600 yen per adult! There's a 90-minute time limit, but that was plenty of time. 😊

Tested the essence of the Kumano Kodo trail! This route is definitely worth rushing for~ Itinerary: Hayatama Taisha → Kamikura Shrine → Daimonzaka → Nachi Taisha → Seiganto-ji Temple → Hiryu Taisha → Nachi Waterfall → Kii-Katsuura → Kumano Hongu Taisha After researching the bus options for a long time, I decisively chose a private car, so I had full control over the time! Hiked 4 km from Daimonzaka to Nachi Waterfall, surrounded by towering trees that are super healing. I recommend at least 1.5 hours to stroll slowly. Had lunch at Kii-Katsuura Seafood Market. The taste was good but a bit pricey; one set meal wasn’t enough 😂 After eating, went to the pier for a foot bath! The lonely torii gate in the sea (Shirohebi Benzaiten Shrine) is a must-visit. You can even go into the sea and see many sea cucumbers (PS: after taking photos, they were returned to their original place, with a release video). Finally rushed to Kumano Hongu Taisha. The large torii gate is quite impressive! On the way from the old site to the new site, there’s a small supermarket where the Wagyu beef is excellent value. Bought some to add to the meal at the guesthouse—another satisfying day~ The overall route is smooth without detours, satisfying both natural scenery and cultural heritage. Winter Hiking Experience The bus stopped at Chusha, and the dozens of steps were all covered in ice. I quickly put on my crampons and carefully climbed up to the Chusha platform. I bought an omamori (protective charm) at Chusha, took a short break, and hurriedly set off on the mountain trail towards Okusha. The trail from Chusha to Okusha wasn’t particularly exciting. Seeing the teahouse in front of the Okusha torii gate, I knew the cedar tree path was not far away. After arriving at the Suwamon gate, I entered the most scenic section. Tall cedar trees stood on both sides, making people feel very small among them. The boardwalk section at the entrance of Kumano Kodo gave the same feeling. Japan’s ancient temple paths truly feel timeless at a glance. In winter, heavy snow covers everything, obscuring the mountain outlines, but the spiritual atmosphere is very strong. The giant cedars couldn’t bear the continuous snowfall, and large chunks of snow suddenly fell from above. The force of gravity combined with the cold wind made those hit feel like they were caught in a blizzard. Fortunately, I had taken an umbrella from the hotel, which could be used as a walking stick and to shield against sudden snowfalls. The route’s endpoint was the high-altitude Okusha. The snow here was so deep and thick that the steps were completely invisible; I could only climb along the narrow path made by previous hikers. The crampons I bought for a few dollars on TB came in very handy. Upon reaching the endpoint, the lively music abruptly stopped. After a short rest, I returned the same way. The return trip was faster than the way there. I missed the entrance to the walking trail in front of the teahouse and ended up taking the road back to Chusha in one go.

Luckily, today’s route is "only" 13 kilometers, taking about 6-8 hours to hike. It’s considered one of the more leisurely days on the Kumano Kodo. We transformed into "Little Prince Gen" and "Little Princess Qing," taking beautiful photos 📸 along the way while soaking in the sacred atmosphere of the ancient trail. Tonight, we’ll be staying at the cozy guesthouse 🏡 "Kumano Kodo G Chikatsuyu," which allows check-in at 4 PM—perfect timing! 🚶♂️ Today’s Route: Kii-Tanabe – Hettori (by bus) 08. 30 ⛩️ Visit Kumano Kodo Kan 09. 00 Start hiking → Collect Prince Shrine stamps along the way · Hettori Prince Shrine – The first stop on the trail, marking the ceremonial start of the day’s journey ✨ · Nonaka Prince Shrine – A uniquely named shrine, said to be where pilgrims once stayed overnight, hence its name. · Takahara Kumano Shrine – A tranquil little shrine that protects the trail and its travelers 🙏 · Daimon Prince Shrine – A symbolic "gate" that feels like entering the sacred realm of Kumano. · Tojo Prince Shrine – A small shrine with a rich sense of history, quietly accompanying travelers. · Osakamoto Prince Shrine – A famous rest stop along the trail, perfect for taking a deep breath 🍃 Michi-no-Eki (Lunch): Originally planned to have a bowl of 🍜 udon, but unfortunately, we arrived after the serving hours, leaving a slight regret. · Gyuba-doji – A popular photo spot on the trail 👏! The stone statues of a child leading an ox and horse symbolize that all travelers, regardless of wealth or status, can journey to Kumano. It’s definitely not referring to modern-day corporate "workhorses"! · Chikatsuyu Prince Shrine – Today’s final destination, historically an important lodging spot for nobles and travelers. (Today’s hike: 13 kilometers, collected 8 stamps 📖) 📖 Kumano Kodo Trivia Kumano Kodo is one of Japan’s only "World Heritage Pilgrimage Routes" 🌏. Since the Heian period, emperors and nobles have walked to the Kumano Sanzan (Kumano Hongu, Kumano Hayatama, and Kumano Nachi) in search of "rebirth" and "spiritual purification" ✨. It’s like Japan’s version of the "Way of St. James" in Spain, earning the title of "Twin Sacred Routes of the East and West." Walking this path truly allows you to feel the solemn atmosphere left by the footsteps of ancient pilgrims. 🏡 Tonight’s Stay "Kumano Kodo G Chikatsuyu," a warm and welcoming guesthouse.
