🌸 Enjoying Nature in Fukuoka, Japan: Spring at Kyushu 2026 🌸 🛩️ We traveled with Thai Airways, outbound flight TG648, departing from Suvarnabhumi Airport at 12:40 AM and arriving at Fukuoka Airport ✈️ at 8:00 AM. After that, we rented a car from AQ Car Rental. 🚗🚙 1. Nanzoin Temple ⛩️⛩️ Located in Sasaguri, this temple is home to a massive bronze reclining Buddha. It's said to be about the same size as the Statue of Liberty in the USA! The temple is famous for attracting people who come to pray for good fortune, wealth, and luck in lotteries. 💰💸 It also serves as the starting point for the Shingon Buddhist pilgrimage route, a famous sect in Kyushu. It boasts the world's largest bronze reclining Buddha, weighing over 300 tons, measuring 41 meters long, and standing 11 meters high. 2. Yufuin Floral Village 🏡⛲️ A charming little village nestled in the valleys of Oita Prefecture, exuding a European vibe. The streets are lined with quaint brick houses featuring restaurants, souvenir shops, and trinket stores. Beautifully decorated with various kinds of flowers, it offers a lovely, warm, and cozy atmosphere. Opening hours: 9:30 AM – 5:30 PM. Free admission! 🎫🎟️ 3. Kuju Flower Park (or Kuju Hana Park) 🌺🌷🌸 A massive park covering over 49 acres (approx. 198,293 square meters). The park features a wide variety of trees and around 500 species of flowers, totaling a staggering 3 million blooms! From mid-May to early June, the park hosts a romantic colorful flower festival showcasing 11 types of spring flowers. Inside the park, you'll also find various restaurants, cafes, snacks, and souvenir shops. Admission fee: 1,300 yen per person. 🎫 4. Aso Mountain Volcano (Mount Aso) 🌋🌋 Located in Kumamoto Prefecture on the island of Kyushu, Japan, it is the largest active volcano in the country and has one of the largest calderas in the world. Currently, the volcanic activity is at a low level. Our first sightseeing spot was the Kusasenri Observatory (about a 500-meter walk), followed by the Kusasenri grasslands. At the Kusasenri grasslands, horseback riding services are available for tourists. 🐎🐎 5. Takachiho Gorge ❄️🛶 Takachiho is a small town in Miyazaki Prefecture in the Kyushu region. The town is renowned for its stunning nature and ancient cultural beliefs passed down for thousands of years. Takachiho Gorge is arguably the town's most famous tourist attraction. Visitors can hike to see the waterfall from a height of 80-100 meters, or choose to view it from below by taking a boat ride through Takachiho Gorge. 6. Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine ⛩️⛩️ This is one of the most important Shinto shrines in Fukuoka, Japan, serving as the head shrine for over 12,000 Tenmangu shrines nationwide. It is highly renowned for blessings related to education, academic success, and wisdom, drawing over 10 million students and tourists each year to pay their respects. The bronze ox statue 🐂🐮 (Sacred Ox): Legend has it that after Sugawara no Michizane passed away, the ox pulling his funeral carriage stopped at this exact spot and refused to budge. As a result, he was buried there, and the shrine was built over his grave. It is believed that rubbing the head of the ox statue will clear your mind, grant you wisdom, and bring you academic success. For health issues, rub the part of the ox's body that corresponds to your ailment, and it is believed you will be healed. Operating hours: Open daily from 6:30 AM – 6:30 PM. This is a ryokan where I stayed during my trip to Aso, Kumamoto. Initially, I didn't have high expectations because the price was affordable, but I was actually much more satisfied than I thought. The room featured a private open-air bath, allowing me to enjoy the hot springs whenever I wanted without worrying about other guests. It was particularly nice to relax and heal in a quiet atmosphere when using it in the evening or early morning. The dinner was also better than expected. We could enjoy unlimited servings of various meats, including beef, beef tongue, and pork belly, and a wide variety of alcoholic beverages were available, such as beer, highball, and sake. On top of that, crab, fruit, and dessert were provided, so there was no need to go out to find other food. The location is a bit away from the center of Aso, so it is quite secluded, with nothing but nature and mountains nearby. However, that was actually an advantage; the day flew by just by enjoying the hot springs, dining, and relaxing within the ryokan. The breakfast the next day was also neat and satisfying. Aso tour in Kumamoto. 🥯 It's called Tanoya, located right at the end of the Aso Monzenmachi shopping street. 🥯 It may be a modest local bakery, but the owner is super friendly and the shop is incredibly spotless. 🥯 Their signature item is the cream puff, affectionately named "Tanoshu" after the shop. 🥯 You can buy them individually wrapped, or in boxes of 4, 6, or 8. If you have a long journey ahead, I highly recommend buying a cooler bag for packing. 🥯 However, for the best taste, it's highly recommended to eat them right after purchasing! 🥯 Their hand-drip coffee is also quite famous, so if you have some time to spare, grab a cup of coffee to go with your treats.

🇯🇵 Kumamoto, Japan 📍 Aso Milk Factory 🥛 It's a signature dairy brand and a top tourist spot representing Kumamoto's Aso region. 🥛 It features both a cafe and a souvenir shop, making it the perfect pit stop during your Mount Aso tour. 🥛 Since their milk is so incredibly fresh, you absolutely have to try their soft-serve ice cream and lattes! 🥛 I brought my own cooler bag to buy some milk to-go, and drinking it right after soaking in the hotel's public bath was just heavenly. 🥛 You can also pick up some great souvenirs, like cookies packaged in clear glass bottles featuring the Aso Milk logo, or even just the aesthetic bottles themselves.

Tucked away in a quiet neighborhood with stretching rice fields, there's a small, charming little cafe. As soon as I walked in, I immediately thought, "Ah, I made the right choice." Aso Volcano in Kyushu, Japan 🌋 is composed of five peaks ⛰️ and is one of the largest calderas in the world. The Nakadake First Crater 🌋 is still actively emitting smoke 💨 and occasionally erupts 🔥. Therefore, visiting Aso Volcano 🌋 requires a bit of luck 🍀. Staff assess daily weather conditions ☀️, wind direction, volcanic activity, and gas concentration to determine if visitors can ascend. On average, only half of the visitors get the chance to see the volcano's interior each year. Early in the morning, we departed from Hakata, feeling a bit worried 😟 about potential closures. Fortunately, we were lucky enough to join the ARIAIR 15-minute helicopter 🚁 tour we had specially booked to get a close-up view of this active volcano 🤩! The moment the helicopter took off, my heart raced 💓 as the breathtaking scenery unfolded like a painting 👏. Vast green fields, the volcanic crater, and lakes were all in full view 🏞️. The pilot 👨✈️ also provided a brief introduction to the history of Aso Volcano 📜, giving us a deeper understanding of this magnificent geological wonder 🌋. During the flight, the interplay of clouds and sunlight outside the window ☀️ made for stunning photos and videos 📸, each one postcard-worthy 😆. Even after landing, my heart was still racing 💥, feeling the heat of the earth and the sound of the wind intertwined 🚁. It was truly an unforgettable experience 👍. Afterward, we headed to the volcano observation area by land. Due to the high-temperature gases 💨 emitted by Aso Volcano 🌋, which contain high concentrations of sulfur dioxide, and the highly acidic sulfuric acid 🧪 in the volcanic lake, the air near the observation area was filled with harmful gases ⚠️, causing immediate eye 👁️ and throat 🗣️ irritation. From the observation deck 🗻, we could see the crater continuously emitting smoke, resembling the breath of nature 💨, which was truly eye-opening 🤩. As this is an active volcano 🌋, there are many evacuation shelters 🛡️ scattered around. After taking a photo nearby, an alarm suddenly sounded 🚨, and many staff members rushed out to instruct us to evacuate immediately. It turned out that the volcano 🌋 had suddenly become more active, with thick smoke 💨 continuously spewing out and harmful gas concentrations rising sharply ⚠️, prompting an immediate evacuation and closure of the area. We then visited Kusasenri-ga-hama 🌾, a vast plain in the area where we could see herds of horses 🐎 leisurely grazing and enjoy views of the smoke from Nakadake's eruptions. There were also souvenir shops and restaurants, where I tried ice cream 🍨 made from Aso milk and even horse meat sashimi. Whether you're seeking thrilling adventures 🌟 or love natural landscapes 🌱, Aso Volcano and the ARIAIR helicopter tour are absolutely worth experiencing ✅. Located in a residential area, it has no big landmarks and feels like a hideaway where you can relax. There is an entrance where you have to bend down to go through and a detached building. This time, I was seated in a detached building, but I enjoyed the retro atmosphere! 🌤Day 3: We departed from Yufuin for a long scenic drive to our next stay in Kumamoto. Our first stop was the Daikanbo lookout, a breathtaking viewpoint along the way in Kumamoto Prefecture. Perched on the edge of the extinct Aso Caldera, it’s easily one of the most stunning and majestic panoramic spots in all of Japan! ⛰️ 🚗After stretching our legs, we hit the road again (a quick heads-up: the restrooms here aren't the cleanest, so try to go beforehand if possible). We drove down the mountain and made a sweet pit stop at the Aso Milk Factory for some ice cream. Their absolute best-seller is the soft-serve and assorted gelato flavors made from authentic fresh milk, served up in a crunchy granola cone. 🍨 💚Moving right along, we stopped for lunch (eating our way through this trip, as always!) at Tonkatsu Hamakatsu Kumamoto. It's a renowned tonkatsu (breaded deep-fried pork) franchise originally from Nagasaki. The Ozu branch here in Kumamoto was the perfect spot to refuel. If you're more into seafood, they have great fish and shrimp options too. Big thumbs up for the incredible taste—authentically Japanese in every bite! 📍 🏰Our next major landmark was Kumamoto Castle. When you're in the city, taking in the sheer grandeur and rich history of this fortress is a must. We kicked back in this classic izakaya-style spot, enjoying chicken and liver skewers. I recently stayed at Pension Angelica in Aso, Kumamoto Prefecture! 🌳 To be honest, the word "pension" used to give me a slightly dated impression, but this place was an incredibly adorable space straight out of a picture book or fairy tale. ✨ While the front desk area still had a charming, nostalgic, and classic vibe, the suite we stayed in was newly renovated, spotless, and absolutely stunning! The lush green views from the window were fantastic, making for a truly relaxing stay. 🌿‬ But above all, what blew me away the most was the food! 😭✨ Dinner was an authentic full-course meal featuring local organic vegetables, Akaushi beef steak, and homemade smoked delicacies. Breakfast was equally impressive, packed with freshly baked bread, warm pastries, and crisp veggies. Both meals were as gorgeous to look at as they were delicious to eat! The portions were generous, and I was completely satisfied. 💯 I highly recommend this inn to anyone looking to unwind with incredible food and a beautiful atmosphere in Aso. "Kurokawa Onsen♨️" is located in Aso City, Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, and is easily accessible by car. Since we arrived on a weekend, four free parking lots🅿️ were open to accommodate the massive crowd of tourists! Driving inside the hot spring town is prohibited; cars must be left in the designated parking areas. Kurokawa Onsen is a traditional hot spring resort town where all the ryokans (inns) are built in a classic wooden style, completely free from over-commercialization. You can stroll around and grab a bite at the bustling local hot spring shops, souvenir stores, and eateries, enjoying treats like soft-serve ice cream🍦, Dora Dora cream puffs, and cheese! You'll spot clever little Kumamon decorations everywhere throughout the town, including on the wooden wishing plaques. Many visitors love strolling down the narrow streets of Kurokawa Onsen dressed in traditional Japanese kimonos and geta (wooden clogs) stamped with the town's name. Walking down these streets to the natural white noise of the wind rustling through the treetops and the babbling stream creates an absolutely incredible atmosphere! Kurokawa Onsen feels like a hidden utopia forgotten by the rest of the world, quietly waiting for travelers to come and unwind. 🌋An active volcano with one of the world's largest calderas, located in the central part of Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan - () 🌋Mount Aso isn't a single peak, but rather a collective term for the "Five Mountains of Aso" (阿蘇五岳)—Nakadake, Takadake, Nekodake, Eboshidake, and Kishimadake—and the massive caldera surrounding them. 🌋It is said that the current massive caldera was formed by ground collapse following four huge eruptions between roughly 270,000 and 90,000 years ago. Today, the central cone, Nakadake (中岳), remains highly active, periodically emitting smoke. Mountain access is sometimes restricted based on volcanic alert levels. Fortunately, on the day of my visit, I was able to see everything up close. 🌋We got to witness the highly active Nakadake Crater 1 (中岳火口) with our own eyes. We were extremely lucky to catch a glimpse of the mysterious emerald-green sulfur lake inside the crater. Since entry can be restricted depending on volcanic gas emissions, you must check the real-time regulations before visiting. 🌋Kusasenri (草千里ヶ浜), a massive 780,000-square-meter grassland spreading across the northern foot of Eboshidake, features large ponds and grazing 🐎 horses, creating a picture-perfect landscape. You can enjoy horseback riding here or go for a light trek along the meadow. 🌋Since ancient times, volcanic activity was considered a display of the gods' anger or power. Built to appease them, the ' ' has a history of over 2,000 years. This Aso Shrine serves as the head shrine for the roughly 450 Aso shrines across Japan. If lost, it is immediately voided, and the rest of your booked trips are automatically canceled. You must insert both the JR Pass and your reserved seat ticket into the ticket gate together. 2. Book your reserved seats for the Yufuin no Mori train a month in advance (Seats C and D in Car 3 are ideal). I highly recommend booking all eligible reserved train seats online beforehand and picking them up all at once upon arrival. Otherwise, you'll have to go to the manual ticket counters later, which is quite inconvenient. 3. Book the Matsushima dolphin watching cruise online in advance (the 1:00 PM slot is recommended), and also book the round-trip ferry from Misumi Station to Matsushima. Don't panic if you can't find a suitable time online. Plan your schedule ahead, arrive at Misumi Station early, exit the station, and walk straight to the ticket office with the white pointed roof to buy your round-trip ferry tickets on the spot. If you're running late, you can change your cruise ticket to the 3:00 PM slot, or just grab a taxi right outside the station to Matsushima. A round-trip ferry costs 2,000 yen per person, while a one-way taxi is about 4,800 yen. If you have a group and are short on time, taking a taxi is definitely a great option. It’s slightly pricier, but if you miss the sightseeing cruise that day, you'll only get a 50% refund, which is a huge loss. There's a 90%+ chance of seeing dolphins—there are so many, they get super close, and it’s totally worth it! If you don't see any, keep your ticket receipt; you can go again for free within a year. 4. Right outside Miyajimaguchi, there's a streetcar that goes directly to the Atomic Bomb Dome. Right outside the Atomic Bomb Dome Museum, there's a bus that takes you directly to the JR station—super convenient. 5. Head to Lake Kinrin in the evening to take photos of the reflection of Tenso Shrine. If you walk back to the station slowly, you'll be right on time for the last limited express train. Make sure to check the train schedule! If you miss those trains, you won't get back to Hakata until midnight. 6. There really isn't much to see at Kumamoto Castle; a quick photo op is enough. It's honestly not as fun as going to Matsushima to watch the dolphins. Mount Aso is definitely worth visiting though. If you go, I suggest heading out early in the morning and just taking a quick walk around the top for photos. 7. At Fukuoka Airport, you need to take a shuttle bus to enter the restricted area, so whether you take the subway, a taxi, or a bus, it's all the same. It's very close to Hakata Station.

🇯🇵 Kumamoto, Japan 📍 Aso Torimiya (阿蘇とり宮) ✔️ This is Torimiya, located in the Aso Monzenmachi Shopping Street right across from Aso Shrine. ✔️ It operates as a butcher shop, and its most famous menu item is the "Marokke" (馬ロッケ), a croquette made with horse meat. ✔️ They make them fresh to order, so you'll get a buzzer and have to wait a little bit. But in return, you get to enjoy a delicious, piping hot, freshly fried croquette! ✔️ Be sure to drop by for a quick bite if you get hungry during your Mt. Aso tour in Kumamoto.
