Back from Lithuania: 3 days of travel that changed my perspective on spending (budget included)
Before I went, I thought all of Europe was ridiculously expensive. After calculating the costs—3 days and 2 nights, including Vilnius Old Town, Trakai Island Castle, and Užupis, covering all food, accommodation, and transport—it was less than 2,000 RMB per person. Turns out, not all of Europe is expensive; you just have to know where to go. 🇱🇹
✨Why visit
🔹Europe's most affordable 'hidden gem': A cup of coffee is €2.50, local beer is €3.50, and a full meal is €10–15. Prices are only 60% of those in Western Europe.
🔹So few crowds it feels private: Unlike Prague and Budapest, which are packed with tourists, Vilnius Old Town is quiet enough to hear your own footsteps.
🔹History so rich you won't want to leave: A UNESCO World Heritage Old Town, the only fully preserved island castle in Eastern Europe, and a hill covered in 200,000 crosses.
🗓️3-day, 2-night relaxed itinerary
Day 1: Exploring Vilnius Old Town
Arrive in Vilnius in the afternoon > Check into an Old Town guesthouse > Vilnius Cathedral (free, a pure white neoclassical building, the spiritual heart of Lithuania) > St. Anne's Church (when Napoleon passed by, he exclaimed, 'I would like to carry it back to Paris in the palm of my hand'; the red brick Gothic spires are layered and breathtakingly beautiful) > Climb the hill where Gediminas Tower is located at dusk (at sunset, the spires of St. Anne's and the layered red roofs look surreal in the golden light) > Dinner at an Old Town tavern to try beet soup and black bread.
Day 2: Trakai Island Castle and Užupis
Morning: Take a 30-minute train/bus from Vilnius to Trakai (a town surrounded by 32 lakes) > Trakai Castle (the only fully preserved island castle in Eastern Europe; the pink brick castle reflects on Lake Galvė; walk across two wooden bridges to the island, pass through the Gothic hall, duke's bedroom, and armory, and climb the tower for a 360-degree view of the lake district forests) > Lunch: Try Kibinai (traditional Karaite pastry) > Rent a small boat to row on the lake or relax on a bench by the shore > Afternoon: Return to Vilnius and explore Užupis (a 'self-proclaimed' micro-nation of artists; cross a small bridge and you're in another world, with graffiti on the walls, sculptures on street corners, and an air full of bohemian freedom).
Day 3: Hill of Crosses and departure
Morning: Take a train north from Vilnius for about 2 hours to Šiauliai, then take a car for 12 km to the Hill of Crosses (a 10-meter-high hill densely packed with over 200,000 crosses, ranging from over 10 meters tall to smaller than a thumb; they make a faint sound when the wind blows, the quietest confession of this land. You can bring your own cross to plant; even if you stand there for just a few minutes, you'll feel something hard to describe) > Afternoon: Departure.

💬Final thoughts
Lithuania isn't the kind of place where you can 'show off your wealth' on social media—it's quiet, niche, and low-key. But after 3 days, you'll understand: some parts of Europe can be enjoyed without spending a fortune. The sunset in Vilnius Old Town, the reflections at Trakai Castle, the sound of the wind at the Hill of Crosses—these priceless things don't cost a lot of money. 🇱🇹
