2026 Ulvik Travel Guide: must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transport & travel experiences (updated in August)

Highlights Ulvik, nestled deep within the Nærøyfjord, is one of Norway's smallest towns. Surrounded by towering mountains, magnificent waterfalls cascade down cliffs into the fjord, while the crystal-clear waters reflect snow-capped peaks and colorful forests, creating a real-life utopia. The town's wooden houses feature traditional Nordic carvings, and gardens bloom with various hardy flowers. Arctic foxes can often be seen lounging in the sun. In winter, the fjord freezes lightly, snow blankets the mountains, and the entire town transforms into a pristine snowy kingdom. Transportation Take a train from Bergen to Voss, then transfer to a fjord bus for a 1.5-hour drive along the fjord road to reach Ulvik. Alternatively, join a fjord cruise day tour to enjoy countless waterfalls and stunning fjord views along the way. Personal Tips 1. The town has limited restaurants, so it's recommended to bring snacks and drinking water. 2. Visit in summer to try kayaking, allowing you to get close to waterfalls and observe wildlife. 3. The hiking trails outside the town are relatively easy, making them suitable for family outings. At the summit, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the majestic Nærøyfjord.

#January2025 A group road trip to Norway always requires careful consideration of both budget and the number of people involved! We chose Hardanger Guesthouse, a five-bedroom riverside villa that perfectly suited our needs for this group's independent travels. As for the historic Kviknes Hotel, don't miss it if you pass by—take a photo! This 18th-century luxury waterfront hotel, located in Balestrand, offers breathtaking views of the surrounding Sognefjord. The surrounding area truly resembles a Chinese ink-splashed landscape painting. After staying at Hardanger Guesthouse, we discovered the camping area across from the guesthouse was also beautiful, offering excellent value for money!

Ulvik Fjord is about 8 kilometers long and 900 meters wide. It is the northern branch of Ulvik Fjord, which in turn is the northern branch of Hardangerfjord. Both Ulvik and Ulvik Fjord belong to the municipality of Ulvik in Westerland County. On April 25, 1940, the entire area was occupied by German invading forces, who destroyed 56 houses in Ulvik in retaliation for Norwegian resistance. As this is not along the main road through Norway, there were few tourists, but the places that made me stop and take pictures were, at least, places that I thought were very beautiful. Norway, which ranks first in the world in my mind for natural scenery, is not entirely attracted by famous attractions such as the Lofoten Islands, the World Natural Heritage Geiranger and the Nærøyfjord, but by countless less well-known places like Ulvik.
