We had an incredible journey last month to Albania and North Macedonia, guided by Ledio from Show Me Albania. Albania is an amazing destination, offering everything from gorgeous beaches and snow-covered mountains to historic landmarks and vibrant cities. Starting in Tirane, we traveled down the coast, visiting Vlore, Himare, Porto Palermo Castle, Sarande, Ksamil, and Butrint. Afterward, we headed inland to experience the Blue Eye, Gjirokaster, and Berat, two breathtaking cities known for their distinct castles and fortresses. We concluded our trip at Lin, Albania and Ohrid, North Macedonia, enjoying the serene beauty of Lake Ohrid. The walk is ~4 km loop from the pass car park to the Maja e Çikës spur (2,044 m optional, 4–5 hrs RT); the mossy half is the first 1.5 km on the north face where the pine shade holds fog year-round. No entry fee, no permit. I took a Vlorë–Sarandë furgon (€6, 1 hr to the pass), started 7:30 a.m. in June. Day 30°C Vlorë, 16°C at the pass, moss dripping. Wore boots; the spur is scree, the forest loop mud-and-needle. Mistake: I walked the Çikës spur at 11 a.m. in July — scree 38°C reflected heat, no pine shade up high, turned back at 1,500 m. Here's how I discovered it. 🚐 7:00 AM — The Road That Hugs The Cliffs The drive from Saranda to Himarë follows a road cut into the mountainside. Every turn reveals a new bay. I arrived at 9 AM. Nobody else was there. I swam alone in a canyon that echoed with the sound of waves. By noon, a few boats arrived. By then I'd already had paradise to myself. 🆓 Free 📍 @Gjipe Beach ⏰ Early morning or nothing ☕ 12:00 PM — Coffee With A View That Costs Nothing Albanians take coffee seriously. In the village of Vuno, perched on a hill above the sea, I found a small café with a terrace hanging over the edge of the world. The owner brought me an espresso so thick the spoon almost stood up in it. Below me, the entire coast unfolded. Corfu floated on the horizon. I paid 70 lek. Seventy. That's less than a dollar. 💸 70 lek (about 0.70 USD) 📍 Café terrace in @Vuno 🏖️ 2:00 PM — The Beach Where Cows Swim Livadhi Beach is a long curve of pale sand. At the far end, away from the few sunbeds, a cow wandered down to the water's edge. It waded in up to its shoulders. It stayed there for half an hour, just cooling off. I swam nearby. We shared the sea. An Albanian family nearby didn't even look up. Apparently this is normal here. I loved it. 🆓 Free 📍 @Livadhi Beach 🍽️ 3:30 PM — Lunch At A Farm That Became A Restaurant Between Dhërmi and Drymades, a family turned their olive farm into a restaurant. It's called Farma e Sopotit. No menu. Just what they grew and raised and picked that morning. Goat cheese drizzled with mountain honey. Grilled vegetables still warm from the sun. Lamb cooked under an iron lid covered in coals. I ate under a grape arbor. The grandmother walked past and patted my shoulder. "Te befte mire," she said. May it do you good. 💸 1200 lek (about 12 USD) 📍 @Farma e Sopotit 🌅 6:00 PM — Himarë Old Town At Golden Hour Himarë has an old town on a hill above the new town. It's mostly abandoned. Crumbling stone houses. A church with a bell tower. Narrow alleys overgrown with bougainvillea. I walked up as the sun began to set. The stone walls glowed gold. Below, the bay was a sheet of hammered copper. I was completely alone. A cat followed me. She seemed to own the place. 🆓 Free 📍 Old town above @Himarë 🍷 8:00 PM — Wine With A Pirate Back by the sea, a man named Kosta runs a bar built from driftwood and old fishing nets. He calls himself a retired pirate. I don't know if I believe him, but he pours a glass of local red wine that tastes like plums and salt air. His bar is basically a wooden shack on the beach. Fairy lights. Reggae music. The waves lap three meters from your feet. I stayed until the moon rose over the sea. 💸 300 lek (about 3 USD) per glass 📍 Driftwood bar on @Himarë Beach 🌌 10:30 PM — Swimming In Phosphorescence Kosta told me about the phosphorescence. Late at night, the plankton in the bay glow when disturbed. I walked into the water in the dark. Every movement of my hands left trails of blue light. I floated on my back and stared at the Milky Way. The water glowed. The sky glowed. I was suspended between two galaxies. This is not an experience you pay for. If you’re visiting Vlorë, the Sazan Island boat tour is definitely worth adding to your itinerary! 🏝️✨ Our tour cost €26 per person and was a full day of swimming, exploring and soaking up those incredible Albanian views. 😍 We set off from Vlorë and our first stop was a beautiful sea cave 🪨🌊. Unfortunately, because we were on a larger boat, we weren’t able to go inside the cave — but the views from the outside were still gorgeous! 📸 Next stop: Sazan Island! 🏝️ We visited our first beach, which was absolutely beautiful. 💙 We had around 1 hour and 30 minutes here, giving us plenty of time to swim 🏊♀️, relax ☀️ or explore the area. 🥾🌿 Then we headed around to the other side of the island to the main beach… and WOW! 😍🌊 This was definitely the highlight of the trip. We had around 3 hours to enjoy the beach, swim in the crystal-clear water and just relax. 🏖️💦 🍽️ Food tip: You can buy food at the beach, and we paid around 2,000 lek for a full plate of food — it was packed! 😋 You can also get a sub there if you fancy something quick. 🥪 💰 Tour price: €26 per person ⏱️ Time at first beach: 1.5 hours ⏱️ Time at main beach: 3 hours 🎟️ Booking tip: You can book the tour online or from one of the many tour operators along the walking street in Vlorë. We found that booking in person on the walking street might be cheaper, so it’s worth checking a few places and comparing prices before you book! 💶😉 ⚠️ A few tips before you go: 🧴 Bring plenty of sunscreen — you’ll be spending a lot of time in the sun! 🧢 A hat and sunglasses are also a good idea. 💧 Bring water to stay hydrated. ⏰ Arrive early! One of the most unforgettable experiences I had during my trip to Albania this June was the Grama Bay & Blue Cave Speedboat Tour from Vlorë. From the moment we left Vlorë Port, the speedboat ride across the crystal-clear Ionian Sea was an adventure in itself. Cruising along the stunning Karaburun Peninsula, surrounded by dramatic cliffs and turquoise water, was absolutely breathtaking. We visited the beautiful Grama Bay, one of the most secluded and untouched beaches in Albania, where I got to swim in the incredibly clear blue-green water and simply enjoy the peaceful surroundings. We also stopped at the beautiful Bristan Bay before heading to the spectacular Haxhi Ali Cave (Blue Cave). Exploring the cave by boat and learning about its fascinating history made the experience even more special. One of my favorite parts was getting into the sea. I can’t swim, but thanks to the life jacket, I was able to enjoy swimming in the open water without worrying. I even challenged myself to jump into the sea from the boat in the middle of the ocean! It was such an incredible feeling and something I never imagined I’d have the confidence to do. The views, the crystal-clear water, the hidden caves, and the thrill of the speedboat made this one of the highlights of my Albania trip. If you’re visiting Vlorë, I highly recommend adding this experience to your itinerary—it’s an adventure you’ll remember forever.

The road to the Albanian Riviera saves its best trick for last. The Llogara Pass climbs to over a thousand metres through cool pine forest, often wrapped in drifting cloud, and then the trees part and the whole Ionian coast drops away beneath you in one breathtaking sweep 🌄. We pulled over at the top where paragliders were launching straight off the ridge into the updraft, the sea a hazy blue line far below. The descent is a series of hairpins that unspools all the way down to the beaches at Dhërmi and Palasë. The temperature swing from misty summit to hot coast in twenty minutes is wild. My tip: do this drive from east to west, coming from Vlorë, so the big coastal reveal is right in front of you, and stop at the pass for a coffee and the view 🚗. A truly authentic diver's hotel, just a 5-minute walk to the pier where liveaboards or day trips depart. Be sure to choose a stone room with an arched ceiling and stunning views of the bay. The bathroom is very simple, but the bed is extremely comfortable, and the room includes a fridge and kettle. The staff is very friendly, and as a solo female traveler, I had no issues. The setup is compact, featuring just a bar and restaurant where you can enjoy delicious à la carte meals. Drinks are very affordable and tasty. The breakfast is basic but well-prepared. However, the Wi-Fi works only sporadically, so it’s best to get an eSIM.
