Finally saying goodbye to the gloomy weather this weekend! With good weather, outdoor activities are a must 🌿
Here’s a list of 10 outdoor spots within 1.5 hours of Philadelphia that we often visit. It includes gardens, forests, parks, and some lesser-known estates! (Listed from farthest to closest)
1️⃣ Duke Farms (1.5h) P5-8
A massive ecological farm where you can bike or hike. Bikes are available for rent in the park.
2️⃣ Grounds For Sculpture (1.5h)
A combination of art and gardens, perfect for photography. It feels like an outdoor art museum. (Avoid the French restaurant inside—it’s not worth it.)
3️⃣ Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve (50min)
A relatively unknown wildflower preserve with a more natural and wild vibe. It’s especially stunning during spring when flowers bloom.
4️⃣ Valley Forge National Historical Park (45min) P12
A large grassy area combined with a historical park, ideal for picnics, kite flying, and leisurely walks (free entry).
5️⃣ Tyler Arboretum (35min)
A more natural botanical garden with treehouse trails. It’s quiet and comfortable (tickets required).
6️⃣ Ridley Creek State Park (30min)
A mix of forest and creek! A favorite among locals, perfect for unwinding.
7️⃣ Morris Arboretum & Gardens (25min) P6-11
UPenn’s botanical garden with a treetop walkway. Great for photography and worth visiting in both spring and fall.
8️⃣ Chanticleer Garden (25min) P1-P4
A garden with strong design elements and meticulous details, perfect for spring visits. (Parking reservations required.)
9️⃣ Andalusia Historic House, Gardens & Arboretum (20min)
A lesser-known estate garden with great riverside views. It’s elegant and perfect for a leisurely stroll (tickets must be reserved in advance).
🔟 Wissahickon Valley Park (20min) P14-15
Philadelphia’s own “backyard garden.” You can visit anytime, super convenient. (Highly recommend dining at the park’s restaurant! Eating by the creek is delightful.)
These are some of our favorite spots 🌿
It feels like there’s always more to discover around Philadelphia.

The charm of Chanticleer Garden lies in its 'creativity within naturalness.' Unlike other famous botanical gardens that are grand or extravagant, this garden captivates with its unique character and story embedded in every small space, offering continuous surprises as you stroll through. Each structure in the garden is artistically arranged, and the trees, flowers, and grass harmonize to create a distinctive rhythm. I spent a long time reading in the garden, and the sounds of birds and the breeze felt like background music, allowing me to immerse myself even more in the book. Additionally, the arrangement and colors of the plants change with the seasons, making it a place worth visiting multiple times without ever feeling monotonous. Chanticleer Garden is a hidden gem that I highly recommend to anyone who wants to quietly enjoy both nature and art.
Chanticleer Garden in Pennsylvania was lush and vibrant during my summer visit. The trees and climbing plants created ample shade, while the flowers scattered throughout the garden harmonized beautifully with the summer sunlight, enhancing the garden's charm. The area around the pond was particularly striking, with sunlight reflecting off the water adorned with water lilies, creating a sparkling, picturesque scene. It was an excellent place for a stroll with children and perfect for enjoying a picnic. Above all, the garden retained its natural allure without any commercialized feel, offering a sense of tranquility. During my visit, there weren't many visitors, allowing me to quietly walk around and fully immerse myself in nature. Chanticleer Garden in summer is an ideal choice for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and find healing in nature.

Chanticleer Garden (Pennsylvania)
Chanticleer Garden is not just a place to admire flowers; it’s a special space for reflection and inspiration. The entire garden is designed like a massive piece of art, and the most striking area for me was where chairs and sculptures blended seamlessly into the natural surroundings. It felt as if nature and humanity were engaging in a dialogue, and every step revealed something new. I brought a small sketchbook and captured some of the scenes, as the garden’s beauty sparked my creative drive. I also learned that the scenery changes significantly with the seasons, which made me want to visit again during a different time of year. Chanticleer Garden is not merely a tourist destination but an ideal place for those seeking creative inspiration.
The part of Chanticleer Garden that moved me the most was the 'theme gardens.' The garden is divided into several distinct areas, each with a completely different atmosphere. For instance, the path through the thicket felt like an adventure in the forest, while the area near the pond with aquatic plants exuded a calm and serene vibe. Decorations made of stone and wood further emphasized the garden's natural beauty. I was also impressed by the staff's meticulous care in maintaining the garden and their friendly explanations about the plants and history, which made everything easy to understand. Unlike other famous botanical gardens, it wasn't crowded, allowing visitors to leisurely stroll and enjoy nature. I often look back at the photos I took there, and the peaceful emotions I felt at the time come back to me, warming my heart.
Chanticleer Garden is best described as a "living work of art." Unlike larger botanical gardens, this relatively small garden offers visitors a uniquely intimate experience, meticulously maintained to perfection. During my visit, spring flowers were in full bloom, showcasing a vibrant display of tulips and hyacinths. The garden's design is filled with creative touches at every corner, making it feel like strolling through an outdoor art museum. The seamless blend of natural landscapes with artistic human intervention highlights the gardener's exceptional sense of artistry. Sitting on a bench, listening to the birdsong, I found myself rediscovering a sense of tranquility often lost in urban life. Though not expansive, Chanticleer Garden delivers profound emotional impact through its charming and intimate scale.
