This is Qing Yongling, the ancestral mausoleum of the Qing imperial family, ranking first among the three Shengjing mausoleums of the early Qing Dynasty. Construction of Qing Yongling began during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty. It was initially called Xingjing Mausoleum and was renamed Yongling in the 16th year of the Shunzhi reign. The mausoleum houses the remains of Qing Taizu Nurhaci's sixth-generation ancestor, great-grandfather, grandfather, father, as well as his uncles. The high seniority of the occupants and the large number of tombs are notable features of this ancestral mausoleum. The earthen and stone rammed walls follow the natural terrain of the mountains, making it the best-preserved Jurchen mountain city capital in China. Entering the city, the octagonal Khan’s palace and main government office stand out, with eight eaves corresponding to the Eight Banners system. More than 400 years ago, Nurhaci declared himself emperor here in yellow robes and established the Later Jin regime, marking the beginning of the historic struggle for control of the Central Plains. The former residence of Taksi is quiet and surrounded by greenery; this is the small courtyard where Nurhaci was born. The Han King’s well, which has never dried up for a thousand years, quietly tells stories of the past. The remains of the Plain White Banner government office are well preserved, faintly showing the political structure of the Eight Banners at that time. Walking on the ancient city’s stone paths, there is none of the luxury or complexity of an imperial city, only the unique simplicity and vastness of a mountain city beyond the Great Wall. On both sides are low houses and vegetable fields. Occasionally, a motorcycle passes by, kicking up a cloud of dust. At the end of the road, a hill less than one square kilometer stretches across your view—this is Yanglu Mountain. There are no grand halls or rows of stone elephants on the mountain, only a few sections of grayish-blue enclosing walls peeking through the tree shadows. This is Dongjingling, the first ancestral tomb of the Later Jin established by Nurhaci, the Qing dynasty’s founding emperor. In 1621, after Nurhaci captured Liaoyang, he made it his capital.
