Who says Xuanwei is only about ham? This route, blending culture and engineering marvels, will completely refresh your perception of small towns in Yunnan. July in Xuanwei is ridiculously cool, with daytime temperatures around 23–24°C, so you won't even break a sweat walking around all day. This time, I'm taking the road less traveled with a 3-day slow-paced itinerary covering Kedu Ancient Town, the Beipanjiang Bridge, and Dongshan Mountain. It's incredibly uncrowded and offers a top-tier experience. 🏛️ Stop 1: Kedu Ancient Town It's just a 40-minute drive from downtown Xuanwei, and this place is seriously underrated. It was an important pass on the Southern Silk Road, and the name Kedu originated from Zhuge Liang's southern expedition. Two thousand years of history are carved into the bluestone slabs. The ancient town is free to enter, with the Kedu Pass site and the ancient post road as the highlights. The bluestone surface of the Five-Foot Road is deeply grooved by horse hooves; step on it, and you can almost hear the bells of the ancient caravans from a millennium ago. Walking along the post road to Guanyin Pavilion, you'll see ancient architecture built on the cliffside, its eaves reflected in the Kedu River, so quiet you can hear the wind passing through the leaves. There's almost no commercialization in the town; local elders sit at their doors soaking up the sun, and dogs lie in the middle of the road, too lazy to move. Walking along the river, the opposite bank is Guizhou—the feeling of crossing two provinces with one river is magical. I recommend setting aside 2–3 hours to explore slowly; don't rush. Here's the key—don't drive directly onto the expressway! Search for "Beipanjiang Bridge Viewing Platform" on your navigation app. The viewing platform on the Guizhou side is easier to reach, and parking costs 5 yuan. Standing at the viewing platform and looking up, the massive bridge looms overhead, and vehicles move like tiny beetles on top. Photos just can't capture that visual impact. Go early in the morning to see the sea of clouds surging up from the canyon, making the bridge appear and disappear like a fairyland. In the evening, the sunset hits the bridge, and the golden light is spectacular. The viewing platform is free, and 20 minutes is enough time to stay, though photography enthusiasts might want to wait for the sunset. ⛰️ Stop 3: Dongshan Scenic Area On the way back to downtown Xuanwei, stop by Dongshan. It's 5 km from the city, part of the Wumeng Mountain range, with the main peak at an altitude of 2,868 meters—the highest point in Xuanwei. The scenic area is open 24 hours, and Dongshan Temple is open from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Dongshan is a hidden leisure gem for locals, with dense, tranquil forests. Reaching the summit offers a panoramic view of the entire city of Xuanwei. In July, the pine trees on Dongshan rustle in the wind, and the forest paths are filled with the scent of pine needles. Dongshan doesn't require an admission ticket, and parking is free, but there's no water for sale on the mountain, so bring your own. You'll need to drive or charter a car between the three spots as public transportation isn't very convenient; carpooling with four people is the most cost-effective option. The place I stayed this time was in an alley in the ancient town, a renovated old courtyard with wooden doors, copper locks, and bluestone slabs. Pushing open the courtyard gate reveals a patio with a pomegranate tree full of fruit. The room retains the old wooden beam structure, but the bathroom is brand new, making for a very comfortable sleep. The owner is a local uncle who, knowing I was going to Kedu, specifically wrote a note marking which section of the post road is the most photogenic and from which angle to best photograph the bridge—much more reliable than online guides. There's a tea table in the courtyard; coming back at night to brew a pot of Pu'er tea, listen to the insects, and watch the stars—this is what summer should be like. Xuanwei's summer is a unique experience woven from the weight of a millennial ancient road and the awe of the world's highest bridge; it's not your typical internet-famous check-in spot.
