After retirement, I turned traveling into a way of life. This time I stayed in Zhaotong for 5 days, and finally understood the rhythm of this "autumn city." Day 1 arrival, check in downtown, and in the evening visited Qingguan Pavilion Park. This Qing Dynasty garden is small and exquisite, with sculptures reflecting integrity culture complementing the ancient pavilion. Locals gather to play chess and sing, full of everyday life atmosphere (most photos in this issue were taken here). Day 2 explored the waterfall group at Huanglian River Scenic Area, then leisurely strolled through the old county town of Yanjin. The stilted buildings cling to the mountain and river, just like a movie scene. Day 3 went to Yanjin Dousha ancient town to see the Dousha Pass "Five-foot path" on the cliff and the primeval forest of Xiaocaoba. Day 4 climbed Dashanbao, where the canyon is shrouded in mist. The sea of clouds at 3,000 meters elevation is breathtaking. Day 5 reserved for the city. In the morning, walked the steep streets, guild halls, and courtyards of Zhaotong ancient city. In the afternoon, took a lakeside walk around the Shengeng Confucian Culture Park, then visited the nearby Shengeng Shanshui Water Street to enjoy some grilled skewers and Yunnan mushroom hot pot—perfect. ‼️Tips: These parks in the city are close to each other, reachable by walking or a taxi with a base fare. After 5 days, I saw historic sites, mountains, rivers, and old streets. Leibo, a mountain city in the folds of Daliang Mountain, belongs to the Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan Province, located at the junction of Sichuan and Yunnan. The whole country is surrounded by mountains and rivers, with the majestic Daliangshan Mountains on one side and the endless Jinsha River on the other, presenting a magnificent landscape of three mountains and two rivers. Repo is a small city with magnificent mountains and rivers and pure humanities. Its beauty is native, vast, clean and quiet. It has both the majesty and vastness of Daliang Mountain and the gentleness and tranquility of lakes and streams. It is the most worthy of slow walking and enjoying the small secret place in Sichuan. In the early morning, the mist fills the streets and alleys. Local people in Liangshan can be seen everywhere on the streets. The wind carries the clear air of mountain vegetation. The buildings are spread out layer by layer along the mountain, and the distant mountains are covered with light clouds and fog all year round. Surrounded by mountains, the small town is unhurried, hiding the unique gentleness and vastness of the Liangshan Mountains in southern Sichuan. Walking on the streets, you can see the poetry of unmodified mountains and fields when you raise your eyes. There are rustic villages scattered in the mountains, with light fireworks and slow years. There is no impetuosity and haste here, only the stability of the mountains, the calmness of the river, and the peace of the grass and trees. Playing Tips: 1. these photos are the original mountain scenery of Leipo, excluding Mahu, Xiluodu and other places, no commercial attractions, pure natural wild scenery. 2. Yibin West Passenger Terminal has direct services to Leipo County town, and also commercial vehicles, usually three hours can be reached, do not have to change to Chengdu. 3. the county town passenger terminal on the way to Mahu, the scenery is particularly good, do not ignore the scenery outside the window. The scenery on the way from Repo to Shogaku Cliff Village is superb, many of the photos were taken at the above-mentioned place. 4. the county town has a Maliu Bay observation deck, do not miss, you can see the full view of Leibo (Figure 9). Leibo hides the most pristine magnificence of Daliang Mountain, an untapped natural scenery that belongs to the depths of Liangshan Mountain alone. It is surrounded by mountains, nourished by the Jinsha River, the celebrity scenery without deliberate carving, is the most authentic appearance of the nature of heaven and earth, are the most rustic human fireworks. The mountains and rivers are silent and elegance of their own. This is Leibo, an extraterrestrial secret place hidden in the mountains.

When my friend told me about Zhaotong, all I could think of were apples. But after coming here, I realized Zhaotong is far more vast than I imagined. It takes just over an hour by high-speed train from Kunming to Zhaotong. When I stepped out of the station, a cool breeze swept into my collar—22℃. Later, I checked and found that Zhaotong stays around this temperature all summer long, no wonder it’s called the “Summer Backyard Garden Secretly Loved by Sichuan and Chongqing Tourists.” On my second day in Zhaotong, I went to Dashanbao. Standing at the edge of the cliff looking down, there was a bottomless canyon beneath my feet, wind rushing up from the valley floor, and clouds drifting past my feet. I stood at the cliff edge for a long time, the wind almost making it hard to stand, but my eyes couldn’t look away. Locals told me this is the wintering ground for black-necked cranes, where thousands of cranes circle in the valley during winter—I came in the wrong season, but just standing here watching the sea of clouds roll by was worth the trip. On the third day in Zhaotong, I visited Doushaguang. The Wuchidao ancient path is carved into a vertical rock face, with horse hoof prints from the Tang Dynasty still visible on the stones. Standing on the ancient path looking down, the Guan River flows at the bottom of the canyon, and on the opposite cliff, there are hanging coffins of the Bo people. During my three days in Zhaotong, I ate roasted potatoes better than any trendy restaurant, and strolled through streets quieter than any ancient town—no Dali artsy vibe, no Lijiang hustle, but just the right amount of coolness and the perfect pace. 🚄 How to get there? Take the high-speed train to Zhaotong Station, about 1 hour from Kunming, about 2.5 hours from Chengdu. Attractions are spread out in the city, so it’s recommended to rent a car or hire a driver (about 200-300 RMB/day). 🎫 Ticket Information Dashanbao: about 78 RMB (includes sightseeing bus) Doushaguang: about 35 RMB Zhaotong Ancient City: free 🗺️ 3 Days 2 Nights Cool Summer Slow Travel Itinerary Day 1: Zhaotong Ancient City + Shenggeng Park Arrive in Zhaotong in the afternoon, stroll through Zhaotong Ancient City (free), where the cobblestone streets are lined with late Qing and early Republican era buildings, not overly commercialized, with locals sitting at doorsteps drinking tea and chatting. In the evening, take a walk in Shenggeng Park, where the lake reflects the city lights. Day 2: Dashanbao All Day Spend the whole day at Dashanbao—the most stunning natural scenery in Zhaotong. Stand on the great cliff overlooking the canyon, watch the sea of clouds surge, and feel the wind rushing up from the valley floor. Hike through meadows and see herds of cattle and sheep. In winter, you can also see thousands of black-necked cranes. Return to the city in the afternoon. Day 3: Doushaguang + Return In the morning, visit Doushaguang—the Wuchidao ruins, an ancient path carved into a vertical rock face with clear Tang Dynasty hoof prints. On the opposite cliff are the Bo people’s hanging coffins. Stand on the ancient path and watch the Guan River flow at the bottom of the canyon.
