The scenery on the water and along the shore is very photogenic. Sitting quietly and soaking in this tranquility is a gentle experience unique to Xinjiang. Next, we headed to Luoburen Village, stepping into this secret realm within the desert. The Tarim River, poplar forests, and the Taklamakan Desert meet here, where you can explore the traces of the ancient Lop people's lives. Walking through the village, with the vast desert on one side and the river oasis on the other, you can experience the folk customs passed down for thousands of years. Watching the rolling sand dunes and standing poplar trees, you truly feel the unique grandeur of the desert. In the evening, we returned to downtown Korla to visit Hongyan Square. The Yong'an Tower lit up in the twilight, and the Hongyan River shimmered. Welcome, everyone, to our 3-day road trip in Ruoqiang County. This is the second part, covering the third day's itinerary, which focuses on natural scenery. Highlights include seeing the Taklamakan Desert turn into an oasis and discovering a wild Populus euphratica forest that's perfect for a September visit. Stay tuned for a surprise at the end! That post also includes an introduction to Ruoqiang County, so I won't repeat it here. Let's jump straight to the itinerary after the Loulan Museum. Day 3 Stop 2: Taitema Lake After visiting the Loulan Museum, we left Ruoqiang County and got on the G218, with our final destination being Korla City. After driving for an hour, the map indicated we had reached the edge of the Taklamakan Desert. I looked out the window and was instantly wide awake—there were lakes on both sides of the national highway. Where was the desert? Later, I learned this is Taitema Lake, the terminal lake of the Tarim River. It dried up completely in 1983 due to upstream reservoir water retention. Ecological water diversion began 17 years later, in 2000. Another 20 years later, when we arrived, it was a vibrant oasis. That day, dense reeds danced in the wind, and birds sang around them. We stopped for a long time at Taitema Lake, marveling at the miracle of the desert turning back into an oasis, and captured many vivid images. Stop 3: G218 Wild Populus Euphratica Forest The visibility wasn't great that day, and after leaving Taitema Lake, the sandstorm picked up. As we continued, we saw clumps of dead grass rolling along the road with the wind. We looked to the left and discovered a Populus euphratica forest with leaves just starting to turn yellow. This place had no navigation markers or signs. Later, checking the map, we found it was near "Alagan," and the grass on the ground was tumbleweed. They were gathering in large numbers under the forest, making our photos of the Populus euphratica forest unique. We chose to drive in Xinjiang in autumn partly to avoid the peak tourist season and partly to enjoy the autumn colors, with the Populus euphratica forest being a key highlight. We didn't expect to find it at our first stop in Xinjiang, especially with such a unique setting and dreamy scenery. I read that tumbleweeds appear in the same season and environment every year, so those driving on this section of the G218 in September or October should keep an eye out for this forest. Stop 4: Alagan Then we arrived at Alagan. We didn't know it was called Alagan at the time either; we just saw on the map that the Tarim River crossed the G218 almost vertically here. You can also witness the results of the Tarim River water diversion project here. Ancient Alagan, located on the banks of the Tarim River, was once home to the Lop people. Later, the Tarim River dried up, and plants like Populus euphratica and red willow died, causing everyone in the area to move away. The Tarim River ecological water diversion project started in 2000. When we stopped here over 20 years later, the river was clear and stretched into the distance. The Populus euphratica trees on both banks were tall and dense. In front of the forest were red willow bushes, which were blooming when we arrived—a hazy, dreamy purple-red, drifting gently among the Populus euphratica like brilliant clouds in the breeze. That day, we once again witnessed the miracle of the desert returning to an oasis. Easter Egg: Sandstorm Maybe not an easter egg, more of an "unexpected event," but it was definitely a special experience in our 13 years of road trip history. Remember when I said the air quality wasn't good at the wild Populus euphratica forest? After passing Alagan, a wall connecting heaven and earth suddenly appeared in front of us. Before we could even stop to think, we drove into a 70-kilometer-long sandstorm! Outside the window, I truly understood the meaning of idioms like "dark and gloomy" and "no light of day" in nature. At first, we could still see shadows of Populus euphratica and red willow in the yellow sand, but later, there was only sand everywhere, and we could only drive at idle speed. ↑Check out our vehicle inspection in Korla the next day to see the power of the sandstorm. Finally, after an unknown number of kilometers, visibility improved slightly, and we arrived at what looked like a village (no mobile data, couldn't determine location in the sandstorm). Large trucks were all parked on the side, and traffic police directed us into a side road to wait until the sandstorm weakened before letting us pass.
