Stayed in a mountain flower grassland room in Tacheng, and the aftereffects were intense
🌸 Preface
If spring in Xinjiang begins in Ili, then summer definitely starts in Tacheng. In July, the wildflowers on Balruke Mountain are still in full bloom, the grass on the Tuerjialiao Prairie shines green, and the snow-capped mountains glisten silver in the distance. Every snapshot looks like a painting.
This small border town hidden in the western part of northern Xinjiang doesn’t have many tourists but boasts the most pristine natural scenery. This article compiles a 2-day, 1-night in-depth guide to Balruke Mountain, taking you into "China’s Little Switzerland."

📍 Day 1: Peony Valley · A Pink Ocean in the Valley
🌺 Peony Valley is the most famous spot on Balruke Mountain and the largest wild peony growing area in Xinjiang. Every June to July, countless peonies bloom across the hills, turning the entire valley into a pink ocean, unbelievably beautiful.
✅ Must-visit spots:
🔸 Flower Sea Hiking
Walk along the wooden boardwalk deep into the flower sea, surrounded by pink peonies—it feels so dreamy. It’s recommended to go further into the valley where there are fewer people and denser flowers, making photos even better.
🔸 Viewing Platform Overlook
There is a viewing platform high up in the valley where you can overlook the entire Peony Valley. From here, the pink flower sea stretches along the valley, with green grasslands and snow mountains in the distance, creating a rich layered view.
🔸 Photos Among Flowers
Peony Valley is incredibly photogenic! It’s best to wear light-colored clothes; standing anywhere in the flower sea makes for stunning shots. But remember not to step on the flowers—stick to the boardwalk.
⏰ Recommended visit time: 3-4 hours
🎫 Tickets: Included in the Balruke Mountain scenic area package
💡 Tips: Early July is the peak bloom period for peonies. If you want to go, be sure to arrive early as the bloom period is short.

📍 Day 2 Morning: Tuerjialiao Prairie · The Noble’s Pasture
🌿 Tuerjialiao Prairie means "Noble’s Pasture" in Kazakh. Located at the foot of Balruke Mountain, this prairie is lush with water and grass, dotted with wildflowers, and is one of the most beautiful grasslands in Tacheng.
✅ Must-experience:
🔸 Prairie Walk
Tuerjialiao Prairie is very flat and perfect for a stroll. Walking on the soft grass with colorful wildflowers around and the continuous Balruke Mountains in the distance is incredibly healing.
🔸 Horse Riding Experience
There is a horse ranch on the prairie where you can ride horses around. With a coach leading, even beginners need not worry. Riding slowly across the prairie, feeling the breeze, is very pleasant.
🔸 Prairie Sunset
If time allows, be sure to wait for the sunset on the prairie. The setting sun dyes the grassland golden, and the distant snow mountains turn golden too. The whole world feels warm and stunningly beautiful.
⏰ Recommended visit time: Half a day
💡 Tips: The UV rays on the prairie are strong, so be sure to use sun protection. Also, there are many mosquitoes, so bring insect repellent.

📍 Day 2 Afternoon: Xiaobaiyang Outpost · The Place in the Song
🌳 "A little poplar tree grows beside the outpost," the famous song "Xiaobaiyang" is about this place. The Xiaobaiyang Outpost is located at the foot of Balruke Mountain and is the most famous cultural site in Tacheng.
✅ How to enjoy:
🔸 Visit the Outpost
You can enter the outpost to learn about the life of border guards. There is a Xiaobaiyang Memorial Hall inside that tells the story of the little poplar tree, which is very educational.
🔸 Take Photos with Xiaobaiyang
The famous little poplar tree beside the outpost has now grown into a big tree. Be sure to take a photo with it—it’s like checking in at a place from your textbooks.
🔸 Border Scenery
From the outpost’s watchtower, you can see Kazakhstan across the border. Standing on the country’s frontier feels very special.
⏰ Recommended visit time: 1-2 hours
💡 Tips: The outpost is a military management area, so follow the rules and avoid unauthorized photography.

🌲 Taste River Valley is a secret valley in Balruke Mountain featuring forests, grasslands, rivers, and canyons with very diverse landscapes. Hiking enthusiasts must visit.

Walk along the valley with babbling streams on one side and dense spruce forests on the other, soft grass underfoot—very comfortable. The scenery keeps changing, with new surprises at every step.
🔸 Primeval Forest
Taste River Valley has large areas of original spruce forest with tall, upright trees. Sunlight filters through the leaves, creating a special atmosphere. Photos here feel like a Nordic forest.
🔸 Picnic by the Stream
Find a grassy spot by the stream, lay out a picnic mat, eat something, and relax. Listening to the stream and smelling the pine needles is incredibly pleasant.
⏰ Recommended visit time: Half a day
💡 Tips: The valley paths are rough, so wear comfortable hiking shoes. Also, mountain weather changes quickly, so bring rain gear.
