I was staying at the Dayuan Culture Theme Hotel (Mojia Dayuan, meaning the mansion of the Mo’s). It lies on the southern edge of the ancient town. At this location, the three sub-streams of the Yao river converge. The Dayuan Culture Theme Hotel is an antique building itself. Originally the building belonged to the Mo clan. In the old times, the villagers referred to it as Xianshan Study. During the times of New China, the government had used the building as a warehouse storage for food. The house was built in the traditional style of siheyuan, which was a very popular building format, particularly in Beijing, for the thousands of years. Buildings are built on all four sides of a courtyard. This format was usually built to give home to large multigenerational households. The building’s foundation was made of bluestones (limestones) and it took five years just to lay the foundation. In 2008, the government handed this building back to the Mo’s. A leisurely walk within the ancient town of Huangyao will take some three hours or so. The storefronts were all well-kept and the walk was pleasant with many photogenic spots. Huangyao has had a history of over one thousand years. The town came into being during the Kaibao Period of the Song Dynasty. The ancient town went through a period of expansion during the Ming Dynasty, and it thrived during the Qing Dynasty. Because the villagers that live there mostly had the surname of Huang and Yao, this ancient town became known as Huangyao. This cobblestoned part of the town is very picturesque. Set against the famous karst peaks of Guilin, Huangyao breathed antiquity amidst a serene nature. Along comes a sense of self-assuredness over its own historic beauty. I heard that you don't need to buy tickets after 6pm, so I arrived at 5pm and waited for an hour. The security guard was off duty. I stayed at a guesthouse near the ancient town, which I was very satisfied with. I took photos of the sunset and the morning, and I spent a long time staring out the window in the morning. The receptionist was also very enthusiastic. The ancient town is relatively small and basically commercialized, selling fermented black beans, pickled vegetables, and Poria cocos cakes. It's okay to come here to relax, but it's best to drive yourself. Otherwise, you'll have to rush back to Hezhou Station to take the high-speed rail, which is still a bit far away. People say you can’t travel for 500 yuan, but that’s because you haven’t found the right places. Avoid crowds and peak-season prices in August and September. I personally visited these 8 destinations: autumn colors in northern Xinjiang, relaxing seaside spots, cool mountain retreats, and charming small towns. You don’t need much money, but the experience is fully enjoyable. 01 Altay region | Xinjiang Autumn comes early in northern Xinjiang. By late August, Kanas starts showing layered colors. The birch forests shift from green to golden, and the lake looks unreal with its deep blue. Don’t rush straight to the fish-watching platform. Take the shuttle to Fairy Bay, then walk along the boardwalk toward Moon Bay. This hike is less crowded, letting you hear the wind and birdsong—much better than the packed viewing platform. The evening light is soft, and the lake looks like it’s sprinkled with silver. Koktokay features canyons and rocks, perfect for geology lovers. Tickets plus shuttle cost about 100 yuan, enough for a half-day trip. You don’t need to hunt for cultural spots on the Altay grasslands. Hire a local driver, and stop whenever you see herders moving their flocks. Those scenes are more vivid than any tourist site. ⚠️ Snow starts appearing after mid-September. Temperatures vary greatly between day and night. Bring a down jacket, not just a light coat. 🚄 There are many flights from Urumqi to Altay. Book early for tickets just over 300 yuan, saving time compared to the train. 02 Qinhuangdao city | Hebei If you want to see the sea without overspending, Qinhuangdao is cheaper than Qingdao or Weihai. Beidaihe Scenic Area is free to enter. Pigeon Nest Park is perfect for sunrise. Get there by 4 AM to claim a spot. When the sun rises from the horizon, the whole beach lights up. After sunrise, don’t rush off. Walk the nearby wetland boardwalk to spot migratory birds. For lunch, head to Liu Village night market and find a seafood place with water tanks at the entrance. Order spicy stir-fried clams and mantis shrimp. It costs about 60–70 yuan per person. Shanhaiguan offers a different vibe. The city gate of the First Pass Under Heaven looks best after 4 PM, bathed in warm orange light with long shadows—great for portraits. ⚠️ Weekend accommodation in Beidaihe doubles in price. Thursday is the best value. 📍 Stay near Beidaihe seaside bus station. Pigeon Nest and Tiger Stone are within walking distance, and buses are convenient. 03 Shiyan city | Hubei Wudang Mountain is windy, but August and September are great for escaping the heat. Don’t hike all the way from the base. Take the sightseeing bus to Taizipo, then walk to Zixiao Palace. This shaded path is easier and peaceful, with Taoist temples nestled on the mountainside. Have a simple vegetarian noodle bowl near Zixiao Palace for 15 yuan. It’s light but comforting. In the afternoon, continue to the Golden Summit. If the cable car line is long, hike up the Ming Shen Trail. The steps are steep but the views are worth it. At the top, the sea of clouds is breathtaking. ⚠️ Mountain lodging is expensive. To save money, stay in Wudangshan town at the base for about 100 yuan per standard room, then enter the mountain early next day. 🚄 Shiyan East Station has a direct bus to Wudang Mountain scenic area, about 1 hour. A taxi costs around 40 yuan. Suitable for moderately fit young travelers. For elderly or children, use the cable car and sightseeing bus for an easier trip. 04 Zhengzhou city | Henan Zhengzhou isn’t a typical tourist city, but spending two days exploring reveals surprises. Qinwei Water City is a newly built ancient-style district. It looks charming at night with the lights on. Snacks inside are affordable, like a bowl of braised noodles for just over 20 yuan. Songshan Shaolin is the main attraction. Don’t just watch the martial arts show. The path from Shaolin Temple to the Pagoda Forest is very quiet, with dappled shadows and a Zen atmosphere. Xiliu Lake Park is free and popular with locals for evening walks. The lake reflects the city skyline, perfect for sunset silhouettes. The museum requires advance booking. It’s free but spots are limited. The Jiahu bone flute and lotus crane square pot are must-sees. Rent an audio guide for 20 yuan. Two hours is enough. ⚠️ The museum is closed on Mondays. Don’t go in vain. 📍 Stay near Erqi Square. Metro Line 1 goes directly to the museum and Xiliu Lake, making travel easy. 05 Zibo city | Shandong After the barbecue boom, Zibo’s prices remain reasonable. Zhoucun Ancient Mall is the core area. Tickets cost 60 yuan but it’s worth spending two hours there. The old shops along the bluestone street sell freshly baked sesame flatbreads for 5 yuan each, incredibly fragrant. You can visit the old dyeing workshop site, where blue printed cloth hangs all around—great for photos. A few hundred meters from the mall is the dry dock area. There’s an old Boshan restaurant serving authentic tofu boxes and crispy pots. It costs about 50 yuan per person, much better than the touristy spots. ⚠️ Don’t buy glassware inside the mall; prices are doubled. Visit the Zibo Glass Museum’s cultural shop nearby for the same items at half price. 🚄 A taxi from Zibo Station to Zhoucun takes about 25 minutes. Bus 34 also goes there but is slower. 06 Hezhou city | Guangxi Hezhou is an underrated treasure in Guangxi with surprisingly low costs. Gupo Mountain is a natural oxygen bar. Tickets plus sightseeing bus cost 70–80 yuan. Waterfalls cascade one after another, and the mist cools the air. In August, it feels several degrees cooler than outside. The Fairy Waterfall at the summit is spectacular. Standing below, you get soaked by the spray—refreshing. Dongtan Ridge is the spot for sea of clouds and sunrise. You need to hike at 4 or 5 AM, about 40 minutes to the top. Seeing the clouds rolling beneath your feet makes the early wake-up worthwhile. ⏰ It’s best to go the day after rain for the highest chance of clouds. Stay near Huangyao Ancient Town. Standard rooms in guesthouses cost just over 100 yuan. The town is free to enter. Lanterns and stone paths at night feel more atmospheric than daytime. 🍜 Don’t miss roadside snacks like oil tea and mugwort rice cakes. They cost just a few yuan but leave a lasting impression. 07 Fuyang city | Anhui Fuyang’s highlight is Bali River, a 5A scenic area with affordable tickets and a comfortable experience. The park is divided into several zones. Start at the Bird Language Forest, home to many rare birds that kids will love. The path to the Chinese Culture Park features ancient-style buildings by the lake, with clean reflections perfect for photos. The most stunning spot is the lake island. A boat ride costs 10 yuan per person. The island has a large reed marsh that rustles soothingly in the wind. The park is large and takes 3–4 hours to explore. Wear comfortable shoes. ⚠️ The park’s snack shops are expensive. Bring your own water and snacks. 📍 Stay in downtown Fuyang. It’s a 30-minute taxi ride to the park. In the evening, visit Qinghe Square where locals relax. Nearby food stalls serve authentic grilled gluten and rolled flatbread. 08 Jixi city | Heilongjiang Jixi is so off the beaten path that many southern travelers haven’t heard of it. But Xingkai Lake in summer looks like the sea. The beach is free and the water is crystal clear. You can spend the afternoon wading and playing in the sand. It’s quiet and less crowded than Beidaihe. Hutou was an important border checkpoint. The ruins are well preserved. Standing by the Ussuri River and looking across, the breeze brings a strong sense of history. ⚠️ Hutou is far from the city. Driving or hiring a car is more convenient. It’s over an hour one way. 🍜 Jixi’s cold noodles are a specialty, sour and spicy, paired with sweet and sour pork. It costs about 30 yuan per person, very filling. ⏰ Visiting in August means catching the Xingkai Lake fishing season. You can watch fishermen haul nets and enjoy freshly grilled fish—so fresh it’s unforgettable. 🚄 There are two morning tourist buses from Jixi Station to Xingkai Lake. If you miss them, you’ll need to carpool. Among these 8 places, I personally recommend Altay and Hezhou the most—one for legendary autumn colors, the other for excellent summer cooling.
