Reasons to Recommend: After successfully Christianizing the people of Cebuano, Magellan crossed the Channel to Mactan in an effort to spread his religious beliefs. He underestimated the fighting spirit of the island's chief, Labrabu, and his troops. Magellan was killed in the battle for supremacy and freedom before going ashore on April 27, 1521. Efforts to retrieve Magellan's body ended in vain, despite a trade in jewelry and spices to get his body. His monument was erected in 1866 to commemorate the martyrdom of the Portuguese explorer.
