Standing under Hadrian&#39;s Arch, the sunlight penetrates the mottled stone gate, as if the Roman legions 2,000 years ago were marching past. This best-preserved ancient Roman city in the Middle East was once the pearl on the Silk Road, but it slept for a thousand years in the 8th century earthquake and was not awakened until 1806 by German explorers. Today, every stone slab is like an open history book, and I have become the most devout reader.
