Just returned from northern Thailand by land! Personally tested the silky smooth border crossing + avoid pitfalls, full details throughout the journey👇 🚌 Transportation route & cost 1️⃣ Chiang Rai → Chiang Khong Port Pick-up point: Chiang Rai Bus Station No. 1, parking space 6/9, buy a ticket on the bus (140 baht), tell the driver "Friendship Bridge" Frequency: one bus every hour after 9 o'clock, 3 hours to the port, it is recommended to go early! Thailand exit: Super fast! After passing through customs, you need to buy a 25 baht shuttle bus to the Laos port (must take) 2️⃣ Laos visa on arrival Fee: 20 dollars (the most cost-effective!)/1000 baht/200 RMB, prepare US dollars in advance! Avoid pitfalls: After filling in the form, pay 40 baht "stamp fee" at the window (you can't pretend to be stupid if you want money in Chinese), get your passport back, go to the next window and wait for your name to be called, and pass the customs with the slip. 🛺 Transportation from Houei Xai to Luang Namtha Transportation after entry: Tuk-tuk 100 baht/65,000 jeep to the city or station (no other options, bargaining is invalid) Options at Houei Xai Station: ✔️ Direct to Nadui: departure from 7:00-10:30, 250k jeep, a must if you want to catch the afternoon train! ❌ Arrival in the afternoon: You can only take the 16:30 bus to Luang Namtha (200k jeep), and then transfer to Nadui to take the train back to China the next day ⚠️ Road condition warning: Houei Xai → Luang Namtha is a winding mountain road + large trucks! The last hour was so bumpy that I doubted my life, and motion sickness medicine is a must! 💰 Currency exchange & must-have items Exchange dollars in Chiang Rai: the exchange point on the right hand side of the entrance of Bus Station No. 1, the exchange rate is good! Costs in Laos: A small amount of cash in the jeep (tuk-tuk/tips), most of which can be paid with UnionPay cards 📝 Key Tips 1. Use US dollars to save half of the visa on arrival, don't choose RMB! 2. Take the early bus from Huay Xai to Nadui, and you can only stay overnight in Luang Namtha in the afternoon (accommodation is about 80 yuan/night) 3.
