In the Canakkale Military Museum, there is a city of Chimerik built by Sultan Mohammed II in the mid-15th century. Along the stone walls, artillery used during the First World War is arranged in an orderly manner. . There are also cannon displays inside the city walls. When the weather is fine at sunset, you can watch the afterglow of the sunset fall on the mottled old wall and ancient bricks, which is vicissitudes and gorgeous.Canakkale · 1.6km from downtown

Hagia Sophia

Hagia Sophia faces the Blue Mosque across the street. Originally the main cathedral of the Byzantine Empire, it was converted into a mosque after being occupied by the Turks. This historic building in Türkiye stands as one of the country's most iconic symbols. The exterior of Hagia Sophia features classic mosque domes and minarets, with an ablution fountain (for mosque use) in front and several stone pillars topped with intricate carvings nearby. Nine gates lead to the central hall from the narthex, with the middle one known as the "Imperial Gate," once reserved exclusively for emperors and empresses. The four gates on either side were designated for commoners, while the two middle gates were for nobles and officials. The grand central hall dazzles with multicolored marble floors and walls adorned with vibrant mosaic patterns. Numerous windows and low-hanging chandeliers maintain the hall's lighting, while the ornate lamps create a warm ambiance beneath the towering dome, evoking a sense of awe. The dome preserves Byzantine-style frescoes in rich colors. Above the altar is an image of the Virgin and Child gazing downward. On either side of the altar hang six large black disks with golden Arabic calligraphy, each about 10 meters in diameter, inscribed with names. The right side of the altar marks the coronation spot, while the left features a preaching balcony. A spiral passage at the end of the side corridor leads to the upper gallery, where dignitaries and females once prayed. The gallery walls display numerous frescoes depicting Christian stories. From here, visitors can admire the hall's majestic spatial design, with golden and blue decorative motifs adorning the column capitals, bases, and joints. The intricately carved capitals are breathtaking. Walking along the upper gallery, the "Empress's Lodge" stands to the right, directly above the "Imperial Gate" at the entrance below. From this vantage point, visitors can clearly see the exquisite mosaic artwork embedded above the gate.Türkiye · Istanbul

Basilica Cistern

The Basilica Cistern, located next to Hagia Sophia, served as the palace's underground water reservoir from the Byzantine era to the Ottoman Empire. Today, it is considered one of Istanbul's most romantic and mysterious tourist attractions. Entering the cistern, you feel as if you've stepped into another world of Istanbul. The clear sounds of water droplets falling on the surface are constantly heard, and carp occasionally swim in the pool. Dim streetlights lining the edges of the underground passage create a peaceful, deep, mysterious, and captivating atmosphere. This enormous cistern, 140 meters long and 70 meters wide, is the size of a football field. 336 thick Corinthian columns, 9 meters high, support the massive brick vaults, creating a truly impressive sight. Each column features meticulously crafted, unique reliefs. Because of its unique and mysterious atmosphere, it has served as a filming location for productions such as the Hollywood film "Skyfall" and Jackie Chan's "The Accidental Spy." The Basilica Cistern has a very large water storage capacity and is still used by the people of Istanbul today. It is said that if the cistern were completely full of water, it could meet the water needs of the entire city for a month. While the teardrop-shaped columns in the center of the cistern attract the attention of many visitors, the columns on the northwest side of the cistern, supported by two inverted Medusa heads, are one of the most impressive parts of the Basilica Cistern. The history of the Basilica Cistern dates back to the 6th century AD and it was built by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian. Initially, it was used to store water for the nearby palace and buildings. Later sealed, the cistern was rediscovered after the conquest of Istanbul in the 16th century. Bringing water from the forests near the Black Sea, this structure both met the palace's water needs and served as a strategic refuge against enemy sieges. It is truly an underground palace, a product of the imagination.Türkiye · Istanbul

The story of the Trojan Horse comes from ancient Greek legend. It tells the story of a Greek coalition that had been besieging Troy for nine years and was unable to capture it, so they pretended to retreat, leaving behind a huge hollow Trojan horse. The Trojan defenders fell into the trap and fell. The Turks built a huge replica of the Trojan Horse near the old city of Troy. It was actually a large wooden building that looked like a horse. There were stairs at the bottom. Tourists could get on the horse and view the entire Troy plain from the platform of the Trojan horse.

From Asia to Europe After leaving Troy, we are going to Istanbul. In the process, we have to cross the Dardanelles and enter the European part. The Dardanelles is also called the Çanakkale Strait. The Dardanelles and the Bosporus are collectively called the Turkish Straits. They are the dividing line between Asia and Europe and the only way from the Mediterranean to the Black Sea. The Sea of Marmara (the smallest sea in the world) is sandwiched between the two straits. The Bosporus is in Istanbul. In the end, we didn't go there. We will talk about it later. According to the tour guide, because Turkey lost the war with Europe, Europe can pass through the Turkish Straits for free for a hundred years, but it seems that it will expire in one or two years. Will Turkey retaliate? Let's eat melons and see. This strait is passed by ferry, and cars go up together. People can rest in the lounge after getting off the car, which sells souvenirs and food. There is also an activity to feed seagulls on the deck. The seagulls keep chasing the boat. They can catch whatever food people throw accurately. It's amazing, but it's indeed much easier than catching fish. It was cloudy that day, and the photos were a bit gloomy.

The Hagia Sophia was under renovation both inside and out, so taking photos was a bit of a disappointment. The visitor entrance is on the right side of the main gate, and you need to wear a headscarf to enter. We bought our skip-the-line tickets in advance, and although it was Saturday, the lines weren't long. I only spent two hours at the three attractions in total. Although we arrived late, we were able to enter the Hagia Sophia, the Basilica Cistern, and the Blue Mosque smoothly. The Hagia Sophia and the Basilica Cistern are both over 1500 years old. The interior of the Hagia Sophia is weathered by history. Under the same dome, a thousand years ago, Greek chants filled the air, then Latin hymns, and now Arabic calls to prayer—the sounds have changed, but the devout faith in the divine and the spiritual cleansing and awe remain the same. It is a pinnacle of Byzantine architecture and a living fossil of the overlap of Christian and Islamic civilizations. In the past 1500 years, it has undergone four transformations: church—mosque—museum—mosque—and back to mosque. The core architectural marvel is the central dome, approximately 31 meters in diameter and 55.6 meters high, supported by pendentives on a square base. For nearly a thousand years, it was the world's largest cathedral. A single building, layered with Byzantine domes, Ottoman minarets, Kemal Atatürk's secularism, and Erdogan's re-Islamization—this is Hagia Sophia's most unique historical value. While exploring the interior, the wooden windows reminded me of cave dwellings on the Loess Plateau. Even the cathedral's entrances felt like entering a cave, the walls undecorated, just earthen caves. Only the intricate murals on the interior dome hinted at its splendor a thousand years ago.
