Yuantong Ancient Town

5.3
4.6/5
248 reviews
Yuantong Ancient Townwas formed by water and flourished because of its pier. Historical records date back to the Eastern Jin Dynasty, spanning over 1,600 years. The town was first established in the Ming Dynasty. When it was developed into a market town during the Qing Dynasty, it borrowed the name of a temple, which was later simplified to "Yuantong." Thanks to its location as a water and land transport hub, goods were collected and distributed here, attracting merchants from Huguang, Guangdong, and Jiangxi to build guild halls and open businesses. After the bustle of the pier faded, the old streets and deep courtyards remained. On the main street, Qilin Street, the wrap-around corner buildings, carved lattice windows, and courtyard layouts of the Huang and Luo mansions reveal the sophistication of Western Sichuan grand residences in the late Qing and early Republican eras. The Huang Ancestral Hall, the East-meets-WestYuantong Catholic Church, the former residence of anti-British general Wang Guoying, along with the Guangdong Guild Hall and the Xizi Palace, can all be visited on foot. At the end ofBanbian Streetlies the old stone arch bridge, Yongli Bridge, where the stone-carved dragon heads and tails on the piers are still clearly visible. Sitting under the stilt houses by the bridge watching the river flow slowly by, one can truly feel the charm of the "Three Rivers" water town. The Huijiang Bridge over the river is an iron chain suspension bridge. Standing on it is the perfect spot to watch the confluence of the three rivers and the sunset. The town still maintains the slow-paced life of old Western Sichuan: some shops still use long wooden planks as doors, removing them in the morning to open and putting them back in the evening to close. You can sit in a riverside teahouse for half a day with just a cup of plain tea. Around the Qingming Festival each year, the Qingming Chuntai Fair, which has continued for over 300 years, arrives as scheduled. The "Huijiang Old Dragon" parade, rabbit lantern blessings, City God parade, and Sichuan opera performances take turns on stage. The old street is bustling with crowds, just like a living "Along the River During the Qingming Festival" painting.Chongzhou · 12.4km from downtown
Fox River Crossing Forest Camp

Fox River Crossing Forest Camp

5.1
1.0/5
1 reviews
Fox River Crossing Forest Camp has a history behind the "Crossing" in its name. It was once a ferry crossing for boats, and place names like Zhao Family Crossing, Zhang Family Boat, and Shen Family Boat are still in use today. The small town that grew up by the ferry kept the tradition of the market fair alive, and today, you can still find a lively village market just over 100m from the camp. The star of the camp is the vast expanse of tall, native dawn redwood trees, which are decades old. A stream flows through the forest, forming wetlands, with the trees and water reflecting each other like a "forest on water." The forest is lush green in late spring and turns from yellow to red in early winter, both of which are great times for photos. In midsummer, the forest is noticeably cooler than the city, making it perfect for cooling off in the water. You can go kayaking or catch fish in the shallow stream, and swings, trampolines, frisbee, and tree climbing are scattered throughout the forest. At night, there are often bonfires, fireworks, and outdoor movies, and "music + nature" forest performances are also a highlight here. Several Nordic-style forest cabins stand among the trees, creating a fairytale atmosphere. The camp is also home to a little fox, which perfectly echoes the name "Fox River." The little fox often comes out to meet everyone; visitors can watch it up close, take photos, and even feed it at certain times, which is very therapeutic.Chongzhou · 13.2km from downtown

Museum Cluster Jianchuan

5.6
4.8/5
2.8k reviews
Museum Cluster Jianchuan is one of the larger private museums in China, featuring four major themes: the War of Resistance, folk customs, the red era, and earthquakes. The buildings in the cluster were designed by renowned architects, and admiring these diverse architectural styles is a delight in itself. Museum Cluster Jianchuan not only gathers over 20 small museums in one area but also features commercial facilities such as hotels, teahouses, and antique shops within the museum complex. An artificial lake in the northern part further enhances the site's resemblance to a large leisure park. The renowned anti-Japanese war series in the museum area consists of five exhibition halls and three squares. Each hall displays the hardships of the war years through precious historical materials, artifacts, photos, and scene reconstructions. Among them, the mainstay hall, with its orange-red cubic exterior, is also the first stop for visitors. The folk culture series consists of six exhibition halls. Each hall houses a diverse collection of folk artifacts from western Sichuan and across the country, including a wide variety of items such as plaques, embroidered shoes, and foot-binding cloths. The red era series showcases that revolutionary period to modern people through various forms of coupons, Cultural Revolution propaganda posters, and audio-visual products like gramophones and slides. The 5.12 earthquake relief memorial hall is open to the public for free. The slightly oppressive space is filled with collections related to the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake. With so many pavilions, it is advisable to choose one or two from each series based on your interests.Dayi · 15.4km from Chongzhou

Mount Qingcheng

8.9
4.6/5
34.3k reviews
Mount Qingcheng has long been praised as "Tranquil Paradise under Heaven," with its peaks encircling like city walls—hence the name. Legend says Zhang Daoling of the Eastern Han dynasty established Taoism here in a thatched hut, making it the ancestral home of Celestial Master Taoism, where temple incense still burns today. The mountain divides into front and back sections: the front features Taoist temples and cultural relics, commonly referred to as "Mount Qingcheng" by most travelers; the back excels in natural landscapes like pools, waterfalls, streams, and gorges, making it ideal for hiking and summer retreats. The highlights of Qianshan are concentrated. Starting from Jianfu Palace beside the mountain gate, follow the ancient stone steps upward past Natural Picture, Tianshi Cave, Chaoyang Cave, and Shangqing Palace, with the summit's Laojun Pavilion as the final vantage point. Tianshi Cave, also called Changdao Temple, is one of the mountain's largest Taoist complexes—its front courtyard holds a millennium-old ginkgo tree allegedly planted by Zhang Daoling, while the cliffside Ink-throwing Trough behind is said to be where the celestial master drew mountains with vermilion ink. Painting master Zhang Daqian once resided at Shangqing Palace, styling himself "Guest of Qingcheng." At the mountain's base, Yuecheng Lake's mirror-like waters add ethereal beauty to the lush greenery. The rear mountain entrance is the quaint Tai'an ancient town. From here, the trails connect Wulong gully and Feiquan gully into a loop, with views like Misty spring triple pools, Double spring water curtain cave, and Hundred-zhang long bridge accompanied by the sounds of water and shaded woods. The Longyin gorge walkway built along cliffs overlooks rushing streams below, making it a dedicated hiking route. The mountain stays pleasantly cool even in midsummer. The front mountain and back mountain entrances are not connected, usually requiring separate itineraries. Most 1-day tours choose one of the two. The front mountain's main temples can be visited in half a day, while the back mountain loop is longer and requires reserving most of a day. Travelers wishing to see the sunrise often ascend the mountain a day early, staying overnight at mountain temples for convenient morning viewing.Dujiangyan · 32km from Chongzhou

Jiezi Ancient Town is more than just hot springs and the fragrant Luodai River! This time, I discovered tons of hidden cultural spots and delicious restaurants. Less crowded and quieter, you can savor the slow pace of the ancient town. Quickly gather your family and friends and go! The ginkgo forest turns a vibrant yellow in autumn, with sunlight filtering through the leaves—the atmosphere is simply breathtaking! I recommend wearing Hanfu (traditional Han clothing) for photos; every shot will look like a movie still. Remember to bring a telephoto lens to capture the moment the leaves fall! The museum commemorating Chang Qu, the pioneer of local history, is a fantastic place to learn about ancient Shu history from the *Huayang Guozhi*. The exhibits are beautifully designed, transporting you through a thousand years of history. Kids could easily spend two hours listening attentively! Walking hand-in-hand across the suspension bridge with your family is a truly special experience! My dad kept taking pictures, saying he wanted to post them in the family group chat so all the relatives would be envious! The Weijiang River flows beneath the bridge, so remember to wear non-slip shoes as it sways a bit! Walking and laughing with my childhood friend, the charcoal-black path against the backdrop of ginkgo leaves was absolutely stunning! When we got tired, we rested in the pavilions, listening to the birdsong and insect chirps – even just daydreaming felt sophisticated. Coming in late autumn, the crunchy sound of falling leaves underfoot was incredibly soothing! The stir-fried beef liver was unbelievably tender! The wok hei (wok aroma) was so intense, it smelled so much better than homemade! The air conditioning was on the whole time, making it cool and comfortable. The owner even asked about our preferences; the Sichuan-style spiciness was truly amazing! The charcoal-grilled skewers, only one yuan each, were incredibly fragrant! The owner is very particular about the ingredients; the sizzling meat skewers were the most comforting. Eating late-night snacks in bamboo chairs, the vibrant, down-to-earth atmosphere was truly captivating!

Passing through the old banyan tree at the head of Huijiang Bridge, the bustling atmosphere instantly transports you back a century. The ancient buildings here aren't cold exhibits in a museum; they're part of the daily lives of the locals—the threshold of the Huang Family Courtyard is worn smooth by countless footsteps, an old man is still weaving a bamboo basket in the Catholic Church square, and freshly washed blue-dyed cloth hangs to dry in the courtyard of the Luo Family Courtyard. Most interestingly, at the Guangdong Guild Hall, a cat named "Snowball" acts like a dedicated greeter, gracefully leaping onto a stone bench and raising its white-gloved paws for petting whenever a visitor arrives. Standing on the banks of the Wenjing River, you can see bamboo rafts used for traditional fishing slowly drifting towards the opposite bank. Every morning, Mr. Chen, in his fifties, rows his ancestral "duckbill boat" to cast his nets. He says this pointed-end wooden boat's design is reminiscent of Ming Dynasty merchant ships. Beneath the stilted houses scattered along the riverbank, women wash rice and vegetables with water from a century-old well; the rhythm of wooden mallets pounding clothes blends with the sound of flowing water, creating a unique symphony of the ancient town. Turning a corner reveals a bygone era. Following the locals' directions, surprises await in the maze-like alleyways. At the foot of the wall in Nüzhong Junzi Alley, an octogenarian practices calligraphy on bluestone slabs with a homemade bamboo pen; the Xia Family Teahouse, hidden deep in the alley, still preserves the art of brewing Sanhua tea in a copper kettle. Most unique is the ruins of an ancient pawnshop; behind the weathered counter hangs a pawn ticket format from the Republic of China era. The shopkeeper's great-granddaughter now runs the teahouse and tells guests the amusing story of her great-grandfather exchanging thirty catties of corn for a jade bracelet. Photography enthusiasts love the Huijiang Bridge at 5:30 in the morning. As the mist rises from the river and the first rays of sunlight pierce through the wooden lattice windows of the century-old bridge, the entire ancient town seems to awaken from a traditional ink painting. If you visit Wang Guoying's former residence at this time, the light and shadow under the carved doorway will tell you why even Yu Qiuyu said that this place holds "the code of time".

From the perspective of a grand family residence, the architecture and treasures here are well-preserved and worth seeing; from a historical research perspective, the artistry and the complexity of the creative background of the rent collection courtyard complex are also worthy of consideration. In short, it has unique elements and is recommended for a visit.

The Sichuan Garden, which is comparable to the Suzhou Garden, is so beautiful! I encountered a quiet and poetic garden in the busy city. The ticket price of 8 yuan made me feel the great value of the little happiness. It seems to be in the water town of Jiangnan, and it is full of natural beauty isolated from the hustle and bustle. (๑˃̵ᴗ˂̵)و✧*。 🌼In the ticket price of 8 yuan, you can encounter the Sichuan Garden, which is comparable to the Suzhou Garden. One step, one view, beautiful. Life is not only about the present, but also about poetry and the distance.

It's worth the money to see the so-called "big landlord's house" 👲 Learning about the Liu family's ancestral business and rise to wealth was no easy feat in those days; accumulating wealth requires hard work. Looking at the stories of one era from the perspective of another makes it impossible to judge. Today's capitalists and some entrepreneurs also have their own struggles and starting stories. Each has its own characteristics and is a product of its historical stage. The manor's design is exquisite and offers valuable architectural historical reference. The three houses require about 3 hours to see, if you're interested. Including the various attractions in the ancient town, walking is the best option.

This is a fantastic museum cluster with over twenty galleries, each with a different theme. The collections are incredibly rich, allowing you to choose a theme that suits your interests. Jianchuan has put a lot of effort into each of the galleries, and I'm truly impressed. The section on veterans of the War of Resistance Against Japan was particularly moving. I sincerely wish his museum continued success, and I hope that we can all bring our children and families to put down our phones and immerse ourselves in the cultural atmosphere of the museum.

The mountain scenery is beautiful and tranquil, steeped in Taoist culture, and features many ancient and towering trees. There is a round-trip cable car, so it's not tiring. You can also take the cable car up the mountain and hike down. I hiked down the mountain myself, taking about three hours to explore and take photos.

The scenery is beautiful, lush, and has a traditional Chinese feel, perfect for taking photos. It's rich in historical and cultural atmosphere, and the humanistic landscapes are well-maintained. This should be further preserved. Could some man-made features be removed, as they are somewhat cluttered? The service is good, but some of the food is quite expensive. Adding more interactive cultural programs would be helpful. The creative cultural products are also beautiful and evocative.
