Horseshoe Bendis a horseshoe-shaped meander of the Colorado River in Arizona, part of Glen Canyon. During ancient times, the Colorado Plateau uplifted, and the old river channel was locked in place, continuously cutting downward and winding around a massive rock to form a nearly 270-degree sharp bend. It is named for its horseshoe shape and is also often called the big bend of the Colorado River. The cliff top at the viewpoint is nearly 300 m above the river surface. Standing at the edge and looking down, the orange-red sandstone cliffs converge in layers, and the river at the bottom of the valley looks like a bright green ribbon swirling along the foot of the cliff. Around noon on sunny days, sunlight can shine directly onto the bottom of the bend. The fully illuminated river water exhibits a gradient of blue and green, and the entire bend lights up, making it a great time for photography. One side of the viewing platform has a railing, while the rest of the cliff edge has no barriers.

The Wave is a sandstone valley known for its wave-like rock formations. The rocks in the valley were formed by the compaction and cementation of massive Jurassic-era sand dunes over long periods. Minerals such as iron and manganese carried by water have stained the rock layers into bands of creamy white, honey yellow, rust red, and deep purple. Wind erosion and intermittent water flow have polished these stripes into layered, swirling, three-dimensional patterns, and some rock layers even bear traces of ancient dinosaurs. Walking into the valley floor, the rock walls on both sides rise and fall like frozen waves, a scene that many photography enthusiasts long to capture. Entering The Wave requires a permit. Once you have a permit, you must complete a round-trip wilderness hike of approx. 10 km. There are no official trails or signs along the entire route, so you must navigate on your own using a map, and there is no water source along the way. The climate is more comfortable in the spring and fall, and when the sun shines into the valley around noon on clear days, the layers and colors of the rock patterns are particularly distinct.
