Since its maiden voyage in 1846, the Maid of the Mist has remained a classic way to experience Niagara Falls. The itinerary begins at the observation tower on the U.S. side, where travelers take an elevator down to the river valley dock. Before boarding, everyone receives a blue poncho, then steps onto the white double-deck cruise. The boat first glides past the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls, where the cascading water creates a misty spray at arm's length. It then ventures into the horseshoe-shaped basin of Horseshoe Falls, surrounded by torrents of water rushing from three sides—thundering and mist-filled.
