Marienplatz

Marienplatz is the central square of Munich's old town. Since the founding of Munich in 1158, it has been the city's main square. The old and new town halls stand on the north and east sides of the square respectively, making it the true "urban living room" of Munich. Below the square is an important hub where suburban trains and subways intersect. Most attractions in the old town are within walking distance from here, and many travelers choose Marienplatz as the starting point for their Munich visit. When FC Bayern Munich wins championships, the team traditionally waves to fans on the square from the town hall balcony. At the center of the square stands the Marian column erected in 1638, featuring a golden statue of the Virgin Mary standing on a crescent moon, holding a scepter in her right hand and cradling the infant Jesus in her left. The base of the column is adorned with bronze statuettes of angels subduing mythical beasts at each corner, now serving as the visual focal point of the square. To the north, the new town hall is a dark-spired Gothic Revival building. Its tower houses a glockenspiel that performs daily at 11 am and noon, with upper puppets reenacting a medieval jousting tournament and lower puppets performing the traditional Bavarian coopers' dance. The show concludes with a golden rooster crowing, and the square is often packed with travelers looking up in anticipation before the performance begins. Opposite the town hall entrance lies the Fischbrunnen, a bronze wishing fountain dating back to the Middle Ages. According to local tradition, people wash their wallets in its waters on Ash Wednesday to invite financial luck. To the east, the old town hall boasts elegant spires, harmonizing with the onion-domed Frauenkirche to the northwest. The south tower of the Frauenkirche offers elevator access to its summit, providing a splendid vantage point to overlook the old town's red-tiled roofs and gaze at the distant Alps. Though the square itself is compact, it encapsulates centuries of Munich's history within its surrounding architecture, remaining vibrant at any time of visit.Munich · 17.5km from Dachau

BMW Welt is the BMW Group's brand exhibition and customer experience center in Munich, combining vehicle displays, new car handovers, conferences, and cultural performances, and it is adjacent to Olympiapark München, the BMW Museum, and the BMW Headquarters. The building itself was designed by the Austrian Blue Sky architecture firm, with a wavy roof covering the entire transparent glass atrium and the iconic double-cone glass tower twisting upward through the roof. The roof is fitted with approx. 8,000 square meters of photovoltaic solar panels, with an output of approx. 810 kW. Inside, the space is divided by brand, with dedicated areas for BMW, MINI, Rolls‑Royce, and BMW Motorrad where new models on sale can be viewed up close; a roughly 100-meter-long exhibition belt runs through the atrium to showcase the BMW brand's current models. The central atrium also serves as the delivery area: customers who book a new car complete the handover here, and the new vehicle is slowly raised from the lower level to the display platform via a circular lift. The venue hosts themed exhibitions and events year-round, and jazz performances have been held here for many years. Opposite the street is the BMW Museum, which tells the story of the century-old brand.Munich · 13.2km from Dachau

Victuals Market

Victuals Market is an open-air market in Munich's Old Town with a history of over 200 years, located right next to Marienplatz. Its name comes from the Latin word for "food". Originally a farmers' market moved from the main square in the early 19th century, it has now evolved into a gourmet market with approx. 140 stalls. Bakeries, cheese stalls, butcher shops, fruit and vegetable stands, flower stalls, and handicraft vendors are arranged in sections, offering seasonal flowers and ingredients from around the world all year round. Many locals frequent the market to buy their daily groceries. In the center of the market stands a blue-and-white striped Maypole, adorned with wooden carvings representing various trades, which is a symbol of Bavarian folklore. The market is also dotted with memorial fountains dedicated to Munich celebrities like comedians Karl Valentin and Liesl Karlstadt. A beer garden is located in the center of the market, where beer is supplied in rotation by 6 major Munich breweries. Freshly shucked oysters at the seafood stalls and freshly squeezed juices at the juice stands are also worth noting.Munich · 17.7km from Dachau

Siegestor is a three-arched, classical-style structure commissioned by King Ludwig I of Bavaria. Modeled after the Arch of Constantine and built from light-colored limestone, it was completed in the mid-19th century and stands approx. 20m high and 24m wide. The bronze sculpture group at the top is a highlight: the goddess "Bavaria" riding a chariot pulled by four lions—the lions are the heraldic symbol of the Wittelsbach dynasty, which ruled the region for centuries. The structure also features multiple layers of reliefs depicting battle scenes and local scenery. Originally built to glorify the army, the structure was severely damaged by air raids during World War II. During post-war reconstruction, it was kept in a simplified form, and the side facing the old town was inscribed with a new dedication: "Dedicated to victory, destroyed by war, reminding of peace," transforming it into a monument that serves as a reminder of peace.Munich · 16.5km from Dachau

New Town Hall stands on the north side of Marienplatz. It is a grand Neo-Gothic building, constructed in phases starting from the second half of the 19th century, and it remains the seat of the city government today. The facade facing the square is adorned with niches and statues, featuring Henry the Lion and successive Bavarian monarchs lined up in sequence. You can take an elevator to the top of the central tower, which is topped by a bronze statue of the Munich Child, the city's symbol. From the top, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the square and the red-tiled roofs of the Old Town. The highlight of this building is the Glockenspiel in the middle of the tower. When the dozens of bronze bells play a melody, life-sized figures appear in turns on two levels: the upper level recreates the jousting tournament from the 1568 wedding of William V, with the knight in Bavarian blue and white colors emerging victorious; the lower level performs the Cooper's Dance, commemorating the story of coopers dancing in the streets to encourage people to return after the plague in 1517, and the performance concludes with three crows from the golden rooster at the top of the tower.Munich · 17.5km from Dachau

English Garden

269 reviews
English Garden was established in the late 18th century. The landscaping follows the English landscape garden style, without symmetrical flower beds or straight avenues, but instead features open lawns, winding paths, groves, and streams that follow the natural terrain, with minimal signs of artificial intervention. The park has many highlights: in the south, there is a five-story wooden Chinese Tower built in imitation of the pagoda at Kew Gardens in London, a Greek-style circular temple offering views of the park, and a permanent artificial standing wave on the river. Surfers take turns here, which has become a signature sight. The park is divided into north and south sections by a main road. The southern part has open lawns, while the northern part is dominated by woods and meadows, and you can sometimes encounter grazing sheep. The artificial lake and several beer gardens in the park are great places to take a break. In summer, traditional garden parties are held under the Chinese Tower, adding a unique cultural atmosphere to the park.Munich · 16.8km from Dachau

University of Munich, the full name of Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich, referred to as "LMU". The university was founded in 1472 and is one of the universities with a long history and rich cultural atmosphere in Germany. In the early 19th century, in honor of the school's founder, Archduke H. Ludwig and later Maximilian I, the school was renamed Ludovico Maximilians, and later this Latin name was changed to German Ludwig-Maximilians- Universität. Like many other institutions in Europe, LMU has no walls or guards, and visitors can come and go as they please. It's very close to the Arc de Triomphe, and Ludwig Street crosses the Scholl Brothers Square, where you can see the campus's iconic fountain. Walking into the white main teaching building, the quiet atmosphere makes people slow down. There are many old buildings on the campus, as well as facilities such as banks, kindergartens, hospitals, etc., which are integrated with the surrounding neighborhoods.Munich · 16.5km from Dachau

Marienplatz is the heart of Munich and one of the city’s most popular attractions. The square is surrounded by beautiful historic buildings, lively cafés, and many shops, creating a vibrant atmosphere. I enjoyed watching the famous Glockenspiel show at the New Town Hall, where the moving figures performed every day. The area was full of street performers and visitors, making it a fun place to walk around. It was also a great place to take photos and explore the nearby streets, restaurants, and local stores. Overall, Marienplatz is a perfect place to experience the history, culture, and energy of Munich. I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting the city.

Its predecessor was a traditional farmers' market, which is where its name comes from. As long as you mention food, you can't go wrong here, so it is the stomach of Munich. In addition to selling food, flowers and other items, it also has the largest beer garden in the city.

The Munich Arc de Triomphe is also a very popular triumphal arch. It is a building built to celebrate victory during the Napoleonic era. The Arc de Triomphe is not very big, but it has a long history. The gate here feels very special.

You haven't truly seen Munich until you've stood in Marienplatz and stared up at the breathtaking New Town Hall . The neo-Gothic architecture is overwhelmingly detailed and beautiful, covered in intricate statues and spires. If you time your visit right, you can watch the famous Glockenspiel clock chimes and mechanical figures dance. The square is always packed with high energy, street performers, and travelers, making it the perfect starting point for exploring the city!

The English Garden is the largest green space in the center of Munich, similar to London's Hyde Park and New York's Central Park. The fountains and some European-style palace styles are rare cultural landscapes in the park. However, because it is close to the river, in addition to the wide lawn, some forest landscapes are also preserved. I envy that the city can have such a large oasis. It is really shocking to see it from the Hilton Hotel.

In other words, such a beautiful church was built privately by two brothers (I just want to say that the two brothers are so rich) and used for private churches. Later, under the strong opposition of the general public, we were forced to open to the public, so that we had the privilege to enjoy such a magnificent and beautiful church.

I went to see the city view for 30 minutes with only 3 euros for the student fee!!! It looks like it's 13 floors high because it says 13 og, but it wasn't as hard to walk up as I thought and I got there quickly I went around sunset and it was so beautiful that I was completely lost in thought! It's very narrow and there's a barbed wire fence, but it doesn't really interfere with taking pictures or viewing, and it's nice that you can enjoy the view from all four sides with different charms.

The Nymphenburg Palace Garden in Germany has a Jiangnan style. After entering, you feel like you are in Jiangnan. But the buildings inside are still very unique and cover a large area. If you come, you can take more than half a day to visit here.
