Engebei Tourist Area is located in Wulan Township, Dalat Banner, Ordos City. Engebei is Mongolian, meaning peace and auspiciousness. Historically, this place was a place with abundant water plants and beautiful scenery. Later, due to wars and excessive grazing, the beautiful grasslands turned into deserts. After more than ten years of unremitting efforts by the local people, a tourist attraction of the Engebei Tourist Area has been built, which integrates the viewing of desert rare birds and animals, desert scenery viewing, agricultural viewing, sand plant viewing, desert exploration and comprehensive services for tourists. The desert scenery is magnificent. At present, five major tourist attractions, more than 20 tourist attractions, and various tourist and entertainment facilities have been formed. Among them, the "Desert River" is 3.5 kilometers long. It is a must in the world to take a speedboat or a boat to the desert with the gentle extension of the sand dunes. In addition, you can also enjoy driving a desert off-road vehicle and experience the joy of riding a hot air balloon to enjoy the desert scenery.Dalad Banner · 48.6km from downtown

Saihantala Urban Grassland is a natural grassland located within the main urban area of Baotou. "Saihantala" means "beautiful grassland" in Mongolian. Over 10,000 mu of grassland sit right next to the city's high-rises, with grass and trees creating a sparse forest and grassland view. Wild animals like hares and wild ducks inhabit the woods and grasslands. You don't need to travel far to experience the vast, boundless grassland atmosphere right on the edge of the city. This scene, where the grassland and high-rises share the same frame, is what distinguishes it from ordinary city parks. The main loop road in the park is approx. 10 km long, suitable for walking, cycling, or touring by electric cart. In the evening, locals often come here for a stroll or jog. Along the way, you can connect highlights like the Aobao Square, the viewing platform, and the Sacred Deer Park: the viewing platform offers a panoramic view of where the grassland meets the city, and the Sacred Deer Park is home to herds of sika deer that you can feed up close. In summer, lavender and verbena bloom in vast fields, with waves of purple flowers spreading across the undulating grassland terrain. Traditional yurts are built in the park, where you can taste Mongolian delicacies like roasted whole lamb, or experience activities such as horseback riding and archery; following the custom of circling the Aobao clockwise 3 times and adding a stone is a popular way for many tourists to check in. If you happen to be there during the annual Aobao Festival, you can witness the lively scene of Mongolian people in traditional costumes gathering on the grassland to hold traditional sacrificial ceremonies.Baotou · 27.2km from Dalad Banner

Baotou Museum is located in the city center of Baotou, close to the railway station. Established in 1998, the museum has an exhibition area of 15,000 m² and is integrated with Baotou Art Museum. The exhibition area is a three-story building, with the art museum on the first floor and the museum on the second and third floors. The overall architecture follows the theme of "culture on the boulders of the grassland," featuring a grand design with profound connotations. From a distance, the building resembles a towering cliff, exuding a unique charm that perfectly reflects the regional characteristics of Baotou. The museum complements the lawns, flowers, trees, and fountains in Friendship Square, creating a magnificent view that blends cultural depth with modern rhythm. The spacious interior is divided into different exhibition zones based on themes, each displaying numerous artifacts related to the evolution and development of Baotou, including many precious relics. Additionally, some exhibits, though not relics, provide excellent displays and interpretations of Mongolian culture, making them equally remarkable.Baotou · 30.8km from Dalad Banner

Yellow River Bridge is a reinforced pontoon bridge located outside the south gate of Baotou. The bridge has weathered many changes, but theYellow Riverwater beneath it continues to surge and flow.BaotouYellow River Bridge is an important bridge connecting the Inner Mongolia Yikezhao League and Baotou City, and is one of the larger bridges on the middle and upper reaches of theYellow River. The bridge is 810 m long, with 12 main spans, each with a span of 65 m. The bridge deck is 12 m wide, the substructure consists of 14 piers, and the superstructure is a prestressed reinforced concrete box girder. Actually, this section of the river is not the widest part of theYellow Riverin Baotou, and the bridge is not particularly grand. However, precisely because it is an attraction that few people pay attention to and receives few visitors, it offers a sense of ease and freedom. Here, you can quietly watch the sunset glow as theYellow Riverflows quietly, shimmering in the light. A few sculling fishing boats are tied to the bank, and under the willow trees, a fisherman's dog sticks out its tongue, curiously eyeing you without barking. While traffic rushes busily across the bridge, life beneath it remains serene and carefree.Baotou · 25.2km from Dalad Banner

Datong Ancient City

4.7/5

Datong Ancient City is the historic core of Datong, Shanxi. It served as the capital Pingcheng during the Northern Wei dynasty, the western auxiliary capital during the Liao and Jin dynasties, and a strategic frontier stronghold in the Ming dynasty, earning it the enduring title "northern key." Over its 2,000-year history spanning dynastic changes, the city's location remained largely unchanged, preserving its chessboard-style street grid centered on Sipailou to this day. The 2008 conservation and restoration project reunited the city walls, reconnected the moat, and gradually revived ancient architecture and old streets, layering the grandeur of an ancient capital with modern life within the same walled city. The ancient town offers an exceptionally dense concentration of noteworthy sights: in Huayan Temple's Liao- and Jin-dynasty halls, the graceful "clasped-hands, smiling" Liao-dynasty bodhisattva statue in the Scripture Depository Hall has long been hailed as the "Oriental Venus"; Shanhua Temple preserves a complete complex of Liao- and Jin-era wooden architecture. The Nine-dragon Wall, originally a glazed screen wall before the Ming-dynasty Dai Prince's residence (destroyed in war), survives with its nine coiling dragons still radiant—older and larger than its counterparts in Beijing's Forbidden City and Beihai Park. Climbing the reconstructed Ming-style city walls reveals a bird's-eye view of the square town's crisscrossing four main streets and orderly rooftops. An evening wait for sunset on the ramparts, followed by the illuminated outlines of walls and watchtowers after dark, makes for one of the town's most enchanting moments. Walking is recommended for touring: the attractions inside the city walls are spaced closely, allowing Huayan Temple, Shanhua Temple, the Nine-dragon Wall, and the drum tower to form a connected route. When tired, you may turn into the area around East Drum Tower Street, where time-honored shops and snack stores are concentrated, making it ideal for resting and replenishing. The ancient town covers a considerable area, so allocate at least half a day and wear comfortable shoes to leisurely appreciate the layered historical depth of this ancient capital.China · Datong

Huitengxile, meaning "cold plateau" in Mongolian. The grassland is located inYinshanNorthern foothills. The grassland is dotted with 99 natural lakes, earning it the nickname "Ninety-nine springs." It combines the vast, majestic style of pastoral grasslands with the bright, delicate hues of southern Chinese water towns. Huitengxile Grassland has cold winters and cool summers, making it a renowned summer retreat since ancient times. The tourist season here runs from May to September, when the land is carpeted with flowers, and it is one of the few highland wetlands in the country. Locals believe the lakes on the grassland mostly formed from underground springs, hence they often refer to lakes as springs. This area was a prehistoric volcanic belt, where eruptions created countless "volcanic craters." Over the years, these craters became overgrown with wild grass and filled with rainwater, forming circular lakes. Legend has it that Genghis Khan, the proud son of heaven, once reined his horse at the "Ninety-nine Springs," admiring the scenic beauty. However, as the springs fell short of a hundred, he reluctantly departed, and thus the Yuan Empire never established its capital here. Legend has it that these 99 lakes never diminish or dry up during droughts,Tianlao LakeThe water neither rises nor overflows, calm as a mirror. The Ninety-nine Springs nourish and moisten like a mother's milk.HuiThe vibrant life of Tengeri. With its green mountains and clear waters, the attraction is divided into two main areas, Shencong Valley and Huanghua Beach, featuring 15 breathtaking views. Here, you can ride horses and camels, practice archery and shooting, watch Mongolian wrestling performances, climb the aobao mountain, visit local herders' homes, taste ethnic dairy products and milk tea, enjoy hand-grabbed mutton, and drink kumis... Through these diverse activities, you can fully experience the rugged and natural Mongolian customs.China · Qahar Right Middle Banner

Datong Ancient City Wall

7
4.3/5
1.6k reviews
The Datong Ancient City Wall was constructed in 1372 during the Ming Dynasty's Hongwu era. This imposing and strategically formidable structure stands as a remarkable example of ancient Chinese military architecture. Its distinctive feature is the crenelated outer perimeter with protruding bastions and trapezoidal formations, creating a unique defensive design. The current wall was expanded by General Xu Da while garrisoning Datong, built upon foundations from the Han, Wei, Tang, Liao, and Yuan dynasties. Spanning 7.24 km in circumference, it encloses an ancient urban area of 3.28 square kilometers. Built with precisely cut stone slabs and rammed earth core faced with blue bricks, the wall measures 14m in height, 12m wide at the top and 18m at the base - 6.6m wider than comparable sections of Nanjing's city walls. The fortification features 62 gate towers, corner towers, and watchtowers, including four main gatehouses. The southern gatehouse is particularly impressive with its three-tiered structure measuring 61m across and 23.35m deep. Four corner towers dominate the wall's angles, with the octagonal northwestern tower (Qian Tower) being most distinctive. Among 54 watchtowers, the Hongzi Tower stands out as a rare architectural element. Additionally, 96 barracks were constructed along the wall. A 10m-wide, 5m-deep moat runs approximately 40m from the wall. Each main gate has an outer barbican (covering 17,600 square meters) and an additional crescent-shaped enclosure, creating three defensive checkpoints for entry. The gates feature arrow towers or two-story plaque towers. The four main gates are named: Heyang (East), Yongtai (South), Qingyuan (West), and Wuding (North). The comprehensive defensive system includes watchtowers, corner towers, gatehouses, and arrow towers spaced at intervals, complemented by drawbridges, barbicans, crescent walls, outer fortresses, and subsidiary walls, forming multiple layers of protection. The Datong Ancient City Wall stands tall and majestic, solid and precipitous, with tight defenses and complete facilities. It is a renowned fortified city with distinctive features in China's ancient military architectural history. Due to its crucial position in northern border defense and its significant role in numerous battles, it has long been honored as the "Imposing Stronghold" and the "Northern Key." A unique feature of the Datong Ancient City Wall is its gear-like outer contour. It has 52 protruding bastions with a trapezoidal structure, measuring approx. 23m at the base, 20m at the top, and covering a top area of 400 square meters. Corner bastion: Slightly taller than the watchtowers, each of the four corner bastions has an additional military control platform (also called observation platform) built outside it. The platform measures approximately 16.6m in width and 15m in length, spaced about 66m from the corner bastion, with a connecting footbridge to the city wall. This unique defensive structure is a distinctive feature of Datong Ancient City Wall.China · Datong

Advantages: The scenery is very good, there is water and sand, the children are very happy, and there are few people and no queues during the May Day holiday. Disadvantages: I bought the package in advance, and I found out that the package price is only 1 yuan lower than the total price of the individual projects. There is no need to buy the package at all. The projects are not very good, such as 80 yuan for camels, less than ten minutes, you must know that Crescent Lake 100 can sit for more than an hour, in contrast, the cost performance is extremely low; after getting on the desert off-road vehicle, the driver said that there is no need to wear seat belts in the back row. I thought it was just a slow drive out, but it turned out to be a whirlwind uphill and downhill in the desert. It is too dangerous not to wear seat belts! Overall, you can come to the desert for sightseeing, and the projects are average. Another thing you need to buy tickets for is the desert entertainment area, and the navigation also guides here. Engebei also has a desert ecological area, free to visit the Desert Science Museum and Camel Park, etc. There are also simulated war vehicles, the price is right, 30 yuan per person, a circle down 20 minutes, the children are very happy

Saihantala Grassland in Baotou. Saihantala (meaning "beautiful grassland" in Mongolian), a national 4A scenic area and Asia's largest original ecological grassland within a city, is located in the main urban area of Baotou. Tens of thousands of acres of grassland are embedded in the city, with high-rise buildings and grassland forming a unified view, earning it the title of Baotou's urban green lung and a city landmark. • Area: Approximately 10,680 acres (712 hectares), with a main ring road about 10 kilometers long. Admission is free, and it is open all day. A visit of 3-4 hours is recommended. • Location: Located within the city, easily accessible by subway and bus, allowing you to experience grassland scenery without long journeys. Must-see attractions: 1. Unique landscape: A blend of pristine sparse forest grassland, four sandy river wetlands, reed marshes, and red willow forests. Free-range cattle, sheep, deer, rabbits, and migratory birds roam the park. Scenes of grazing cattle and sheep are commonplace, and the viewing platform offers panoramic views of the grassland meadows and the city skyline. 2. Feed the deer at the Sacred Deer Park – a family-friendly activity; Walk clockwise around Aobao Mountain three times for blessings, experiencing a strong atmosphere of prayer flags; Cycle around the lake, stroll along the wetland boardwalk, or choose a sightseeing bus; Horse riding, archery, and enjoy authentic Mongolian cuisine like hand-pulled mutton and milk tea in a yurt; Regularly held folk activities include Aobao worship ceremonies and equestrian performances. 3. Important Notes: The park is large, and walking alone takes a long time; most people rent bicycles. There is no mandatory spending. Locals often come for camping, picnics, and leisure exercise. The scenery is distinct in all four seasons, with summer being the best time to visit due to its lush greenery. You can also rent a shared bicycle outside; a 10km ride is very comfortable, and watching the beautiful grassland sunset is quite pleasant and romantic. Both above-ground and underground parking are convenient.

After riding in a Type 59 tank at the northern military base, I took a taxi to the Baotou Museum. I stumbled upon the art gallery on the first floor, admiring many paintings before finally reaching the main museum via a small staircase. The museum lobby was spacious, with three exhibition halls each on the second and third floors, arranged neatly yet compactly. I specifically visited the museum's prized possession, a national first-class cultural relic—a Jingdezhen kiln blue-and-white porcelain jar with a peony scroll design, valued at tens to two hundred million yuan. While the museum may not have a vast collection, there are certainly some exquisite pieces, making it worth the trip.

In mid-October, the Huitengxile Grassland was ablaze with yellow grass, the wind was strong, and tourists were few, lending the landscape a sense of vastness and tranquility. We chartered a car to enter the grassland, our first stop being the Niubaba Scenic Area. Without the hustle and bustle of peak season, the grassland revealed its true nature. Driving along the Windmill Avenue, huge white windmills lined the road, turning slowly in the wind, creating a picturesque scene against the golden grassland. The white yurts stood out against the backdrop of the grassland; the nearby lake was serene, with withered grass swaying on the banks, adding a unique autumnal charm. Along the way, we also saw vast golden pine forests, sunlight filtering through the branches and casting dappled shadows; herds of cattle and sheep grazed peacefully. Though the wind was strong, it couldn't dispel the vastness and serenity. Late autumn in Huitengxile, while lacking the lush green of summer, offered a truly pure grassland experience with its golden hues, open spaces, and free-flowing winds.
