▲ Heidelberg Castle is situated on Königstuhl hill, constructed from red sandstone. Though in ruins, it retains its former grandeur. The castle was originally built in the 13th century but suffered damage during the Thirty Years' War and the War of the Palatine Succession. Restoration efforts are ongoing, with the scars of war still clearly visible.

▲ Behind the Grain Square south of the Market Square, you'll find the cable car station to the castle. You can take the cable car up to the castle hilltop or choose to hike up via the stone steps from Grain Square (approx. 15 min), enjoying the scenic views along the way.

▲ Before entering the atrium, take a moment to notice the circular handle on the city gate, which bears a distinct crack. Legend has it that the castle's owner once promised to give the castle to anyone who could bite through the iron ring handle. A witch eagerly attempted the feat, and though she failed, her teeth marks remain.
