Strait of Magellan
The Strait of Magellan is a natural waterway between the southern tip of the South American continent and islands such as Tierra del Fuego. Located in southern Chile, it winds for over 500 km, connecting the South Atlantic and South Pacific Oceans. In 1520, the navigator Magellan led his fleet on a circumnavigation through this winding fjord into the Pacific Ocean, and it was named after him. Before the Panama Canal opened, this was an important route for ships traveling between the two oceans to avoid the massive waves of Cape Horn. Compared to the storm-prone Drake Passage, the water here is relatively calm. The mountains and islands along the shores are continuous, and the high-altitude ridges are covered in snow year-round. The barren mountains, rocks, and dark seawater interweave to create a desolate, Patagonian-style landscape that feels a bit like the end of the world.Chile · Curico

This is a great little museum that shows the house itself on one hand and the original inhabitants and the history of the town on the other, as well as the creation and production of the Noruega, Braun and Menendez and the sheep empire. The house was built by this clan that combined the 3 richest families in the area through intermarriage. The house was built with European materials so a fortune must have been paid for it. The house is not that big. It is in a good state of restoration, has a beautiful stained glass ceiling and some lavishly decorated rooms. Part of the cellar or servants quarters is also open. Another section gives a good overview of the founding of Punta Arenas as a convict colony. It also gives a good overview on a touch screen of the 5 tribes that originally lived in the area as well as the nearby Tuera de Fuego. On display are some artifacts left behind by these tribes that were almost completely annihilated on the Chilean side (and almost completely wiped out on the Argentinian side). There is currently a nice garden and they are renovating part of the exterior of the mansion.
