Summer Palace (Iwaen)Registered as a World Heritage Site (Cultural Heritage) in 1998.It had been used as an "Imperial Garden" since the Ming Dynasty, but in 1750, Emperor Qianlong, the sixth emperor of the Qing Dynasty, converted it into a villa to celebrate his mother's 60th birthday, and it was renamed Qingli Garden.Later, in 1860 (10th year of Xianfung), it was destroyed by British and French troops during the Second Opium War.From 1884, it was renovated to become the Empress Dowager Cixi's retirement residence and was renamed the Summer Palace.
