Longmen Grottoes Longmen Grottoes is one of the treasure houses of Chinese stone carving art, a world cultural heritage, a national key cultural relic protection unit, and a national AAAAA-level tourist attraction. It is located on Longmen Mountain and Xiangshan Mountain on both sides of the Yi River in the southern suburbs of Luoyang City. Longmen Grottoes, Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes, and Yungang Grottoes are known as the three major grottoes in China.The Longmen Grottoes were excavated during the reign of Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei Dynasty. After that, they were continuously built on a large scale for more than 400 years during the Eastern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Qi, Sui, Tang, Five Dynasties, and Song Dynasties. It stretches 1 kilometer from north to south. Today, there are 2,345 caves and niches, more than 100,000 statues, and more than 2,800 inscriptions. Among them, the "Twenty Pieces of Longmen" are the essence of Wei stele calligraphy, and the "Yique Buddha Shrine Stele" written by Chu Suiliang is a model of the regular script art of the early Tang Dynasty. The Longmen Grottoes have a long history and span many dynasties. With a large number of physical images and text materials, they reflect the development and changes in many fields of ancient China, such as politics, economy, religion, and culture, from different perspectives, and have made significant contributions to the innovation and development of Chinese grotto art.
