Waitomo Glowworm Caves
Millions of years ago, the entire Waitomo region was submerged beneath the ocean. Over time, nature's craftsmanship created spectacular underground caves, where thousands of unique glowworms shimmer in the darkness like an underground galaxy.
The glowworms in the caves are the larvae of a unique New Zealand species of dipteran insect: Arachnocampa luminosa. They lure prey with their striking bioluminescence and capture them using sticky silk threads. Thousands of these tiny glowworms twinkle like stars, creating a dreamlike world of light and shadow.
Stalactites and stalagmites will lose their luster and have their structure damaged if touched. Please cherish them and refrain from touching them with your hands.
Cruise Segment
This is the true highlight of the itinerary, requiring a small boat ride along the stream to explore deep inside the cave.
Once seated securely on the boat, staff will pull the overhead guide ropes to propel the vessel forward, creating the sensation of sailing through the Milky Way! Glide along the dark underground river and marvel at the glowing fireflies twinkling everywhere, their radiant display resembling a breathtaking galactic spectacle!
