Product reviews: Zaanse Schans Windmills, Clogs and Dutch Cheese Small-Group Tour from Amsterdam
Guest User2025-08-17
Zaanse Schans was built about 50 years ago by moving authentic houses & buildings from the 1700s to create this working bit of history. It’s a bit like Holland’s version of colonial Williamsburg—lousy with tourists who aren’t very polite.
I strongly encourage booking the very earliest possible tour, so crowds are only nuts for the later part of the tour.
That being said, it’s a lively, lovely little village of working windmills and little green cottages and shops, and it’s very picturesque. To see life in “old Holland,” it was educational and also a bit of a tourist trap.
Our tour guide was kind and delightful—she shared history on the bus, gave us free time to mill around, and I did not feel rushed as some other reviews mentioned. I thought she was wonderful!
The excursion may not be something I’d do again, simply because it’s a lot of children and pushy tourists. The residents of the village were welcoming and delightful. Food choices were all crowded, so I wouldn’t go expecting to have time to sit in a cafe and eat, but it wasn’t a priority for me. I could foresee hungry kids screaming at having to pass up long lines for treats. Cheese samples are available at the creamery, but many people are rude about standing at samples and taking their fill. (As an American, this felt very “American tourist.”)
I thought the tour was a great way to get some history of windmills, to see wooden windmills at work, and to take lots of photos of historical cottages. Sheep, goats, cheese, wooden shoes, diamonds, souvenir shops, and some street vendors on special occasions. Street vendors, IMHO, sell a lot of stuff that isn’t actually made in Zaanse Schans, but import souvenir stuff. Most souvenirs are the same from shop to shop, though the diamond store has sterling silver (not plate) charms and earrings.
The bus was comfortable and the whole walk through town was organized and interesting.
