Reviews: Northern Armenia from Tbilisi: UNESCO Monasteries & Soviet MiG Jet Day Tour
Guest User2026-02-21
The original plan was to rent a car in Georgia, drive to Armenia, and then return. However, we discovered that the car insurance was invalid in Armenia, so we promptly cancelled the rental. We found a one-day car rental tour of northern Armenia on Ctrip. I initially wanted Ctrip customer service to help us contact the company to take us to Yerevan, but they told me to contact them myself. In the end, I contacted the company via WeChat and agreed to add an extra fee for two days of car rental. At 9:00 AM, our enthusiastic driver and guide, Guram, picked us up in his Hyundai minivan. Crossing the border from Georgia to Armenia is very slow; insurance and accommodation must be booked in advance, and all luggage must be removed from the vehicle for security checks. Hiring a car or using public transportation is much more convenient. On the first day, we visited three monasteries. Sanahim Monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an ancient medieval school. However, what impressed me most was the Mikoyan Museum. It features a Mikoyan-designed Soviet MiG-21 aircraft and displays many precious artifacts and pictures, including a photo of Chairman Mao meeting Mikoyan's brother. Guram explained that Mikoyan's family was poor in the area, and his parents were uneducated, but they still managed to send them to good schools, ultimately raising two outstanding sons. Mikoyan's elder brother became a high-ranking official in the former Soviet Union, serving three generations of leaders. We passed Lake Sevan, a high-altitude lake at about 2,000 meters, surrounded by snow-capped mountains. Guram took us to a lakeside restaurant for grilled fish. Five dishes, drinks, and white wine cost only a little over 260 RMB, about a third of the price in Tbilisi. We arrived at our hotel in Yerevan around 5:30 pm and immediately went to the Yerevan Steps for photos. In the evening, we saw a ballet performance. The next day, Guram drove us to the Deep Pit Monastery near the Turkish border; the snow-capped mountains there were even more beautiful. On the return trip, we took a route not found on Google Maps, with even more beautiful scenery and less traffic. Guram took us to a beautiful, delicious, and affordable restaurant that couldn't be found on Dianping (a Chinese review platform). I strongly recommend that the business add a two-day tour to the original itinerary, including Lake Sevan and the Deep Pit Monastery, which would make for a perfect Armenian trip.

Today we went on a short tour of Mtskheta. It was a magical experience!!! We loved everything: the sacred ancient sites, the majestic churches, the wonderful transfer, and the professional driver. Our guide, Levon, left a strong impression with a pleasant aftertaste: knowledgeable, attentive, full of calm dignity and intelligence. Thank you so much for the tour! We recommend it to everyone.
