CA-1 is a highly iconic coastal self-drive route on the West Coast of the United States, stretching over 1,000 km along the Pacific coastline and connecting coastal towns from the San Francisco Bay Area, Monterey, Big Sur, San Simeon, and Morro Bay all the way to Los Angeles. Its highlight is concentrated in the Big Sur section between Monterey, Carmel-by-the-Sea, and San Simeon: the road winds along steep cliffs, with the surging Pacific Ocean on one side and mountains and redwood forests on the other. There are many scenic parking areas along the way where you can pull over at any time to enjoy the sea breeze and watch the waves crash against the cliffs. There are several highly recognizable scenes along this section: the Bixby Bridge, which spans the canyon, is an elegantly designed concrete arch bridge, and there are almost always vehicles parked at the bridgehead for photos; McWay Falls in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park drops directly from the cliff top onto the beach in the cove, making it a rare beach waterfall in California; the sand at Pfeiffer Beach has a faint purple hue due to the weathering of manganese garnet in the cliffs; further south in the San Simeon area, groups of northern elephant seals can be seen sunbathing on the beach year-round, and you can also visit Hearst Castle on the mountain nearby. The Old Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey at the northern end and the town of Carmel-By-The-Sea also have their own unique charm.Monterey County · 42.9km from Felton

Golden Gate Park is a large urban green space in San Francisco, covering approx. 1,017 acres and stretching approx. 4.8 km from east to west, spanning the Richmond District and Sunset District in the western part of San Francisco. This land was originally barren coastal sand dunes, and has been gradually transformed into the lush, large park it is today through continuous tree planting and sand stabilization efforts since the 1870s. The park features a rich variety of landscapes, where cultural facilities and natural scenery intertwine. The eastern section is home to cultural institutions such as the California Academy of Sciences, the de Young Museum, and the Japanese Tea Garden, while the northern section features historic buildings like the Conservatory of Flowers. The park's natural and recreational areas are equally diverse. Stow Lake surrounds Strawberry Hill at the center, where pedal boats can be rented. In the western part of the park stand two historic windmills, the Dutch Windmill and the Murphy Windmill, with tulip gardens nearby. The Bison Paddock has been in the park since the late 19th century, and you can still see the herd of bison roaming within the enclosure today. Spreckels Lake is a gathering place for model sailboat enthusiasts, with exquisite miniature sailboats often sailing on the water. The park also features a disc golf course, a lawn bowling club, and a skate park, with cycling trails running throughout the entire park.San Francisco · 87.6km from Felton

The San Jose Municipal Rose Garden is located on Naglee Avenue in downtown San Jose, California, USA. It covers an area of about 5.5 acres. It is a public garden open to the public free of charge and is also one of the most popular leisure resorts in the city. Strolling through it, the winding paths lead visitors to various flower beds, lawns and central fountains. From late spring to early summer, the fragrant roses bloom in a colorful and spectacular way. The garden was founded in 1927. It was formerly a plum orchard. After several expansions and renovations, it is now dedicated to the cultivation and display of rose varieties. There are more than 3,500 roses planted in the garden, covering nearly 190 varieties, from classical old roses to modern hybrid new products, which are both ornamental and of scientific significance. In addition to the rich plant display, the rose garden also has two reservable wedding ceremony venues, which attract newlyweds to hold romantic weddings all year round. In the early morning and evening, this place is even more peaceful and is an ideal place for a picnic or photography.San Jose · 33.7km from Felton

Palace of Fine Artsis located in the Marina District in the northern part of San Francisco, United States, and is a well-preserved historic building that attracts many visitors. The building was designed by American architect Bernard Maybeck, who drew inspiration from ancient Roman and Greek architecture, shaping the palace into an ancient ruin that seems to have weathered the passage of time. The towering dome, solemn colonnades, and a design style with a touch of imperfection give the entire structure a tranquil and poetic sense of age beyond its grandeur. Approaching the building, you can see the towering dome and elegant curved colonnades surrounding the lake, which, together with the surrounding open water, form a tranquil, scenic view. This palace is not just a historic building, but a public space that blends architectural aesthetics, natural scenery, and cultural memory.San Francisco · 89.9km from Felton

Carmel-By-The-Sea is a coastal, artistic town on the Monterey Peninsula and a popular stopover on the Highway 1 self-drive route. Many travelers connect it with the17 Mile Dras they head south. The town's character dates back to the early 20th century. After the San Francisco earthquake, a group of poets, painters, and writers moved here, gradually developing it into an art-centric seaside community. To this day, the town is still dotted with independently owned galleries, craft shops, and bookstores. Architecture is another hallmark of the town: the fairy-tale cottage style, pioneered by architect Hugh Comstock in the 1920s, endures to this day. Pointed roofs, shingled walls, and whimsical chimneys can be found throughout the streets, with the Hansel and Gretel cottages, named after the Brothers Grimm fairy tale "Hansel and Gretel," being particularly famous. The town has no street numbers, no neon signs, and chain brands are hard to find, making a stroll through it feel like being in the European countryside. Visits usually center around Ocean Avenue, where galleries and boutiques are tucked away in the alleys on both sides of the main street. At the end of the street lies Carmel Beach, where fine, soft white sand and the silhouettes of coastal pine trees make it a great place to watch the sunset. Self-drive travelers can also take a scenic drive along Scenic Road, with the Pacific Ocean on one side and unique coastal cottages on the other.Carmel-by-the-Sea · 56.8km from Felton

Silicon Valley doesn't really feel like a tourist attraction. I stood in front of Apple's giant ring for a while; the security guard was polite but wouldn't let me in. Google's colorful bicycles were there, but passersby were too busy looking at their phones. In the roadside cafes, people were frowning so deeply at their computers they could trap a mosquito. Driving around, all you see are low-rise office buildings, much like a typical industrial area. But sitting on a park bench near Stanford, watching kids fly kites, was much more comfortable than any of those tech parks.

This is a relatively large park near the Golden Gate Bridge, called Golden Gate Park. Most tourists will not go to this attraction specifically, but since we are traveling independently, we can visit it in a more relaxed manner. The environment design of this park is unparalleled and it is worth checking out.

The colorful Google headquarters is located in Mountain View. An old classmate who works at Google enthusiastically took us inside to visit and introduced us. In the beautiful environment surrounded by bright sunshine and green trees, Google employees can be seen sitting on the ground at work, discussing problems in groups of three or two, or operating computers alone. It is rare to be able to engage in high-tech creative work in such a relaxing and comfortable environment!
