Atomic Bomb Dome

The Atomic Bomb Dome, also known as the Hiroshima Peace Monument, was originally the Hiroshima Prefecture Industrial Award Hall, located on the banks of the Yuanyasu River in the center of Hiroshima. On August 6, 1945, the U.S. bombed Hiroshima with an atomic bomb, and almost all the buildings near the center of the explosion were razed to the ground. Today the ruins of the building are preserved as a memorial to the event and are listed on the World Heritage List. Family members of atomic bomb radiation victims are often encountered near the dome, and they will enthusiastically tell foreign tourists the story of the atomic bombing and their families in English. It is also a place frequently visited by local elementary and middle school students, and every year, peace groups from all walks of life in Japan hold commemorative activities here. The Hiroshima City Government built a Peace Park around the atomic bomb dome. In addition to numerous statues and monuments, the park also has a Peace Memorial Museum, which displays clothing, glasses, hair and other items that have experienced the atomic bomb. It is worth visiting one time. Every year on August 6th, the locals will hold a river lantern event on Yuanan River, and put various lanterns with eulogy and prayers into the river.Hiroshima City · 1.2km from downtown

The park is lush with greenery, cherry blossoms in spring, and two rivers flow around the park, a stark contrast to the severe trauma caused by the atomic bombing of World War II. In the park, there are monuments to the victims of the atomic bombing, Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, etc. The Peace Memorial Ceremony is also held on August 6 every year.Hiroshima City · 879m from downtown

Hiroshima Castle is located on the flat ground of the delta of the Ota River. Because it looks like a black carp, it is also known as "Carp Castle". It was built by the famous general Mori Terumoto in 1589, and it took 10 years to complete. This beautiful castle was completely destroyed in the atomic bombing of 1945. The current castle was rebuilt in 1958 in the same way as it was, standing on the top of the city overlooking the surrounding city. In addition to exhibiting historical arts and crafts, Hiroshima Castle is also a famous cherry blossom viewing spot, attracting many cherry blossom viewing tourists every spring.Hiroshima City · 2km from downtown

It was built by the former lord of Hiroshima. It is a typical Edo period architectural style. It is said that it is also modeled on the architecture of the West Lake in China. "Shijing Garden". The Zhuoying Pond in the center of the garden is dotted with small islands of different sizes. The valleys, bridges, and pavilions are ingeniously arranged. It is very interesting to cruise through it, so it is also called a parade garden. Flowers bloom in the garden all year round, so you can experience the charm of the garden any time you come. In 1940, Shukkei Garden was designated as a national scenic spot. Due to the atomic bomb explosion, it was in a state of complete damage. Today, Qingfeng Pavilion and Mingyue Pavilion have been restored.Hiroshima City · 2km from downtown

Miyajima, also called Itsukushima, is located in the southwest of Hiroshima Prefecture, and is listed as one of the "Three Views of Japan" along with Matsushima in Miyagi Prefecture and Amanohashidate in Kyoto Prefecture. There are world cultural heritage sites such as Itsukushima Shrine, Mishan, and many historic shrines and temples. When you come to Miyajima, you can see the Itsukushima Shrine built by the sea and the large vermilion torii that stands in the sea. This is a famous landscape of Miyajima. The elegant shrine of vermilion lacquer in the shrine combines with the blue of the sea in front of it and the emerald green of the virgin forest of Misan in the background, making people feel the beauty and splendor of the Heian period. In the sea about 200 meters in front of the shrine, there is a large red torii gate with a height of 16.6 meters, which is very eye-catching. In addition to Itsukushima Shrine, Miyajima has many other temples worth visiting. To the west of Itsukushima Shrine is the Daiganji Temple, which is famous for housing Japan's three major Bensaiten (one of the seven gods of good fortune). On the hill to the left (northeast) of the entrance to Itsukushima Shrine, there are five-storied pagodas that combine Japanese and Chinese styles, and Senjokaku, which is said to have a thousand tatami in the main hall. About 10 minutes southwest from Itsukushima Shrine, there is a Daisho-in Temple, where you can see many Buddhist halls, mandalas and Buddha statues. Misan is the main peak of Miyajima. There are many rare plants that can only be seen in Miyajima growing in the virgin forest on the mountain. It is also a good place to get close to nature. It is wonderful to take the aerial cable car to climb the mountain and see the magnificent scenery of Miyajima from mid-air; hiking from the foot of the mountain is also unique, and you will encounter many cute deer along the way. Next to the end of the ropeway is the Shishi Rock Observatory, from which you can enjoy the beautiful Seto Inland Sea. Continue to walk to the top of the mountain, and the 360-degree viewing angle is even more fascinating. On a clear day, you can see the peaks of Shikoku in the distance. In addition, there are many shrines, Buddhist pavilions and other historical sites that can be visited on the top of Misan Mountain.Hatsukaichi · 18.6km from Hiroshima City

Looking for a powerful, beautiful spot in Japan? Hiroshima City is home to the Peace Memorial Park, and I visited just as cherry blossoms exploded into color throughout the city 🌸Location: Nakajimacho, Naka Ward, Hiroshima, 730-0811, Japan Hours: Open 24/7, year-round (especially magical in cherry blossom season!) What makes it special: This park isn’t just a green space, but a living memory of hope and peace. You’ll see the iconic A-Bomb Dome, beautiful modern architecture, and moving memorials alongside the rivers. The vibe is respectful, serene, and breathtaking—especially when the cherry blossoms are out during spring.Getting around: Hiroshima’s streetcar system makes it super easy to reach the park from anywhere in the city—look for the green line towards Hondori and get off at Genbaku Dome-mae. No need to worry about timing, since the park is open all day. What’s more, if you’re traveling with a group you can hire VR headsets to use at the park!

The big five-story tower (the Keep) is actually a museum. It's all about samurai history and how the city was run way back when. The exhibits are easy to follow and they’ve got some legit-looking old armor and swords. The Absolute Best Bit: Hands-On Fun!My favorite part is the interactive floor on the way up! This is where you can live out your samurai dreams. You can try on a crazy helmet or a piece of armor, but the real highlight is getting to lift a replica katana! It's surprisingly heavy, and it gives you a whole new respect for the samurai. Great picture moment, too!And once you get to the top, the views are amazing. You get a perfect look at the modern city a beautiful mix of the old history below and the new skyline all around. Totally worth the small entrance fee!

On the first floor, there is an experience corner with merchandise sales and slides. The cranes that have been collected since the museum opened are piled up, and it looks fantastic from the outside. There is also a tram running right in front of you. You can also lie down and relax at the Hiroshima Hill booth.

Itsukushima Shrine enshrines the Munakata Three Goddesses, who protect the sea. The torii gate is built in the sea to integrate the shrine with the ocean, symbolizing the "boundary between the realm of the gods and the human world." The submerged state of the gate under the seawater emphasizes reverence for the sea goddess, aligning with the original intention of worshipping ocean deities. There is also a statue of Lanling Wang in the harbor; the previous occupant of the island had some connection with Lanling Wang.

When I was on a business trip to Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, I took a train to near Miyajima and then took a ferry across. For lunch, I had the local specialty conger eel rice and a beer, then strolled over to the aquarium. As the sun gradually sank, I spent some time relaxing watching the sunset and the torii gates. On the way home, I had a few fried oysters and a beer, and it was a rare experience to watch the sun slowly sink.
