The British Consulate at Takow

5.6
4.6/5
937 reviews
The British Consulate at Takow is located on the picturesque Sizihwan Bay with its seamless blend of sea and sky. The name "Takow" originated from the Chinese pronunciation of the indigenous term for bamboo groves, which were abundant in Kaohsiung. Later, the Japanese deemed the name "Takow" inelegant and changed it to "Kaohsiung," pronounced as "taka-o" in Japanese, which closely resembles the original name. The British Consulate at Takow is perched on the picturesque Sizihwan Bay, divided into two sections: the hilltop residence and the consulate building below. The hilltop residence showcases post-Renaissance Baroque architecture, distinguished by its red-brick facade, bamboo-shaped downspouts, stone carvings, and arched designs. The first floor features a cultural gift shop, an observation deck, and a courtyard. From the observation deck, visitors can enjoy uninterrupted views of the sunset. The second floor houses an exhibition room, where models, historical maps, and multimedia displays intertwine to immerse visitors in Kaohsiung's rich 100-year port history. Visit the consulate residence in the afternoon to early evening and savor the sunset moments by West Lake.Kaohsiung · 4.5km from downtown

Lotus Pond

Lotus Pond, formerly known as Lotus Flower Pond, is located south of Banping Mountain and north of Turtle Mountain in Kaohsiung City. The pond is 1.4 kilometers long and got its name from the lotus flowers that filled the pond during the Qing Dynasty, filling the air with their fragrance in summer. Lotus Pond Scenic Area The west bank of Lotus Pond is dotted with temples; within a 500-meter radius, there are over 20 temples, including the Kaohsiung Confucius Temple, Chunqiu Pavilion, Qiming Hall, Wuliting Pavilion, and Dragon and Tiger Pagodas, from north to south. Long bridges, art pavilions, and pagodas, with their vibrant colors, add to the lively atmosphere of Lotus Pond, forming a famous temple and tourist area in Zuoying District. The west bank is also the old town of Zuoying, very bustling. Meanwhile, the east bank of Lotus Pond features a wide lakeside road, while the south bank is connected by Shengli Road and Xinzhuangzai Road, forming a complete lakeside road. At dawn and dusk, Lotus Pond is shrouded in mist, the scenery along the shore appearing and disappearing in the shadows, creating an indescribable sense of mystery. Especially during the lush summer months, the pond is brimming with water, shimmering in the sunlight. The weeping willows along the shore sway in the breeze, and the duckweed and water lilies drift on the surface, creating a scene as beautiful as being in West Lake. To explore all the attractions around Lotus Pond, it might take half a day to a full day. For most tourists, it mainly involves visiting a few important temples on the west bank. The attractions are relatively concentrated, and walking isn't too tiring. Dragon and Tiger Pagodas These seven-story pagodas stand as twin pavilions, one representing a dragon and the other a tiger, on the pond. Each pavilion has dragon and tiger statues in front, and visitors can enter through the dragon's mouth and exit through the tiger's mouth, symbolizing good fortune. The dragon pagoda features illustrations of the Twenty-Four Filial Exemplars of Chinese folklore, while the tiger pagoda depicts the Twelve Worthies. A winding bridge connects the pagodas to the shore, creating a majestic and beautiful scene that mirrors the pond's surface. The dragon and tiger mouths are popular photo spots. Chunqiu Pavilion Continuing forward from the Dragon and Tiger Pagoda, you'll find the Chunqiu Pavilion and Qiming Hall. The Chunqiu Pavilion is a combination of two Chinese palace-style pavilions, the Spring Pavilion and the Autumn Pavilion. Each is a four-story, octagonal structure with green tiles and yellow walls, resembling a pagoda, its ancient reflection shimmering in the water. Connected by a winding bridge, they are also known as the "Spring and Autumn Imperial Pavilions," built to commemorate the Martial Saint Guan Yu. At the front of the Chunqiu Pavilion is a statue of Guanyin riding a dragon. Local legend says that Guanyin Bodhisattva appeared riding a dragon in the clouds, instructing believers to build a statue in the form of her appearance between the Spring and Autumn Pavilions, hence the current statue of Guanyin riding a dragon. In front of the statue is a small pond containing hundreds of turtles of various shapes and sizes; some might mistake it for a sculpture. Next to the Chunqiu Pavilion is Qiming Hall, also known as the Southeast Emperor's Grand Hall, a magnificent temple on the banks of Lotus Pond. In the middle of the winding bridge connecting the Spring and Autumn Pavilions, another long bridge extends into the pool, ending at the three-story pavilion known as the Five Mile Pavilion. From the pavilion, one can take a panoramic view of the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas opposite. Confucius Temple Continuing north along the path by the pool, you'll find the Confucius Temple, a magnificent building in the style of a northern palace. Its interior includes the Dacheng Hall, Dacheng Gate, east and west wings, Chongsheng Shrine, Lingxing Gate, Li Gate and Yilu Archway, Minglun Hall and Pan Palace Archway, the towering palace wall, the Pan Pool, and an arched bridge, among other complete structures. Here, you can pray for your child's academic success.Kaohsiung · 4.7km from downtown

The "Dome of Light" took nearly 4 years to complete. This public artwork with a diameter of 30 meters and a dome area of 660 square meters was commissioned by German craftsmen to make it according to the narcissist. Great amusement to spend the day. Not too big, and most people usually go to the food court in the mall to eat, so thankfully re-entry is allowed via stamp.Saturday I think the park closes a little later then the weekdays, so there was also another show that was played outside.I can imagine during peak times this place will be packed, so enjoy it before it gets to that point.Best place would be more for couples or families.

Perfect, Serene Experience for Families and Seniors! This tour is incredibly elderly-friendly. I traveled with my mother, and she felt very comfortable throughout the trip. The service was homely, and the boat itself has plenty of seating with a stable, smooth ride. A huge highlight was the atmosphere—there was no loud, blasting music, making it a very serene way to enjoy the river. Our guide was very informative, sharing the interesting history of the Love River as we passed landmarks like the illuminated Kaohsiung Music Center and the Great Harbor Bridge.Tip: If you are a couple looking for a private, romantic vibe, the gondolas might be better. But for families or those traveling with parents, the Love Boat is the perfect choice for a relaxing, educational tour
