Old Town was founded in the 7th century and is situated on a limestone peninsula on the Adriatic coast, known as the "Pearl of the Adriatic." The old town is surrounded by well-preserved medieval walls. Walking along the walls offers panoramic views of the stretching red-tiled roofs, monastery bell towers, and the azure waters of the Adriatic Sea. Walking the walls is an unmissable experience when visiting this ancient city. Entering from the Pile Gate on the west side, you are greeted by the Stradun, the main street that runs through the old town, lined with buildings showcasing a variety of architectural styles, including Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque. The Minceta Fortress at the northwest corner of the walls is the highest point, offering views of the entire old town and the distant sea. Outside the walls, the Lovrijenac Fortress stands on a seaside rock and is another great spot for overlooking the panoramic view of the old town. Known as a "city museum," this old town is also the main filming location for "King's Landing" in the TV series "Game of Thrones," and you will often encounter familiar scenes while strolling through it.

Throughout the long years, it has never been breached by enemy forces, safeguarding the city's peace and prosperity for centuries. Walking the full circuit along the wall-top path is a classic way to experience this site: the Minčeta Tower at the northern end stands as the highest point of the entire line, offering panoramic views of the old city's layered red-tiled roofs and the Adriatic Sea in the distance; the circular Bokar Fortress on the west side protrudes from the wall and hangs over the sea, guarding the Pile Gate; while St. John's Fortress at the southeastern end guards the entrance to the old port. The old city and the walls are also one of the filming locations for King's Landing in the series Game of Thrones. Looking out from the walls at the red tiles and blue sea, you will understand why this ancient seaside city attracts visitors all year round.

Fort Lovrijenac, also known as St. Lawrence Fortress, stands on a cliff over 30 m above the sea, outside the western gate of the old city of Dubrovnik, and is called "Dubrovnik's Gibraltar" due to its strategic location. Legend has it that in the 11th century, the Venetians planned to build a fortress on the cliff top to control the city, but local residents preemptively built their own fortress in just three months, forcing the Venetian ships, which arrived fully loaded with building materials, to turn back. The fortress is triangular in plan and divided into three levels of platforms. The wall facing the sea is over 10 m thick, while the side facing the old city is only a few dozen cm thick—this difference in thickness was a deliberate design by the former Republic of Ragusa: in the event that the fortress commander defected, the artillery from within the city could easily suppress it. Above the gate is a Latin inscription that means "Freedom cannot be sold for all the treasures in the world," which is the city's motto that has been passed down for centuries. Today, the interior of the fortress has been converted into an open-air theater, and the Shakespeare play "Hamlet" performed here has become a signature production of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival; it was also a filming location for the "Red Keep" in King's Landing in the American TV series "Game of Thrones." Standing on the seaside platform and looking out over the railing, you can take in the old city's red-tiled roofs, the winding city walls, and the shimmering Adriatic Sea.

Dubrovnik Cable Car is located just outside the Old Town walls and can be reached in a few minutes on foot. The lower station is the starting point for the ascent to the summit of Mount Srd. The cable car opened in 1969, was damaged during the war, and resumed operations in 2010 after being rebuilt along the original route. The cable car line is approximately 780m long, and it takes just a few minutes to ascend from the lower station to the summit at an altitude of over 400m; as the cabin climbs, the orange rooftops of the Old Town, the outline of the city walls, and the Adriatic Sea gradually unfold below. The summit features a viewing platform where, on a clear day, you can enjoy a 360-degree view of the entire Old Town of Dubrovnik, with the nearby Island of Lokrum, the distant Elafiti Islands, and the deep blue sea all coming into view. The platform is home to Fortress Imperial, built during the Napoleonic era, which houses the Homeland War Museum where you can learn about the city's modern history; the panoramic restaurant is right next to the station, making it a perfect spot to order a drink and enjoy the view. At sunset, golden light bathes the Old Town and the sea, a sight for which many visitors make the trip up the mountain; hikers can also choose to walk up or down along the mountain trail.

Walking around Dubrovnik's city walls takes about two hours. The undulating stone steps gleam pale yellow in the sunlight. Looking down at the Adriatic Sea from a high vantage point, the water is a brilliant blue, and the red-tiled roofs of the old town spread out densely, as if huddled together for warmth. The fortifications on the walls retain traces of their past, and occasionally seagulls can be seen perched on the crenellations. The world outside and inside the walls is two separate realms: outside are yachts and cruise ships, inside are cobblestone alleys and sheets drying in the sun. If you get tired, you can sit for a while in the shade of one of the towers, the wind carrying the scent of salt.

Rovellijenak Fortress 🏰 This "jelly sea" is so beautiful it's almost unreal 🥹💙 No wonder Game of Thrones chose this location for King's Landing's "Red Keep"! This fortress is built on a 37-meter-high cliff, and to prevent Venetian invasion, the locals completed it in just 3 months!

The cable car station is located at the foot of the mountain outside the north gate of the old city. There is a huge cross on the top of the mountain, which was originally given to Dubrovnik by Napoleon. It was later destroyed in the war. What stands there now is a replica.

The Pile Gate is the main entrance to the old city. Whether it is a group of tourists or backpackers, they all take this as the first stop in the old city. Take bus 1A or 1B at the entrance of Dubu Bus Station and arrive here in 20 minutes.
