Munich Residence

The Munich Residence is located in the heart of Munich's old town, serving as the residence and power center for the dukes, electors, and kings of the Wittelsbach family from the early 16th century until 1918. After centuries of continuous expansion, it evolved from a castle into a large palace complex with ten courtyards and hundreds of halls. The king's building, the old palace, and the banquet hall face different directions, showcasing overlapping styles of Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, and Neoclassicism. Today, it is open to the public primarily as the Residence Museum, the Treasury, and the Cuvilliés Theatre. The palace offers a dense concentration of highlights: the antiquities gallery, built in the late 16th century, is the oldest hall here. Stretching over 60 m long with its vaulted ceiling covered in frescoes, it initially displayed the duke's collection of ancient Roman statues and later served as a royal banquet hall for centuries, standing as a representative Renaissance hall north of the Alps. The treasury houses over a thousand royal treasures of the Wittelsbach dynasty, including crowns and scepters. The Cuvilliés Theatre is one of Europe's best-preserved Rococo court theaters, with its ornate tiered loggias. Mozart's opera "Idomeneo" premiered here in 1781, and concerts are still frequently held. During the visit, also watch for the shell-decorated grotto courtyard and the ancestral gallery lined with family portraits—both located along the route to the antiquities gallery and easy to miss if not paying attention. The noses of the bronze lions in front of the gate have been polished shiny by travelers, as local legend says rubbing them brings good luck—worth a try when passing by. The palace was severely damaged in World War II, and most of the exquisite halls seen today were meticulously restored to their original postwar state. The entire tour route is quite long, so allocating most of a day is recommended for a thorough visit. After exploring, you can take a leisurely stroll in the adjacent court garden.Munich · 60.9km from Landshut

Neuschwanstein Castle

4.5/5

Neuschwanstein Castle is located in the foothills of the Alps in Bavaria, Germany, near the Austrian border and not far from the small town of Füssen. Built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria as a tribute to composer Wagner and inspired by the legend of the "Swan Knight" Lohengrin, construction began in 1869. Its fairy-tale appearance—white walls, blue domes, and scattered spires—served as the inspiration for Disney's Sleeping Beauty Castle. It is perennially regarded as Germany's tourism icon. The castle interior was originally planned to have over 200 rooms, but by the time of the king's death in 1886, only a dozen had been completed, each exquisitely crafted. The throne hall's dome is painted with a star-studded blue night sky, while the floor features mosaic patterns of flora and fauna, with a chandelier modeled after a Byzantine crown hanging high above. The Gothic double bed in the king's bedroom took over four years to carve by more than a dozen sculptors. The relatively large singers' hall in the castle, adorned with murals of "Lohengrin" and "Parsifal," was modeled after the Wartburg singers' hall and still hosts concerts every September. Swan motifs are nearly omnipresent, appearing in murals, door handles, and washstands. Interestingly, this medieval-inspired castle was already equipped with telephones, central heating, hot water, and automatic flushing toilets at the time, making it remarkably advanced for its era. To capture the classic postcard-perfect shot, head to Marienbrücke. This pedestrian bridge, suspended over the Pöllat Gorge, faces the southern facade of the castle and is not far from the bus drop-off point. It gets crowded in the afternoon, so an early visit is recommended. You can take the shuttle bus, a horse-drawn carriage, or hike up the mountain. The hiking route offers a bird's-eye view of the castle, and along the way, you can also see the yellow Hohenschwangau Castle, the old royal palace on the opposite hill. The castle's ending carries a touch of tragedy: Ludwig II built it with his private funds and loans, facing strong opposition from his ministers. On a late night in June 1886, he was arrested in his castle bedroom and mysteriously died days later by Lake Starnberg. Seven weeks later, the castle opened to the public. Today, visiting the interior requires following a guide, and photography is prohibited inside. Live guides provide commentary in English or German, while an audio guide is available for Chinese. Visitor guide To the castle There are three ways to reach the castle: taking the shuttle bus, riding a carriage, or going on foot. Most people choose to take the shuttle bus, then walk a short distance to Neuschwanstein Castle, where there is a viewing platform to overlook another castle—Hohenschwangau. You can also reach the castle by carriage, where you can enjoy picturesque scenery along the way, and the witty carriage driver will share legendary stories that happened here. After disembarking, it's just a short walk to the castle entrance. If you don't want to wait in line for the shuttle bus or prefer outdoor activities, you can also hike to Neuschwanstein Castle. Along the way, you can capture an aerial view of the castle, and there are relatively fewer travelers. Take a postcard-perfect photo of the castle Marienbrücke (Mary's Bridge) is located near the terminal stop of the uphill bus. This 100 m-high bridge spans between two cliffs, with its floor made of wooden planks that slightly bounce when stepped on. Here, you can capture the famous postcard-perfect shot of Neuschwanstein Castle. If you arrive early before your scheduled visit time, you can first head to Marienbrücke to photograph the beautiful view of Neuschwanstein Castle, as the bridge gets overcrowded after noon. Guided tour To visit the castle interior, you must follow the official guide. The guide provides services in English and German. You can also choose to use an audio guide (available in Chinese). After the visit, you can take a short break at the café inside the castle.Germany · Schwangau

Marienplatz

Marienplatz is the central square of Munich's old town. Since the founding of Munich in 1158, it has been the city's main square. The old and new town halls stand on the north and east sides of the square respectively, making it the true "urban living room" of Munich. Below the square is an important hub where suburban trains and subways intersect. Most attractions in the old town are within walking distance from here, and many travelers choose Marienplatz as the starting point for their Munich visit. When FC Bayern Munich wins championships, the team traditionally waves to fans on the square from the town hall balcony. At the center of the square stands the Marian column erected in 1638, featuring a golden statue of the Virgin Mary standing on a crescent moon, holding a scepter in her right hand and cradling the infant Jesus in her left. The base of the column is adorned with bronze statuettes of angels subduing mythical beasts at each corner, now serving as the visual focal point of the square. To the north, the new town hall is a dark-spired Gothic Revival building. Its tower houses a glockenspiel that performs daily at 11 am and noon, with upper puppets reenacting a medieval jousting tournament and lower puppets performing the traditional Bavarian coopers' dance. The show concludes with a golden rooster crowing, and the square is often packed with travelers looking up in anticipation before the performance begins. Opposite the town hall entrance lies the Fischbrunnen, a bronze wishing fountain dating back to the Middle Ages. According to local tradition, people wash their wallets in its waters on Ash Wednesday to invite financial luck. To the east, the old town hall boasts elegant spires, harmonizing with the onion-domed Frauenkirche to the northwest. The south tower of the Frauenkirche offers elevator access to its summit, providing a splendid vantage point to overlook the old town's red-tiled roofs and gaze at the distant Alps. Though the square itself is compact, it encapsulates centuries of Munich's history within its surrounding architecture, remaining vibrant at any time of visit.Munich · 61.4km from Landshut

Nymphenburg Palace is located in the western suburbs of Munich, serving as the summer residence for successive rulers of the Wittelsbach dynasty and an important representative of German Baroque palace and garden art. The palace's broad facade stretches gracefully, with a straight canal extending in front where swans glide year-round—a scene often regarded as one of Munich's classic images. Highlights inside the palace include the lavishly decorated Stone Hall, once the grand venue for royal celebrations, where ceiling frescoes and chandeliers complement each other; the "Gallery of Beauties," commissioned by Ludwig I and lined with over thirty portraits of 19th-century Munich beauties; and the queen's bedchamber where the "Fairy Tale King" Ludwig II was born. The museum in the converted former stables displays royal carriages and sledges, with Ludwig II's gilded carriage being particularly striking, alongside porcelain from the Nymphenburg royal manufactory. The palace gardens transition from French geometric flower beds to English landscape woodlands, dotted with pavilions like the Amalienburg, Badenburg, and Pagodenburg: the pink-walled Amalienburg is a delicate Rococo hunting lodge, with its Mirror Hall being especially notable, while the Pagodenburg was a retreat for the royal family's tea parties and summer relaxation. These garden pavilions are spaced far apart, requiring ample time for walking tours; many travelers enjoy ending their visit by strolling back along the canal to watch the swans.Munich · 63.6km from Landshut

Charles Bridge

The Charles Bridge connects the old town and the small town of Prague. It is a landmark building in Prague, and it is also the oldest stone bridge in the city. It is often said that "you have come to Prague by crossing this bridge". Inscribed on the World Heritage List This is a Gothic stone bridge imitating the Roman Angel Bridge, and it is the only way for the coronation procession of the kings of the past dynasties. In 1992, the Charles Bridge was included in the World Heritage List. When it was first built, its name was "Stone Bridge". It is said that egg yolks are also mixed into the raw mortar for reinforcement. The open-air Baroque Statue Museum Charles Bridge is 516 meters long and has a particularly wide deck. The bridge is known as "Europe's open-air Baroque sculpture gallery". There are various sculptures and reliefs decorated on both sides of the bridge. There are a total of 30 saint sculptures, all of which are masterpieces from Czech masters of the 17th and 18th centuries. It is said that behind each statue there is a touching historical story. Statue of St. John Among the many statues on the Charles Bridge, the statue of St. John is the more famous one and is considered to be the "official" guardian of the Charles Bridge. St. John, a cardinal, offended the king because of the political and religious struggle, and was sentenced to death and thrown into the river. A golden cross is engraved in the middle of the fence, where St. John was thrown from the bridge. Touch the statue and pray for happiness It is said that as long as you touch the statue of Charles Bridge with your heart, you will get a lifetime of happiness. Many bronze reliefs become very bright because too many people touch them. Most of the sculptures on the bridge have now been replaced by replicas, while the originals are kept in Prague's museums. Street artists on the bridge In addition to various statues, the street artists on the bridge are also a unique landscape. There are art painting booths on both sides of the bridge, and many street painters paint on the spot, and most of the themes are taken from the Charles Bridge. In addition, there are some artistic workers who perform with musical instruments, bringing infinite vitality to the Charles Bridge. The bridge tower overlooks the beauty of Prague There are two bridge towers at both ends of the Charles Bridge - the Old Town Bridge Tower and the Small Town Bridge Tower. You can climb the bridge tower and overlook the Charles Bridge and the city of Prague, which is even more beautiful when the sun sets in the evening.Czech Republic · Prague

Old Town Square

No "wishing pool" yet still stunning "I stood in the Old Town Square at dusk in Prague, casting hope into the wishing well..." You must have heard Jolin Tsai's "Prague Square," a song depicting the Old Town Square surrounded by medieval architecture. However, the reality is there is no "wishing well" mentioned in the lyrics, but the fairy-tale atmosphere here is enchanting enough. The Old Town Square was built approx. 900 years ago and is a historically renowned square in Prague, located between Wenceslas Square and Charles Bridge. It is also the heart of the city, bustling with crowds every summer. Public square highlights At the center of the square stands a statue of Jan Hus built in 1915, erected to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of the Charles University rector. The surrounding buildings showcase diverse architectural styles, ranging from Gothic masterpieces like the Church of Our Lady before Týn to Baroque gems such as St. Nicholas Church. A major attraction for visitors is the Prague astronomical clock on the Old Town Hall facade. On the hour, the clock chimes as windows above it open, revealing a procession of 12 apostle figures that bow to the crowd. If interested, you can also climb the tower of the old town hall to overlook the panoramic view of the old town. The roofs in the city are almost all painted red, while the slightly protruding spires of clock towers and churches are green. They are scattered yet orderly throughout the city, and the vivid colors give Prague a fairy-tale charm. Public square activity The old town square is not only a popular tourist destination but also frequently used for new year celebrations, holiday markets (Christmas and Easter) and rally activities. On ordinary days, there are many street performers in the square, and many local youth come here to take wedding photos. The square is surrounded by many cafes. If you're tired from exploring, you can order a coffee at an outdoor cafe, and don't miss the grilled sausages and ice cream. Enjoying the music and dance performances on the square is truly refreshing. The alleys around the square are lined with small shops selling various art goods—if you like them, you can buy some as souvenirs.Czech Republic · Prague

Hallstatt is located on the shores of Lake Hallstatt in Salzkammergut, Austria, surrounded by the peaks of the Alps. In 1997, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The town prospered because of salt, with salt mining dating back approx. 7,000 years. The early European Iron Age "Hallstatt culture" is named after this town. The town's colorful wooden houses are built in layers on the steep hillside, reflected in the calm lake water. From the lakeside promenade, the painted wooden houses, church spires, and the lake and mountain scenery blend together. Take a cable car up the hillside where the salt mine is located, and from theSky Walkviewing platform, you can overlook the town and the panoramic lake and mountain views. The salt mine is open to visitors, who can go deep into the mine tunnels and experience thousands of years of salt mining history. And the bone house next to Basilika St. Michael is another unique view in Hallstatt.Austria · Hallstatt

The Munich Residence is one of the most impressive historical attractions in Munich. The palace is beautifully decorated with grand halls, elegant rooms, and detailed artwork that show the wealth and history of the Bavarian royal family. I enjoyed walking through the different sections of the palace, especially the lavish rooms filled with paintings, chandeliers, and antique furniture. The museum was well organized, and there was plenty of information about the history of the building and its former rulers. The peaceful courtyards also provided a nice place to relax during the visit. Overall, the Munich Residence offers a wonderful mix of history, art, and architecture. It is a must-visit for anyone interested in culture and royal history, and I would gladly visit again.

We choose the horse carriage ride up, it was €8 a person. It took around 20 minutes and we enjoyed the forest view. Make sure to arrive and park at least an hour early. The entrance time is exact to every 5 minutes for crowd control. The entrance ticket includes an audio set and takes around 30 minutes. You are moved thru the rooms rather quickly. There are free lockers at information at the entrance area if needed. No pictures can be taken during the tour. **not handicapped friendly ** must be able to walk for 2-3 hours and climb up and down many flights of stairs. There are no elevators. We planned to walk down but it began to rain. So we took the horse carriage again -/€4/person.

I visited Marienplatz in Munich and really enjoyed the lively atmosphere there. It is the main square of the city, surrounded by beautiful historic buildings and always full of energy. One memorable moment for me was hearing the town hall clock music play at the New Town Hall—it added a charming and unique touch to the whole experience, even though I did not stay for the full show. I also enjoyed walking around the square, watching people, and relaxing at a nearby café. It is a great place to feel the heart of Munich, with many attractions and shopping streets close by. Overall, Marienplatz is a must-visit spot that captures both the history and daily life of the city.

The Charles Bridge's towers resemble black, square monuments, and the smell of the Vltava River wafts through the archways. Thirty statues of saints stand on either side, the most famous being St. John of Nepomuk, his bronze relief gleaming from being touched so many times. Stalls selling sketches and bracelets line the bridge, but quiet descends in the middle. At dusk, swans glide past the piers, their flapping wings clearer than human voices. Looking down from the archways, the castle district's spires become silhouettes in the setting sun.
