Bayeux Tapestry Museum not only showcases the glorious history of the tapestry and its creation process, but also displays the world-famous embroidery—the Bayeux Tapestry, which is the museum's centerpiece. The Bayeux Tapestry, also known as the Queen Matilda Tapestry, is 70 m long (62 m remaining) and 0.5 m wide, and was created in the 11th century. The tapestry's embroidery depicts the events of the Battle of Hastings and the appearance of Halley's Comet in 1066, featuring a total of 623 figures and animals such as dogs, horses, birds, and dragons.Bayeux · 21.8km from Villers-Bocage

The National Residence of the Invalids

4.7/5
521 reviews
The National Residence of the Invalids was commissioned by Louis XIV in 1670. At that time, the king wished to provide a residence and rehabilitation facility for soldiers who were wounded, elderly, or ill and unable to continue serving, allowing them to spend their remaining years in a peaceful and tranquil environment. The construction of The National Residence of the Invalids was overseen by architect Libéral Bruant, with the first phase beginning in March 1671 and completed in February 1677. The first group of disabled veterans moved in as early as 1674. Jules Hardouin-Mansart later took over the design and construction, and the entire complex was not officially completed until 1706. The National Residence of the Invalids is a masterpiece of Baroque architectural style, combining symmetry, simplicity, and solemnity, and is regarded as one of the iconic buildings of French classicism. The sculptural decorations on the building highlight the praise of the "Sun King" Louis XIV and a distinct military theme. Its main axis consists of the central grand courtyard and the church extending southward, composed of several quadrilateral courtyard-style buildings and 2 churches. The golden dome building is the main structure, with the dome standing 107 m above the ground, adorned with intricate patterns and statues, all made of gilded materials. The interior of the vault is painted with numerous frescoes depicting stories of Christ. Today, The National Residence of the Invalids still serves its original function of housing and accommodating disabled soldiers, while also being home to military museums, including the Musée de l'Armée. The museum's collections span from ancient and medieval times to contemporary French history, with over 500,000 artifacts. The National Residence of the Invalids is regarded as a symbol of French honor, and every French president fires a salute here during their inauguration. Additionally, The National Residence of the Invalids hosts various cultural activities and exhibitions, making it an important cultural exchange venue in Paris.France · Paris

Fontainebleau Palace

The Palace of Fontainebleau is known as "the epitome of French history" and is included in the World Heritage List. It was originally a royal hunting palace and was expanded into an important palace in the French Renaissance. Later, many architects and artists participated in the reconstruction, so it left the imprint of the styles of various periods. Location Fontainebleau is a small town located about 55 kilometers southeast of Paris. It is one of the favorite weekend excursions of Parisians. The Palace of Fontainebleau is located here, surrounded by forests. The Fontainebleau Forest surrounding the palace was originally a royal hunting ground, and now it has become an outdoor sports base for bouldering enthusiasts. The bouldering season in October attracts many rock climbers from all over the world. The main building of the Palace of Fontainebleau includes a main tower, six palaces, five courtyards and four gardens. The main attractions in the palace are the ballroom, the conference hall, the chapel, the throne hall, the Diana fresco promenade, the François I promenade, the queen's bedroom, the Napoleon's living room, and the Pope's apartment. Napoleon loves yellow, and his wife Josephine prefers roses, so the overall colors of the interior decoration are mainly yellow and rose red. There are also four museums in the palace, namely the China Pavilion, the Napoleon I Pavilion, the Gallery, and the Home Pavilion. Among them, the Chinese Pavilion has a large collection of precious cultural relics from Yuanmingyuan, and displays thousands of art treasures such as ancient paintings, gold and jade jewelry, and sculptures of China's Ming and Qing Dynasties, but sometimes it is not open to visit. Among Western museums, the Palace of Fontainebleau is the collection and exhibition of Yuanmingyuan treasures. #White Horse Court# The White Horse Court is the main entrance to Fontainebleau. The horseshoe-shaped steps here are a scene of the Palace of Fontainebleau, where Napoleon gave his speech when he abdicated. #China Pavilion# Entering the building from the right side of the courtyard is the ticket office. Don't forget to lead the audio guide after purchasing the ticket. Then walk along this promenade and start to visit the Palace of Fontainebleau. There are stairs near the end, so don't rush upstairs, just keep going to the China Pavilion. If you can't find the location of the China Pavilion, you can ask the staff. The door of the China Pavilion is generally closed, and it needs to be closed after entering. There is a golden pagoda about 2 meters high in a prominent position in the museum. The whole body is inlaid with emeralds on every floor, which is basically similar to the existing golden pagoda in the Forbidden City in Beijing. There are also two precious gilt bells and other various Yuanmingyuan treasures. Except for weekends and holidays, the China Pavilion is closed earlier, so you can visit it in the morning. On March 1, 2015, 15 exhibits were stolen from the Palace of Fontainebleau, including the cloisonné unicorn and the golden manza in the old collection of Yuanmingyuan. #other treasures# Go upstairs from the China Pavilion, and you can continue to enjoy the Napoleon I Pavilion, the Throne Hall (Napoleon's throne is very small) and many other rooms. You can also see the François I promenade. The lower half is made of golden yellow fine wood carvings about 2 meters high as a retaining wall. Exquisite murals, the entire promenade is both brilliant and elegant. After visiting the main exhibition halls, go down to the first floor to the exit, where there is a souvenir shop, and you can go out to browse the courtyard and garden. In fact, you can also go back to the China Pavilion after a short walk from the exit, but there is only a hint to enter the courtyard. In addition to the indoor landscape, the courtyard of the Palace of Fontainebleau is also very characteristic. The decorative style of the combination of thin wood retFrance · Fontainebleau

Sainte-Chapelle

8.1
4.5/5
388 reviews
Sainte-Chapelle is a Gothic royal chapel on the Île de la Cité in Paris, built in the mid-13th century under the order of King Louis IX of France in less than seven years. It was originally conceived as a grand "reliquary": Louis IX commissioned this chapel to house over 20 Passion relics purchased from Byzantium—including the Crown of Thorns and fragments of the True Cross—whose collective cost nearly equaled half the kingdom's annual revenue, with the Crown of Thorns alone exceeding the chapel's construction expenses. The architectural highlight lies in the upper royal chapel: 15 stained-glass windows towering over 10 m high virtually replace stone walls, depicting more than 1,100 biblical scenes from Genesis to the relics' arrival in Paris, while the 15th-century rose window at the western end illustrates the Apocalypse. Ascending via a narrow spiral staircase from the lower chapel, visitors are greeted by a dazzling interplay of blue-violet and crimson light beneath a deep-blue vault studded with golden fleurs-de-lis; the pillars' lily motifs symbolize the French monarchy, and twelve apostle statues line the walls. The lower chapel, once used by palace staff, features simpler decor but preserves the 13th-century Annunciation mural—considered among Paris's oldest surviving frescoes. Note that relics like the Crown of Thorns were removed after the French Revolution (the Crown was later transferred to Notre-Dame Cathedral), so travelers visiting specifically for them should adjust expectations. Tucked within the Palais de Justice complex, the chapel's entrance requires following signage and passing security checks, with queues often demanding patience. Regular classical concerts held here—where performances unfold under the stained-glass glow at night—are a deliberately planned experience for many travelers.France · Paris

Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey

4.7/5

How it all started with a dream? Legend has it that the story of Mont-Saint-Michel began in 708 after the Archangel Michael appeared three times in dreams to Bishop Aubert. Saint Michael reportedly requested the construction of a sanctuary in his honor on an island called Mont-Tombe. The building of this first oratory echoes the construction of the initial sanctuary dedicated to the archangel on Mount Gargano in Italy's Apulia region, but above all, it reflects the rise of Christianity in the West at that time. In 966, Duke Richard I of Normandy established Benedictine monks on the Mount, monks who followed the Rule of Saint Benedict. From the moment the monks settled and the construction of the Romanesque abbey church began according to tradition in 1023, Mont Saint-Michel became an essential pilgrimage site throughout the Christian West. Pilgrims came to seek protection and salvation for their souls from Saint Michael. At the same time, the abbey began producing, preserving, and studying a large number of manuscripts. It thus became a major cultural center during the Middle Ages. As a true political and intellectual crossroads, Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey welcomed pilgrims from all walks of life, including several kings of France and England, such as Henry II Plantagenet, Saint Louis, Louis XI, Anne of Brittany, Francis I... An incredible abbey with the appearance of a fortress A true architectural feat, the abbey is dizzying and disorienting. What stands out is its verticality. Its location at the summit and on the side of the cliff requires a complex organization with overlapping and winding structures. Strategically located in the heart of the bay, the abbey also served as a fortress for the Duchy of Normandy during the Middle Ages. Throughout the Hundred Years' War, despite numerous conflicts in the region, Le Mont-Saint-Michel held firm. This was largely due to the construction of formidable ramparts that made it an impregnable stronghold, as well as the relentless ebb and flow of the tides. Le Mont-Saint-Michel endured an English siege starting in 1423 and emerged victorious in 1434, becoming a symbol of triumph for the Kingdom of France. In 1421 during the Hundred Years' War, at the worst moments of the English siege, the Romanesque choir of the church collapsed. It was only fully rebuilt a century later in the spirit of Flamboyant Gothic art. The abbey also amazes with the diversity of its architectural forms! From monks to jailers In the 17th century, pilgrimages began to decline. Nevertheless, the monks (now Maurists) soon had to contend with the arrival of prisoners detained by lettres de cachet in an abbey gradually transforming into a prison. It earned the nickname "Bastille of the Seas." During the French Revolution, the state nationalized clergy property, and the monks were subsequently expelled from the abbey. Transformed into a "central prison" in the 19th century, the abbey had most of its spaces completely redesigned to accommodate the largest number of common-law prisoners and other political prisoners. Among its notable inmates, Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey housed Armand Barbès and Auguste Blanqui, fierce opponents of the July Monarchy. This prison period, although dark, helped preserve the abbey from complete destruction. From the cockade to the snow globe When the prison permanently closed its doors in 1863, the abbey was completely dilapidated. It had to be saved! At the same time, the concept of heritage was born, and the abbey was listed as a Historical Monument in 1874. From that moment on, restoration work began, and the surroundings of Mont-Saint-Michel were developed to welcome the first tourists in its history. Following the celebration of the monastic millennium in 1965-1966, a small community of Benedictine monks settled in the abbey in 1969. In 2001, they were replaced by the Monastic Fraternities of Jerusalem. Today, about a dozen monks and nuns live within this national monument. "Mont-Saint-Michel and its Bay" were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979, making it one of the first French cultural sites to be included. About twenty years later, the site was listed again, this time as part of the serial property "Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France." This dual recognition highlights its outstanding universal value. An abbey of yesterday and today Extraordinary restoration projects are multiplying at the abbey with the aim of preserving its exceptional character and maintaining it in the best possible condition for future generations. The cloister, the statue of the archangel, and more recently the buildings of La Merveille have been restored. At the same time, numerous cultural events are organized each year to bring the abbey to life. We offer a rich, diverse, and bold cultural program.Le Mont-Saint-Michel · 79.8km from Villers-Bocage

There are two major attractions in the Invalides. The first is the Military Museum (Musée de l’Armée), which houses a rich collection of military relics from ancient times to the present. The museum was first established in 1871 and was called the Artillery Museum. In 1896, the Military History Museum was established. In 1905, the two museums merged to become the current Military Museum. The exhibition area is 12,000 square meters, and the collection exceeds 500,000 pieces, including weapons, armor, firearms, uniforms, paintings and other forms of collections. The second is Napoleon's Mausoleum. Napoleon's coffin was moved to the bottom of the church dome on April 2, 1861, and placed on the first floor of the church, so that visitors can overlook it from the circular corridor on the second floor. The tombs of Napoleon's other relatives and other generals are also located here. Napoleon's coffin is made of red quartzite and placed on a green granite base. There are 12 relief paintings of the goddess of victory engraved on the walls of the corridor around the church, each representing a glorious battle.

Sainte-Chapelle is one of the most beautiful places I visited in Paris. The upper chapel is simply breathtaking, especially because of the incredible stained-glass windows that cover almost the entire space. The colors, details and natural light create a very special atmosphere that is difficult to appreciate fully in photos.I also liked that the visit is quite manageable and does not require several hours, so it fits easily into a day of sightseeing. The lower chapel is also worth seeing, with beautiful decorations and a very different feel from the upper level. Its central location makes it easy to combine with other nearby attractions. I would definitely recommend visiting during the day, when the light makes the stained glass even more impressive. A memorable and highly recommended stop in Paris.
