Minneriya National Parkis located in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka, situated between the two ancient cities of Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa, and is one of Sri Lanka's well-known wildlife viewing destinations, covering an area of approx. 90 square kilometers. The park features a rich natural environment, where forests, shrublands, and lakeside grasslands interweave, creating a diverse tropical ecological view. Dense woodlands provide habitats for wildlife, while open grasslands serve as important areas for animals to forage and roam. With the changing seasons, the park's waters, vegetation, and grassland views also present different appearances, making it full of natural charm. The lake surface reflects the surrounding green vegetation, and the lakeshore is open with good visibility, making it a representative natural view of the park. The lake and the surrounding terrestrial ecosystems are interconnected, together forming the park's unique wetland and grassland environment.Polonnaruwa · 7.3km from Minneriya

Sigiriya Lion Rock is the site of a palace in the sky built atop a nearly 200m-high orange-red giant rock. In the 5th century, King Kashyapa I built the royal palace on the summit, and during his 18-year reign, he completed this complex that integrates a palace, gardens, and a fortress. It was later lost in the jungle for a long time until it was rediscovered in modern times, and today it is a representative monument in Sri Lanka's Cultural Golden Triangle. The entire site unfolds layer by layer from bottom to top. At the foot of the mountain are symmetrical water gardens surrounded by a moat. The ancient water system was ingeniously designed, and the fountains can still spout water by gravity during the rainy season. A pair of giant lion paws halfway up the mountain are the remains of the lion-shaped palace gate from that time. The brick lion body and head have long since collapsed and weathered, and now one can only imagine its former grandeur from the stone steps between the paws. Upon reaching the summit, the platform retains the ruins of the palace and reservoirs. Looking out from the height, the jungle and distant mountains are all in view.Sigiriya · 18.5km from Minneriya

Polonnaruwa Ancient City, located in the northeast of Sri Lanka, 216 km northeast of the capital, Colombo. In 1982, Polonnaruwa Ancient City was inscribed on the World Heritage List as a cultural heritage site. Site zones The monuments in the ancient city can be roughly divided into five areas: the Royal Palace complex, the Quadrangle, the Northern Group, the area near the historical hotel (i.e., on the banks of the reservoir), the Southern Group (on the way to the new town), and some scattered monuments. In the ancient city, you can find not only Brahmanical ruins from the Chola period but also the remains of the mythical garden city built by Parakramabahu I in the 12th century. Here, you'll find ancient ruins, unique sacrificial altars, classic Sri Lankan stupas, and stone Buddha statues carved into walls. You can easily spend a whole day here without realizing how time flies. History Polonnaruwa served as the capital of the Chola Dynasty and the Sinhalese Kingdom, flourishing for 3 centuries. Although it has a history of nearly 1,000 years, it is better preserved thanAnuradhapura. In the second half of the 10th century, after the South Indian Chola Dynasty occupiedAnuradhapura, they established their capital in Polonnaruwa. Strategically, Polonnaruwa was undoubtedly a better choice for a capital to better guard against rebellions from the Rohana Sinhalese Kingdom in the southeast. After King Vijayabahu I drove the Chola Dynasty out of Sri Lanka in 1070, he retained Polonnaruwa as the capital. Under the reign of Parakramabahu I, the development ofPolonnaruwareached its peak. The king built massive buildings and beautiful parks, and the 25-square-kilometer reservoir is a particularly famous achievement. This reservoir is so vast that people call it the Sea of Parakrama. Since the current lake is a combination of three old reservoirs, it may not be the exact pool built by Parakramabahu back then. Nissanka Malla, the successor of Parakramabahu I, nearly bankrupted the entire country in an attempt to match the achievements of his predecessor. In the early 13th century, Polonnaruwa, likePolonnaruwaandAnuradhapura, began to suffer frequent invasions from India. Later, like the latter,Polonnaruwaalso fell, and the center of Sinhalese power shifted to the western region of Sri Lanka.Polonnaruwa · 14.5km from Minneriya

Pidurangala Rock is a large rock north of Sigiriya Rock. Its height and structure are very similar to Sigiriya Rock, making it an excellent spot to view Sigiriya Rock from a distance. Climbing Pidurangala Rock takes about 45 minutes, and the entrance is at the temple of the same name at the foot of the mountain. The temple houses several ancient caves and Buddha statues. Start climbing the stairs from the temple until you see a reclining Buddha. After that, the stairs disappear, and you need to walk along a small path for a few dozen m, then climb over a pile of boulders to reach the summit platform. Climbing the boulders is somewhat difficult; if you encounter a difficult spot, please look for an alternative path nearby. The view from the top is excellent, offering a distant view of Sigiriya Rock and the surrounding jungle. Lying on the boulders, feeling like the only person in the world, is incredibly pleasant.Sigiriya · 17.8km from Minneriya

Gar Temple is a famous tourist attraction in Polonnaruwa. The temple was carved by an unknown artist on a whole piece of giant granite stone. Four Buddha statues of different shapes were engraved on the granite boulder, which fully demonstrated the Buddhist modeling art of the Sinhalese civilization at that time. Although the scale of the Gar Temple is not large, the overall atmosphere is full of solemn and inviolable atmosphere, which makes people deeply shocked and stop for a long time in silence. Introduction to Buddha Statues - Meditation Buddha Statue The Meditation Buddha Statue is 4.6 meters high and sits on a lotus seat. Behind the Buddha statue are four small Buddha statues decorated with dragon patterns. According to archaeologists and historians, the shape of this Buddha statue is very rare in ancient Sinhalese carving art, and it is obviously influenced by Mahayana Buddhism. Introduction to Buddha Statues——Vidyhadhara Buddha Statue The Vidyhadhara Buddha statue is 1.4 meters high and is placed in a man-made stone cave. It is similar to the Buddha statue in the shape of meditation, but the carving is more delicate. The lotus base is decorated with lion patterns, and there are also backrests and canopies behind the Buddha statue.Nissankamallapura · 13.5km from Minneriya

Dambulla Cave Temple is a famous Buddhist cave temple in Sri Lanka, carved into a massive rock rising over 100 m above the plains. Legend has it that in the 1st century BC, King Valagamba took refuge here for many years to escape invaders. After regaining his throne, he converted the caves into a Buddhist temple. Subsequent kings continued to expand and renovate it, gradually forming the current layout of five interconnected caves. The caves preserve over 2,000 square meters of murals painted with natural pigments like tree sap, as well as more than 150 statues. The themes are mostly related to the life of the Buddha. Monks still practice here today, so it is not merely a display site.Dambulla · 34.8km from Minneriya

The Royal Palace of the ancient city of Polonnaruwa is the ruins of the palace of Parakarama I, located on the east coast of the northern end of the Parakarama Sea. Miyagi is rectangular, 31 meters long and 12.6 meters wide. It is said that it once had 7 stories high, more than 50 rooms, and 36 pillars of different shapes supporting an audience hall, banquet hall and some other annex halls. The thickness of the wall is 3 meters, and the wall has neatly arranged openings. The light beams enter through the openings. It is inferred that it should have been used to fix the floors of the second and third floors.  To the east of the palace is the royal bath where the ladies of the palace bathe.Polonnaruwa · 14.9km from Minneriya

We visited Minneriya hoping to see the famous elephant gatherings, but there were surprisingly few. The park’s terrain is mostly forested, with limited open plains for wildlife viewing. In contrast, Yala National Park offered a much richer experience with more wildlife sightings, including elephants.

The Dambulla Caves, a world cultural heritage, is the largest, most famous and best-preserved cave temple in Sri Lanka. A half-day tour of the caves was arranged, and 4 impressions are still fresh in my memory. 1. The antiquity of the caves. The Dambulla Caves were built in 89 BC (some say 1st-2nd century AD), earlier than the Mogao Caves built in 366 AD in my country. After more than a thousand years of unremitting efforts, a spectacular pattern of 5 caves connected to each other was formed between the rock walls on the hillside of the giant stone (186 meters high). 2. The beauty of the statues. The 2,100 square meters of murals and 157 Buddha statues in the caves are all treasures of Buddhist art. The most beautiful murals. The Buddha murals in Cave No. 2-Great King Cave, from the cave ceiling to the cave wall, are completed in one go, and are magnificent. The most beautiful statues. The 14-meter-long reclining Buddha in Cave No. 1-Heavenly King Cave is huge in size, peaceful in expression, and graceful in lines. 3. Fun of monkeys. It takes more than 20 minutes to walk up the mountain road with more than 400 steps from the foot of the mountain to the cave. All the way up, the view is wide, the air is fresh, and monkeys can be seen everywhere in groups, playing, being coy, or exercising, which are very cute. The locals told us: the reason for depositing shoes is not to prevent people from stealing, but to prevent monkeys from snatching them. 4. Pain in feet. You can only enter the cave after taking off your shoes to show your piety. The hot sand and the stones hurt your feet. My feet hurt so much... No one ever reminded me to wear thick socks.

Located in the north of the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, the Rankot Stupa is the largest stupa in the ancient city and the fourth largest stupa in Sri Lanka. It is dark red in color, made of clay, shaped like a bell, with a spire on top. The tower is 56.4 meters high and 55 meters in diameter. It was built in the 12th century during the reign of King Nisankama. There are incomplete Buddha statues and worship buildings similar to shrines around the stupa.
