Badlands National Park is a national park in the United States, located in southwestern South Dakota, covering an area of 990 km², and featuring many buttes, spires, and grasslands. The Badlands Wilderness Area within it covers 259.58 km² and is the habitat of the black-footed ferret, an endangered mammal in the United States. The term "Badlands" refers to rugged, inhospitable terrain. It was named by Native Americans who found the land impossible to cultivate, and it is a world-renowned geological wonder. With sparse vegetation and a desolate landscape, it resembles the surface of the moon.
