Yunshuiyao Ancient Town
No. 4 of Night Attractions in Fujian

Yunshuiyao Ancient Town

7.8
4.4/5
4.6k reviews

Yunshuiyao Ancient Town was originally named Changjiao, but gained fame after the film "The Knot" was filmed here. The ancient village subsequently adopted the movie's name and has now become a highly popular stop in the Fujian Tulou area. The attraction consists of three parts—Yunshuiyao Ancient Town, Hegui Building, and Huaiyuan Building—stretching along the Changjiao River. The ancient village sits in the middle, with the two tulou buildings at either end of the river, all connected by a walkable route. The five-story Hegui Building stands out with its striking square structure, a rare tall rectangular tulou. What's more remarkable is that it was built entirely on marshland, supported by pinewood piles that have held firm for over 200 years, earning it the nickname "Noah's Ark on land." In its central courtyard lies a small sunken pebble area that remains perpetually damp - stepping on it and gently stomping reveals subtle vibrations beneath your feet. The compound also features two ancient wells positioned close together: one with clear water and the other with turbid water, locally called the "yin-yang wells." In contrast, the Huaiyuan Building embodies a different character. This concentric circular tulou features an ancestral hall named "This Is the Room" at its inner ring's center, which once served as the Jian family's private school. Its intricately carved beams and rafters showcase exquisite craftsmanship, inviting close examination of the tulou's interior artistry. Nestled between buildings, this ancient town invites leisurely exploration: A dozen century-old banyan trees line the stream with aerial roots dipping into the water. Cobblestone paths wind along the bank beside creaking waterwheels, while stone bridges span murmuring streams where white ducks waddle—painting a pastoral scene.

Fujian Tulou (Nanjing) Scenic Area
No. 17 of Best Things to Do in Fujian

Fujian Tulou (Nanjing) Scenic Area

7.4
4.4/5
1.3k reviews

The Fujian Tulou (Nanjing) Scenic Area is nestled among the mountains of Nanjing, Zhangzhou, Fujian, and consists of three major sections: Tianluokeng, Yunshuiyao, and Hekeng Tulou Folk Culture Village. The tulou are large family residences built by the Hakka and Minnan ancestors using rammed earth in mountainous areas. In 2008, the Fujian Tulou, represented by clusters such as Tianluokeng and Hekeng, were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, making Nanjing a key destination for tulou exploration. The highlight of the Tianluokeng section is the "Four Dishes and One Soup" tulou cluster: viewed from the observation deck, the square Buyun Building stands at the center, surrounded by three round buildings—Zhenchang, Ruiyun, and Hechang—and the oval Wenchang Building, resembling a set meal from afar. Two other spots in the same section are worth a leisurely visit: Yuchang Building, nicknamed "The Leaning Tower" due to its tilted beams and pillars, has stood firm for over 700 years; in Taxia Village, an S-shaped stream flows through, with round buildings on both banks forming a taiji diagram, while a row of stone flagpoles in front of Deyuan Hall commemorates the Zhang clan's past achievements. The Yunshuiyao section, originally named Changjiao, gained its current name after the film "The Knot" was filmed here. Cobblestone paths wind along the stream, shaded by centuries-old banyan trees, with waterwheels, stone bridges, and old streets creating a laid-back ancient town vibe. Hegui Building here, built on a swamp and standing firm for over 200 years, is called the "Land Noah's Ark," while Huaiyuan Building is a finely crafted double-ring round building. The Hekeng Tulou Folk Culture Village sees fewer visitors, with over a dozen square and round tulou nestled between mountains and water. From the observation deck, their layout resembles the Big Dipper, exuding a lively atmosphere. The three sections are connected by winding mountain roads, so a full day is recommended to explore all; if time is limited, prioritize Tianluokeng and Yunshuiyao. The tulou are still inhabited today, so tread lightly when visiting. At mealtime, try Hakka and Minnan-style home-cooked dishes at nearby farmhouses.

Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster

7
4.5/5
4.1k reviews

The Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster is nestled among the mountains of Nanjing, Fujian, and is the iconic architectural complex of Fujian tulou, often referred to as the "calling card" of Fujian tulou. It consists of five three-story tulou buildings: the square Buyun Building at the center, surrounded by the round Zhenchang, Ruiyun, and Hechang Buildings, and the oval Wenchang Building. This layout, with one square building at the center and four round ones encircling it, resembles a dining table setup, earning it the playful nickname "Four Dishes and One Soup." It has also been the ancestral home of the Hakka Huang clan since the Qing Dynasty until its final form in the 1960s. There are two unmissable perspectives to appreciate these tulou clusters: from the hillside viewing platform overlooking five earthen buildings resembling a blooming plum blossom amidst terraced fields—their rammed-earth walls turn golden in the evening light, perfect for photography; or from the valley floor after descending the winding road, where the stepped tulou complex appears to emerge dramatically from the mountainside, often likened by travelers to a "Potala Palace." The shifting roadside views alternately reveal square and round structures in ever-changing compositions. The tulou still houses the Huang family today, with laundry drying in the courtyard, chickens and ducks strolling through the alleys, and cooking smoke rising behind the yellow walls—a living tableau of Hakka life. The central Buyun building, constructed during the Qing dynasty, bears the name "Buyun" (ascending to the clouds), embodying the clan's hope for their descendants to excel in studies and official careers. Stepping inside and gazing up at the tiered wooden corridors, one can truly experience the spatial layout of communal living.

Fujian Tulou in Zhangzhou

Visiting the Tulou in Zhangzhou is a way to explore the architectural marvels of Fujian's Hakka people and their way of life rooted in family culture. These unique, round or square rammed-earth mega-buildings, such as the Tianluokeng Tulou cluster, serve both residential and defensive functions, showcasing the remarkable wisdom of the ancients. Stepping inside the Tulou allows one to learn about the Hakka people's tradition of living in clan communities, their customs, and their clan history. Standing amidst the centuries-old, thick earthen walls, one can deeply feel a stable, harmonious, and self-contained community culture and architectural aesthetic.

Hegui Lou

5.2
4.6/5
391 reviews

Hegui Lou is also known as Shanjiao Lou and is a square tulou in Yunshuiyao Ancient Town. It was built at great expense by the Jian clan during the Yongzheng era of the Qing Dynasty. The name of the building is derived from the phrase "harmony is precious," and it served as the prototype for Qiu's home in the animated film Big Fish & Begonia. The building is 5 stories high and over 20 m, with rammed earth walls on the ground floor over 1.3 m thick, which become thinner with each ascending level. More than 100 rooms enclose a regular courtyard, with only 1 main gate in the center and a staircase in each of the 4 corners. The wonder of this building lies in its foundation: the entire structure is built on a marsh. Back then, over 200 pine piles were driven into the marsh to lay the foundation, before the walls were rammed and the building was erected on top. After nearly 300 years of wind, rain, and multiple earthquakes, it remains stable. Walking into the courtyard, the ground feels slightly soft underfoot, and if you insert a bamboo pole into the mud, water will seep out. In the center of the courtyard is a 3-room, 1-hall private school, which, together with the surrounding auxiliary buildings outside the main structure, forms a "house-enveloping-building, building-enveloping-house" layout. There are 2 wells in the courtyard not far from each other; one is clear and bright, with red carp raised inside, while the other is murky all year round, and they have remained distinct for many years. The open space in front of the building is perfect for taking low-angle shots of its square, towering panoramic view.

376 reviews

Huaiyuan Lou was built in 1905–1909 and is a well-preserved, double-ring circular tulou with exquisite architectural craftsmanship. The building is 4 stories and 13 m high, with a diameter of 38 m. It has 34 rooms per floor, totaling 136 rooms, and was built by the Jian family.Huaiyuan Lou A highlight of Huaiyuan Lou is the ancestral hall at the core of the inner courtyard, known as "Si Shi Shi," where family descendants studied. "Si Shi Shi" is exquisite and elegant, with the upper and lower hall structure covering an area of 190 square meters. The interior features carved beams and painted rafters, creating a rustic, natural, and scholarly atmosphere. This is a double-ring building designed by the same architect as Zhencheng Building, and its design is quite orderly. Inside the building is a golden plaque gifted by He Yingqin that reads "Zhu Wo Yi Shi" (Help My Righteous Army), and in the open space in front of the building is a Tai Chi pattern made of pebbles. The tulou and the village are surrounded by rice paddies and tea plantations, creating a peaceful pastoral scene. The foundation is built with giant pebbles and rammed earth to a height of over 3 m, and the walls remain smooth and intact to this day. Standing outside the wall and looking up with your face against it, you can see that the foundation is narrow at the bottom, wider in the middle, and gradually narrows at the top, resembling an olive. This structure follows the principles of mechanics, is wind-resistant, and makes the building sturdier.

Hekeng Tulou Cluster is located in the village of Qujiangwei in the town of Shuyang, Nanjing County, Zhangzhou. The terrace at Shizishan ("the Lion Mountain") is a perfect spot overlooking the tulou complex, and on the mountaintop, 27 tulou structures of varied styles and shapes are within view in three different directions. A central atrium is found in the tulou, with the surrounding space cut up into several equal-sized cubicles. Rooms in this spherical building resemble the shape of an axe, and the whole structure very much looks like a tall wooden bucket, from within which one feels as if looking out from the bottom of a well.

Yunshuiyao Scenic Area was rather average, not as good as I had imagined. One rice paddy was quite beautiful, though. The village of Taxia where I stayed was a pleasant surprise—more rustic and pristine, with a wonderful environment.

Four dishes and one soup, truly living up to the name. From above, it looks like a standard four dishes and one soup; but on site, each dish is unique and wonderful, with round, square, and oval shapes, organically combining different styles, fully demonstrating the superb wisdom of people in the past.

Hegui Tower, also known as Shanjiao Tower, is located in Pushan Village, Meilin Town, Nanjing County. Built in the 10th year of the Yongzheng reign of the Qing Dynasty, it was constructed by Jian Ciping, a public servant, at a total investment of 15,000 taels of silver. Spanning 1,547 square meters, it is the tallest earthen building in Nanjing and a typical example of the numerous square-shaped earthen buildings found in southwestern Fujian.

[Scenery] Huaiyuan Building is also a representative of circular earthen buildings. The introduction of the owner Jian Changshi is displayed in the building. It is also a representative work of Nanjing earthen buildings. There is a Buddhist temple after the second door, where the Nanhai Guanyin is enshrined. There is also a school in the earthen building. The earthen building can be said to be a small fortress. The first floor is a kitchen, the second floor is a warehouse, and the third and fourth floors are bedrooms. There is a well on the ground. There are also facilities to prevent bandits.

On the second day of the Lunar New Year, during the holiday, I left home at 6:30 am and arrived before 9 am – the whole place was deserted. It was completely untouched by commercialization, very pristine, and even just watching the ducks in the river was soothing. You can see the Tulou (Hakka earthen buildings) from the observation deck; although they're not large, there are very few people!

Came here on January 1, 2014. Tasha Village is also a major attraction in Nanjing County. This ancient village is hidden in the mountains. A stream runs through the village, and the houses are distributed on both sides of the stream. Because the stream flows through the village like Tai Chi, Tasha Village is also called "Tai Chi Water Village". In my opinion, this kind of village settled by the stream is most similar to the ancient town of Xitang in Zhejiang. There are still many residents in the village. It is both ancient and vibrant. There is almost no commercial atmosphere. It is all original ecological life atmosphere. It is rare and worth a visit. I have seen earth buildings in other places. I came here mainly to see the Zhang family temple "Deyuan Hall". Starting from Yunshuiyao Ancient Town, you have to walk 24 kilometers of mountain roads. You can drive by yourself or hire a local to drive a motorcycle to lead the way.

Actually, this is a reinforced concrete earthen building from the later period. Hmm, the surrounding environment is quite interesting. You can see the Hegui Building across the street. Hmm, it's also very nice. Why not give it a try?
