House of Flowers

4.3/5

House of Flowers, also known as the "Flower House," is the final resting place of former Yugoslav leader Josip Broz Tito and his wife, Jovanka. This was originally a winter garden next to Tito's residence, where he enjoyed working, resting, and tending to plants during his lifetime. In accordance with his wishes, he was buried in the center of the flower house, and his wife, Jovanka, was laid to rest beside him after her passing. Today, the area where flowers once bloomed around the tomb is covered with white stones, but the name "House of Flowers" has remained in use. Stepping inside the House of Flowers, you will find a rectangular mausoleum made of white marble in the center. The tombstone is engraved with "Josip Broz Tito, 1892–1980" in three lines of gilded letters, simple yet solemn. The permanent exhibition surrounding it is worth a close look: starting in 1957, every year on May 25, Tito's birthday (which was also Yugoslavia's "Youth Day"), young people from all over would pass meticulously crafted batons to Belgrade to present to him. These uniquely shaped batons, along with the accompanying letters and photos, are now displayed here, serving as a unique window into that era of Yugoslavia.Serbia · Belgrade

Chinese Cultural Center

Chinese Cultural Center faces the old city across the Sava. Today, the Belgrade Chinese Cultural Center has been built on the original site. The building's facade incorporates imagery of Chinese landscape paintings, and statues of Confucius and Laozi stand in front of the entrance. The two monuments in front of the site are the core of this place: one was erected by the City of Belgrade and uses Chinese and Serbian to express gratitude for the support and friendship China provided during difficult times for the people of Serbia, and to commemorate the fallen martyrs. The other was erected by the Chinese side and is inscribed in Chinese, Serbian, and English with "Commemorate the martyrs, cherish peace" in memory of the three martyrs who sacrificed their lives. Fresh flowers are laid before the monuments all year round. There are no typical tourist attractions here, and the site is small and can be seen in a short time. It is a place to slow down, stand quietly, and pay your respects.Serbia · Belgrade

National Museum of Serbia

4.6/5
37 reviews
National Museum of Serbia is a long-standing, large-scale comprehensive museum in Serbia, with hundreds of thousands of items spanning from prehistoric times to the 20th century. Its collections of archaeology, numismatics, medieval art, and paintings are organized into distinct sections. This Neo-Renaissance building was originally a bank, and its striking dome makes it a landmark on the square. The museum's crown jewel, the Miroslav Gospel, is a 12th-century illuminated manuscript decorated with gold, which has been inscribed on the UNESCO Memory of the World Register. The medieval section brings together frescoes from Serbian monasteries and icons from the 13th–15th centuries. The archaeology exhibition area features busts of Roman emperors, mosaic fragments, and even an ancient Egyptian mummy known as the "Belgrade Mummy." The painting collection is equally outstanding, featuring European masters such as Titian, Tintoretto, and Rubens, as well as modern French works by Monet, Renoir, Degas, and Picasso, while the 20th-century Yugoslav art section traces the development of local art. We recommend setting aside time to explore it in detail. Afterward, it is just a few minutes' walk to Skadarlija, where traditional restaurants continue the atmosphere of the bohemian quarter.Serbia · Belgrade

The Šargan Eight

4.5/5
4 reviews
The Šargan Eight is a narrow-gauge sightseeing railway in western Serbia, running between the stations of Mokra Gora and Šargan Vitasi, with the entire line being approx. 15.5 km long. The line was once a section of the narrow-gauge main line connecting Belgrade and Sarajevo, extending as far as the Adriatic coast. After being closed for many years, it was restored and reopened as the sightseeing railway it is today. To overcome an elevation difference of approx. 300 m over just over 10 km, the tracks wind through the mountains in a giant "8" shape. In some sections, the train even passes the same spot twice, which is how it got its name. Riding this nostalgic train, nicknamed "Ćira," half the fun is outside the window: the railway runs between Tara and Zlatibor mountains, passing through 22 tunnels and over several bridges in succession, with some tunnel walls still dripping with mountain water. The carriages retain the style of the 1930s, and the wooden details are full of old-world charm. To see the full "8" shape, you can look down from the viewing point near the Krst station, where the upper and lower tracks look like two railways stacked on top of each other. On the return journey, the train stops at a spot with a wide view for passengers to take photos. There is a longer stop at the final station, where you can get off and explore the old station building. The area around Mokra Gora station has been developed into a museum-style tourist complex, with a restaurant next to the station serving home-style Serbian dishes, andDrvengrad, created by director Kusturica, is not far away and is often visited in combination with the train ride.Serbia · Mokra Gora

The National Library of Kosovo "Pjetër Bogdani"

4.4/5

The National Library of Kosovo "Pjetër Bogdani" is located in the center of Pristina and is named after the 17th-century Albanian writer Pjetër Bogdani. The library houses nearly 2 million items, including books, newspapers, periodicals, maps, and photographs, as well as Albanian manuscripts written in Latin, Greek, and Arabic, and ancient books and archives such as a 16th-century Latin biography of Skanderbeg. It serves as an important window into the history and cultural context of this land. What truly makes this library famous is its exterior, designed by Croatian architect Andrija Mutnjaković: 99 domes of varying sizes undulate across the roof, and the entire building is wrapped in a fishing net-like metal mesh, blending Byzantine and Ottoman architectural elements. Its appearance has long been the subject of "love it or hate it" debates, but it has also become a highly recognizable landmark in Pristina. The interior is a different story: the lobby floor is made of multi-colored marble mosaics, and the high-ceilinged space beneath the giant domes is filled with light. Various reading rooms, a periodical reading room, and tiered lecture halls are distributed across the floors, and the lobby is often used for cultural events such as exhibitions. When visiting, you can walk around the perimeter of the building to photograph the interplay between the domes and the metal mesh from different angles, then head into the lobby to experience the natural light beneath the domes.Pristina · 60.1km from Prizren

St. Mark Orthodox Church

St. Mark Orthodox Church is a Serbian Orthodox church dedicated to Saint Mark the Evangelist. Designed by the Krstić brothers, it features a Serbian-Byzantine style, with a facade built from two-colored natural stone. Modeled after the Gračanica Monastery, its layered domes stand out clearly against the greenery of the park. The interior can accommodate thousands of worshippers at once. Upon entering the church, the marble sarcophagus by the south wall is particularly worth a close look—the 14th-century Serbian Emperor Stefan Dušan is buried here, and the mosaic above the sarcophagus depicts his coronation. The main iconostasis is carved from marble and inlaid with mosaic icons. The tall apse above the altar features a Venetian glass mosaic of the "Theotokos, wider than the heavens," and the altar dome contains a massive mosaic of Christ Enthroned. A mosaic of Saint Mark is also embedded above the main entrance. The crypt houses the remains of royal family members, including King Alexander I of the Obrenović dynasty and Queen Draga, as well as several bishops. The sacristy on the south side houses numerous icons dating back to the 16th century.Serbia · Belgrade

The address is located in the northeast of Belgrade's main city. After Tito's death, he was buried in the greenhouse of the presidential residence. It is located at 15 Užice Street, Belgrade, next to the Museum of the History of the Former Yugoslavia.

In front of the site of the former Chinese Embassy in Yugoslavia, there are stone tablets commemorating the three Chinese journalists who died. We came here to pay homage to the heroes who are sleeping in a foreign country, and never forget the national humiliation! The new "Chinese Cultural Center" building was built on the site, reflecting the rise of the Chinese people.

The National Museum of Serbia, located in Belgrade’s Republic Square, is the country’s largest and oldest museum, offering a fascinating journey through history, art, and culture. Established in 1844, it houses over 400,000 exhibits, including prehistoric artifacts, medieval treasures, Renaissance masterpieces, and modern art. Highlights include works by famous European painters, ancient coins, and stunning Serbian medieval frescoes. The museum’s well-organized galleries and detailed explanations make it both educational and inspiring. Its neoclassical building adds to the charm, standing as a cultural landmark in the city. A visit here provides a deep understanding of Serbia’s rich heritage and artistic legacy.

It's a very old train, each carriage is different, the scenery along the way is pretty good, but there are many caves. If you can't buy a seat ticket during holidays, you can stand at the connection of the carriages to take pictures for a better view (the front of the train is too noisy). Ordinary people can't tell the difference between wide gauge and narrow gauge. The journey is too long and it will be a bit boring later.
