Tiantai Mountain Tourist Attraction is located in Qionglai, the first city west of Chengdu on the ancient Southern Silk Road. It is approx. 110 km from downtown Chengdu, with its main peak, Yuxiao Peak, standing at 1,812 m. It is part of the Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuaries, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, a national scenic area, a national forest park, and a national AAAAA-level tourist attraction. It is also one of the top eight global destinations for firefly viewing.TiantaishanOriginally known as Dongmeng mountain, it is said to have been the site where Emperor Yu offered sacrifices to heaven during his flood control efforts, earning the name "Yu Gong Meng mountain." Historically, the mountain was shared by Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, with over 100 temples, Taoist shrines, and official residences at its peak. The attraction features a box-shaped synclinal mountain, roughly forming a U-shape resembling a westward-facing "chair." The mountain rises from low to high, creating three terraces: Yitian terrace, Ertian terrace, and Zhengtian terrace, showcasing the distinctive scenery of "each terrace ascending to the heavens." Renowned for its "unique peaks, bizarre rocks, beautiful waters, serene forests, and enchanting clouds," the area boasts "ninety-mile rivers with eight hundred streams, nine thousand peculiar rocks and two thousand peaks," with approx. 95% forest coverage and abundant flora and fauna. "The higher the mountain, the higher the water," as the Jinlong river meanders down from the highest peak, Yuxiao peak, creating scenic water features like long beaches, cascading streams, waterfalls, and alpine lakes, along with phenomena like low-altitude sea of clouds and Buddha's halo. It is celebrated as "no need to see water after visiting Jiuzhaigou, no need to play with water after visiting Tiantai," making it a mountainous summer retreat famous for high-altitude water activities and nighttime firefly viewing, as well as a biodiversity-focused natural attraction for science education. Pingle Ancient Town is located in southwestern Qionglai. It is among the most original and well-preserved folk villages in western Sichuan. The Baimo River runs through the town from west to east. Along the banks of the river are thousand-year old banyan trees, stilt houses, and small docks. The quaint cobblestone roads and shopfronts, as well as the numerous bridges spanning the Baimo River, are part of Pingle Town's ineffable charm. Many of the town's Ming- and Qing-era houses have not only survived but are in good condition as well. Along both sides of the riverbanks, there are numerous cafés and snack shops to tempt a tired tourist to sit for a while and take a break. No visit is complete without trying the local pheasant and the stone-milled soft tofu.Qionglai · 15km from downtown

Xinchang Ancient Town, about 60 kilometers away from downtown Chengdu, retains many traditional residences in western Sichuan. Most of the houses in the ancient town were built during the Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China, and the antique old buildings are well preserved. The more representative ones are Li's old house, Fulin Society, Catholic Church, Gospel Church, Bishan Temple and so on. During the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty, merchants from other provinces gathered in Xinchang Ancient Town. Because of the convenient transportation, it became a prosperous market town for commerce and trade. A large number of provincial guild halls were built in the town. Although the guild halls are no longer there, a large number of antique buildings of the former merchants are still preserved. intact. There are seven ancient streets and six alleys in the ancient town. The ancient buildings on both sides of the streets and alleys are simple and beautiful, and the row upon row of fire-blocking walls are well preserved. If you are tired of walking in the ancient town, you can sit down by the river and taste the famous food in the ancient town such as "Xinchang Xuewang", "sesame oil duck" and "meat bean flower". Every year on the sixth day of the seventh lunar month, there is a grand Bishan Temple Fair in Xinchang Ancient Town. Many villagers will put on ancient costumes and dress up as characters in operas, stand on the table, and be carried by special personnel to parade along the street.Dayi · 14km from Qionglai

Mount Qingcheng

8.9
4.6/5
33.7k reviews
Mount Qingcheng has long been praised as "Tranquil Paradise under Heaven," with its peaks encircling like city walls—hence the name. Legend says Zhang Daoling of the Eastern Han dynasty established Taoism here in a thatched hut, making it the ancestral home of Celestial Master Taoism, where temple incense still burns today. The mountain divides into front and back sections: the front features Taoist temples and cultural relics, commonly referred to as "Mount Qingcheng" by most travelers; the back excels in natural landscapes like pools, waterfalls, streams, and gorges, making it ideal for hiking and summer retreats. The highlights of Qianshan are concentrated. Starting from Jianfu Palace beside the mountain gate, follow the ancient stone steps upward past Natural Picture, Tianshi Cave, Chaoyang Cave, and Shangqing Palace, with the summit's Laojun Pavilion as the final vantage point. Tianshi Cave, also called Changdao Temple, is one of the mountain's largest Taoist complexes—its front courtyard holds a millennium-old ginkgo tree allegedly planted by Zhang Daoling, while the cliffside Ink-throwing Trough behind is said to be where the celestial master drew mountains with vermilion ink. Painting master Zhang Daqian once resided at Shangqing Palace, styling himself "Guest of Qingcheng." At the mountain's base, Yuecheng Lake's mirror-like waters add ethereal beauty to the lush greenery. The rear mountain entrance is the quaint Tai'an ancient town. From here, the trails connect Wulong gully and Feiquan gully into a loop, with views like Misty spring triple pools, Double spring water curtain cave, and Hundred-zhang long bridge accompanied by the sounds of water and shaded woods. The Longyin gorge walkway built along cliffs overlooks rushing streams below, making it a dedicated hiking route. The mountain stays pleasantly cool even in midsummer. The front mountain and back mountain entrances are not connected, usually requiring separate itineraries. Most 1-day tours choose one of the two. The front mountain's main temples can be visited in half a day, while the back mountain loop is longer and requires reserving most of a day. Travelers wishing to see the sunrise often ascend the mountain a day early, staying overnight at mountain temples for convenient morning viewing.Dujiangyan · 55.7km from Qionglai

The scenic train is fun! I didn't go full speed; I was braking and accelerating at the same time, and it was definitely much faster than walking—very exciting! People in a hurry or those who enjoy rides should definitely take a ride. It would be even better if the price were reduced to 30 yuan. The scenic area has been renovated, and climbing the mountain is a nice experience.

The scenery is beautiful, and the water volume is still high in October. Several waterfalls are very attractive, and the hike is not tiring. The steep slope turns into a flat area after a few minutes, making it very friendly to the elderly. It's worth visiting often.

The Ming and Qing dynasty architecture of the ancient town was a revelation for this seasoned traveler! The Leshan Bridge, with its bluestone slabs and carved wooden buildings, exudes a strong sense of history! Changqing Street's stone-paved streets and lush greenery are a perfect match, even more charming at night when the lanterns are lit. The Ancient Tea Horse Road and porcelain-inlaid bamboo weaving are located in the core area, making them incredibly convenient to explore. The surrounding natural scenery is a delightful surprise: the Lugou Bamboo Sea, with its 100,000 acres of bamboo forest, is like a natural oxygen bar, with such high levels of negative ions that breathing feels effortless! The Jinji Valley hiking trail is not strenuous, and along the way are many exquisite guesthouses. I highly recommend "Shouzhuo" Mountain Residence; waking up to birdsong in the morning is incredibly therapeutic. Foodies must try the milk soup noodles and pot-boiled chicken combo! The milk soup is simmered to a rich, milky white consistency using chicken and pork bones, perfectly complemented by red broth mutton and cornbread! I love ordering covered-bowl tea at a riverside teahouse and gazing at the Baimo River in a daze—this slow pace is rare on the Western Sichuan routes, perfect for relaxing in the latter half of the trip. For those departing from Chengdu, I recommend combining it with a two-day trip to Tiantai Mountain. The ancient town isn't large, but it's full of details; it's best to avoid weekends. ⚠️ Remember to wear non-slip shoes, as some stone paths are covered in moss. I'm currently compiling a collection of lesser-known routes in Western Sichuan; what other off-the-beaten-path attractions would you like to know about?

From the perspective of a grand family residence, the architecture and treasures here are well-preserved and worth seeing; from a historical research perspective, the artistry and the complexity of the creative background of the rent collection courtyard complex are also worthy of consideration. In short, it has unique elements and is recommended for a visit.

Jiaguan was once the frontier of ancient Shu, and was a post station on the famous Ancient Tea-Horse Road and the Southern Silk Road. It is no longer prosperous now, but it retains many relics and tranquility... Jiaguan has not been overbuilt, and retains a relatively simple flavor. There is a temple on the slope at the entrance of the ancient town, which is holding a ritual. There are many small shops selling tea on the street, and you can walk on the ancient stone bridge.

It's worth the money to see the so-called "big landlord's house" 👲 Learning about the Liu family's ancestral business and rise to wealth was no easy feat in those days; accumulating wealth requires hard work. Looking at the stories of one era from the perspective of another makes it impossible to judge. Today's capitalists and some entrepreneurs also have their own struggles and starting stories. Each has its own characteristics and is a product of its historical stage. The manor's design is exquisite and offers valuable architectural historical reference. The three houses require about 3 hours to see, if you're interested. Including the various attractions in the ancient town, walking is the best option.

I visited Jiuzhaigou, and after landing in Chengdu, I took a taxi to Qingcheng Mountain. I took the cable car up the mountain around 2 pm and hiked down, which took more than three hours. I quickly visited the main attractions on Qingcheng Mountain, especially the one where Sun Wukong became an apprentice in Journey to the West. Overall, it was quite good.
